4-bore rifle
      #46718 - 16/01/06 08:25 AM

Re-post now that I have gotten myself into your site to post properly.. the problem was on my end...

I have been reading this site and others looking for information to assist me in my quest to build the big 4-bore. I know that there are those of you out there that would say why not go for the mighty .600 nitro! well it is in part nostalga and in part the thought of letting 4 ounces of lead fly with each pull of the trigger.

If anyone outhere has built one of these fine weapons, and would be willing to part with there notes and specs HELP!!! Or does anyone know someone who has built one? there was one gentleman on another site (4-bore part I and II) no way to contact. Or if anyone simply has an idea of where I might find the spec's for any of the original guns it would be greatly appreciated.

Butch Searcy built one which I think was used in the filming of Jurassic Park. Butch's website is here: www.searcyent.com

try this for a start

www.african-hunter.com

go into the achived articles and look for "4 bore part I."

by John Millar. He built one. Recoil does indeed build
charactor. Everyone should get the chance to touch off
16 drams of powder and a 4 oz. ball!
Good Luck!

Hartmann & Weiss might be able to help you with an action. Will be pricy however quality costs.

Try Clayton Nelson of Trinidad,Co. I know he has built several BIG bores on his own Farquarson actions. He might point you in the right direction.

Muzzleloader or cartridge? Muzzleloader emporium at 541-741-4118 can supply some of the parts.

I think he even has one for sale, including a 2 bore as well. Now that builds character!

There are a few others of us over on AR
planning on building 4 bores.Actions are hard to get.
I have setup a way to make 4bore case from 20mm brass. We have Badger barrel setting up to make 4bore barrels,
350 bucks each. This is a 4bore of .998 diameter bulletso as to use the 2000gr bullets Naval ordnance makes.I plan on later for a test rifle using a converted state arms
bmg bolt action. We also want to find an economical
break or falling block to build them on.Ed.

The Borchardt action is newly made and readily available. And it only goes for $2K or so. Will it fit a 4 bore?

I think Borchardt is big enough with our rim size on
our brass.Borchardt only has a phone-505-535-2923.
Now they may notd think it can be done as it took Rob
long time to talk them into doing the 12GA FH.So
it is better to get action and do it yourself. It is
huge strong action.I'd use one if I had the bucks.Ed.

Ed you are planning to build a single barrel 4-bore? Gutsy move even I ,with my love of recoil, would not want to hunt dangerous game having to work any action before a follow up shot.
But seriously thanks for the barrel tip!! the bullet your going to use is a little heavy but what the #### better to over kill then be killed. I kinda had planned to machine my own brass, its an excuss to get out of the house But I would be interested in your adaptation of 20mm brass. sound like a real time saver.

I am planning on a single barrel, and will use a
State arms shellholder action for testing and load developement. Will rebate rim to use it, as the case has extractor groove, with the rim, being made from 20mm
brass.Making cases if you gave CNC equipment is faster than
the way I have to convert these, and will handle loads
generating 20,000 plus ft lbs.If you make cases
we hope all will follow our specs as they fit Naval
Ordnance bullets, and they were made to fit the 4bore cases that Ken Owen, in Tennessee
used in doubles he made, and the bore fits the barrels
Badger is going to make.We are trying to standardize.

I checked their demensinons and it should work.Action
is huge, as it weighs 12.5 lbs by itself. And
should handle moderate pressures, that will generate those
20,000 ft lb loads, in the diameter of the barrel you can put in it. 4 bore barrels will be over 2.5 in to start. Here is picture of our cases and Naval Ord bullets.
In pic is 20mm case we make them from and06 for
comparison.Ed.
