Big Bore rifle on a budget?
      #56448 - 05/05/06 12:14 PM

I've fallen in love with the various 577 Nitro rounds. Question is can a rifle for this calibre be built on a budget. I'm thinking a Ruger number 1 but wondered if the P14 303 action or after reading about the "Hell 12gauge" of Heubeuls if a bolt action shot gun action could be modified to accomodate the rimmed round. Heck I'm not likely to shoot dangerous game...just love super large chunks of lead being launched downrange. Any ideas?

You could not build a .577 NE on a P14 Enfield, but you could build a .585 Nyati. However, it certainly will not be a budget project because the labor will cost more than just buying a magnum Mauser action new for $3K.

A Ruger No. 1 can be rebarreled to .577 NE and you would only have $12oo to $1500 in it. That will leave plenty of funds still available for chiropractor visits to get your neck re-aligned after shooting the rifle.

A relatively affordable big bore option is a .600 Overkill on a CZ550 built by American Hunting Rifles www.hunting-rifles.com for $3500.

With all due respect, not knowing what big bore experience you have I recommend you get a Ruger No1 in 458 Lott. It will probably have all the recoil you "need". AND you can load it down to moderate levels for actual hunting/shooting.

Plus the bullets in .458 are very affordable, so you can shoot it a lot.

How about a big bore double on a budget? Send me an email.

For a big bore double on a budget, take a look at the Merkel, the Chapuis and the Krieghoff.

For the best value on a double suitable for the big five take a look at the Chapuis 9,3x74R.

Thanks guys for all the posts. I'm thinking that a Ruger NO1 in 458 Lott might be the way to go. If I get sick of that rebarrel to a 577 then! Now to keep an eye out for a rifle on the market at the right price. Will keep you posted!

Hi Guys,
Progress report. Well I picked up a bargain priced Ruger No1 donor rifle minus barrel & sights. I still love the idea of a 577 nitro but think that the 470 might be a better way to keep the costs down. I figure if I get a 470 barrel to the standard tropical contour I could use the a ruger quarter rib & front sight. Now this is where the questions start.

- If I go for the standard factory length & contour barrel is the rifle going to be too light for comfortable shooting in this calibre?
- Is a scope a bad idea on a 470? My eyesight is a little worse for wear so find accurate shooting with open sights difficult....maybe a peep sight would be the way to go if a scope is a no no!

I Look forward to any advice you have.

Luke
I have a No1 in 45/70 and I have shot a 458 No1 a fair amount.
I think a 470 No1 might be a little stout on the recoil end for comfortable shooting.

Actually since the No1 handles rimless rounds so well it is hard to beat a 458 Win Mag or a 458 Lott, as there are so many cheap bullets to be found.

For pure hunting purposes with a bit of nostalga a 450/400 3" would be hard to beat.

But then again,in a No1 a 416 Rem Mag is a lot cheaper to shoot and you can duplicate and surpass a 450/400 if you think it necessary.
