FINALLY, #14 BREVEX - ORIG POST WAR JOHN RIGBY 416 RIGBY CAL
      #381322 - 17/12/23 11:21 AM

WELL, I FINALLY FOUND No. 14 BREVEX - WHAT A FIND - AN ORIGINAL POST WAR JOHN RIGBY BREVEX IN 416 RIGBY CALIBER - CASED WITH ALL THE ACCESSORIES.

I haven't posted in a while because I have not found any new treasures worth mentioning ... until now ....

I had been searching endlessly to add another Brevex to my collection since its been over a year that #13 was added in September of 2022, I was worried that I was stuck on unlucky 13 forever. But not so .. and what a treasure this one turned out to be. Near as I can tell its never been hunted and appears unfired. It was purchased by Gastinne Renette for one of their customers back in 1971. Gastinne Renette of Paris is a maker and specialist in the weapons of hunting and luxury. Their quality is on par with Holland & Holland, Purdey and Boss & Co.

Why this gun remained in such unused condition for over 52 years in unknown - perhaps a collected safe queen. Searching internet history shows it was sold by Holt's Auction House in England in 2015. Apparently it remained stuck in "red-tape" export laws for the last 8 years - until finally imported to the the U.S. this year.

Its a real treasure for me to have a an Original John Rigby in 416 Rigby cal., and even more treasured because its a rare Brevex action. Emails with Diggory Hadoke, the Rigby Archivist, was told by Paul Roberts, who was in charge of Rigby at the time this rifle was made, that only four .416 rifles were made on French Brevex actions. (sourced from Giles Whittome) He went on to say that between 220 to 230 Big Game 416s were made on CZ actions and between 40 to 50 were made on Magnum Mauser actions, many recycled from .350 cal.

This is now the top treasure in my 14 piece Brevex rifle collection. But I did discover a negative - although the scoped rifle weighs only 11-1/2 pounds, the rifle in the case weighs over 41 pounds. I guess the 30 pound airline travel case is made to protect the rifle in case of a plane crash.

... as always your comment are most welcome ...

The 14 Brevex rifles collected to date ...

I don't think you will better #14 which for me is the perfect DG rifle. IMO best gunmaker, best cartridge, and best looker than any other in your Brevex collection. I'm sure your are but I would ecstatic with that find, well done.

Hello pjaln,
Thanks for the reply.

Yes, those are my 2 favorites. The Labauschagne 505 was my first Brevex (and my first Big Game rifle) from 10 years ago. That 505 is the one that started my interest in Brevex Mausers and Big Game rifles. I have since acquired 14 Brevex Mausers, and over 60 Big Game rifles. (including those Brevex Mausers and my Double rifles)

here is the post about the 505 Labauschagne, my first Brevex, that I purchased in 2013 - .. http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat....true#Post238231

No wonder you are on top of the world mate - certainly a very, very rare bird indeed!
Very well done indeed mate!
As far as wrapping it up under the Christmas tree, 41lbs of case & rifle, a simple bow on top with a card will more than suffice, paper won't survive that stress!

Thank you all for the your wonderful reply .... Its been a few days since it arrived and I'm still "giddy" over acquiring it. I wish i wasn't so old so I could go to Africa and test it on big game. I'll have to be satisfied with dispatching a Wisconsin Whitetail and punching holes in targets.

What does too old mean?

It's all a question of physical condition, and unfortunately also of money. However, I would consider a buffalo hunt in Africa rather than a bison hunt in North America as @lancaster suggested. The latter is not cheap either, and today's bisons, as well as our European wisents, are no longer comparable to their ancestors. I shot a wisent, so that I can compare with African buffalos; no comparison despite the similar weight of the game.

Anyone who has a battery like yours has to use it at some point.

Yeah not sure what that means either, if you are still mobile and don't have to tow around an Oxygen tank then you are never to old to hunt.

Matt.

*UPDATE* #14 BREVEX - ORIG POST WAR JOHN RIGBY 416 RIGBY CAL [Re: 93x64mm]

Thanks to a seller on Gun Broker I was able to purchase a Vintage unopened box of John Rigby 416 Rigby ammo from the same period of the rifle. It fits perfect in the case and adds to the originality of the display.

Congratulations on a beautiful rifle (and what a find on the vintage ammo) !!!!! The Americase’s are heavy but they are the best cases for air travel (sadly Americase no longer makes rifle cases ).
Well done !!!!!!!!!

The ammo is post-war just like the rifle. Approx 1950 - 1980.

Not sure if I will shoot this one or just collect it. I have 7 other 416's so I really don't need to fire it.
