Looking for a .500Cal
      #69703 - 18/01/07 07:18 AM

Hello everyone. I'm new to this website and have a question for you. I'm looking for a .500cal or similar bolt action rifle. Nothing smaller and nothing too much bigger{no .577's or anything like that}. I'm looking for a cheap rifle, nothing over 4 or 5G. I'm not looking for anything fancy, no engraving or anything. Just a plain jane rifle. Does anyone make a rifle like this or are they all custom 10G+ rifles? Any help will be appriciated.

Hello, and welcome to NitroExpres.com.

I recommend you try a CZ Sarari Classic, which comes in .505 Gibbs. It's in your price range and ought to knock you around sufficiently.

Ok, that's exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks. Does anyone know of any other brands besides the CZ?

I've got a custom 500 Jeffrey built on a Mauser action that I was thinking of moving on as it is surplus to my requirements.

PM me if you want more info.

CptCurl, I checked out CZ's website and looked in the 2006 shooters bible and cannot find anywhere that says they offer the safari 550 in a .505gibbs cal. Are you sure they still make it? And again, does anyone know of any other companies that make a rifle like I am looking for?

angusruls,

I just got a current flier from Jerry's Sport Center and saw it listed there. I also noticed one listed in the current issue of Gun List. I assume they are still available.

I haven't seen one and don't have one to sell. I'm not endorsing the rifle. Don't know its quality. Just threw in my $0.02 worth for this thread.

Curl

P.S. Having just said what I said, I just went to Jerry's website and found that the Safari Classic in .505 is not in stock. Bummer, eh?

Look in the classified add at the rifle I have for sale and let me know if you have any interest even though it's a little bit above your price.

Probably the easiest and cheapest way is to rebarrel a CZ in 416 Rigby to the 500 A Square.

If you are not familiar with the 500 A Square it is basically a 460 Wby necked up to 50 calibre. Since the 460 Wby is like a 416 Rigby that has been blown out or Improved, necked up to 50 and belt added, it makes for simple conversion of existing 416 Rigby rifles.

Well forgive my stupidity, but what is re-barreling? Is it just purchasing a barrel for a .500 and switching it with the barrel that is for the .416?

Mike

Not that simple. Being a DG Rifle I would also want to make sure the feed ramp and Mag work correctly with the 500 jeff, especially since you have a range of bullets available in a range of Bullet Weights.

I'd at least get it done by someone who knows what theeff they are doing.

And then it still has to be sighted in on a bench and the sights set up correctly.

Don's fire arms in Victoria Texas (361-572-9866)has one on the rack and since it have been there a while he has discounted it. I have no interest in it at all . I have shot a 500 A Square. If you are new to big bores you might want start a little milder than the 500's or reload down to start. They are not for the faint hearted. Just my .02.

I CAN PERSONALLY TELL YOU THAT THE CZ IN 505 GIBBS, CUSTOM SHOP GUN IS AS GOOD A BIG BORE FOR THE MONEY THAT'S OUT THERE. IT HAS ABOUT THE SAME RECOIL AS A 500 A SQUARE, OF WHICH I HAVE ONE BUILT BY BOB HISSERICH OF MESA ARIZONA THAT I JUST LOVE. TAKEN BUFFALO WITH BOTH AND THINK THE CZ WOULD FIT THE BILL FOR YOU NICELY FOR ABOUT 4K LESS THAN A CUSTOM.

angusruls

Rebarreling involves taking the rifle to a gunsmith and he chambers the new barrel for the new cartridge and then fits it to the action.

Once that is done you have a rifle that will at least "go bang" But other issues such as sights being fitted need to be done. Also, there might be some feeding problems with the change of cartidge.

Most people would agree that the 500 A Square is the easiest way to a 500 rifle and also the easiest for obtaining brass and reloading in general.

However, it has less pizzaz or "character" than a 500 Jeffery or 505 Gibbs and would be generally considered as less desirable to have in a more expensive custom rifle.

Empire Rifles www.empirerifles.com makes some bolt-guns in .500 Jeffery for around $5000. Nice actions on them.
For the CZ's in .505Gibbs, you have to look at their Safari Classics website, not the regular CZ website. Plenty available for around $2300.

Here are a couple of ideas for a .500 on the cheap.

I know you want a bolt gun, but a Ruger #1 can be made into a .505, or other .50 for a song, compared to a custom bolt gun.

Now that the rimmed 50s are cheaper to load, i.e., Lyman dies and Starline brass, a very capable .50 could be assembled for under $1500 on a Siamese 98 action or a Ruger #1. A 50-90 with smokeless loads in a 98 or Ruger #1 will provide a lot of push on both ends!

Otto

P.S. to Curl: What is the lovely underlever pictured in your posts? I have an "Adams" 450 BPE that is very similar, but without the carved fences.

Otto,

The underlever double rifle you see is a Woodward "Automatic." It's an exceptional double, chambered in .450/.400 3.25" Nitro Express. You can see it in detail at this link:

Butch Searcy's PH model is the lowest price double he has and it is $10,500. You can check it out here. http://www.searcyent.com/new_ph_model.htm Doesn't hurt to look!!

Yeah, they're right over there in between the cheap Renoir's and the cheap Rolls-Royces.

But seriously, cheap dangerous game rifles scare me as much as cheap sushi. Think about it.

Another option in a bolt is the 495 A-Square, if memory serves it's the Lott case necked to take a 50 bullet. Should be milder than the 500 or 505.

hi there. i can certainly recomend the the heym express in .505 gibbs or .500 jeffrey. in a different league from the bruno- it feeds for a start!
it is however not a cheap rifle- and i suggest unless you just want to shoot single shots on a range you really dont want a cheap rifle if this is going to africa...
the heymis simply put a no frills-well made and reliable workhorse; approx cost around £3750- give the guys at heym a call- you will not be disapointed. i have just recieved my .505 gibbs and it is magnificent, feeds like a deam and the mauser squarebridge action is vault like in its construction and efficency.- without out doubt the most secure bedding system i have ever seen in a factory walnut stock too. aliminum bedding, 2 recoil bolts and synthetic over lay so it fits perfectly.

best olly

What about the 50-90 Sharps loaded with new smokeless powder like Reloder 15... should be able to get over 2,000 fps and 4800 pounds of energy.
