London Guns 500 Jeffery
      #357541 - 23/10/21 03:14 PM

Arrived and very impressed also a little intimidated...........
Assembled and cleaned , only factories available as cases , dies etc sent to new. Address in Vic..
Sako ammo 535gr for the test run, four down range with the third a bad flinch. Shoots well with the factories.
Showed it of at the collectors meet and surprised to see another members London guns 500J on a 602 action. Same quality works and engraving very nice, 602 about 13 builds before mine.
Heres some pics.

Couldn't wait for a hunt. Fair amount of rain so finding game was going to be harder than normal. Lots of Km's with a very heavy rifle. Paid of with some fast shooting on a mob of pigs dropped two. Nice to shoot game and didn't even notice the recoil.
Heres a couple of pics, not a real test for the cal or rifle but a lot of fun.
Cheers Mick

Damn! I had a look at one of these at Century Arms when buying my .375. From memory $4000 newly made. Not as nice as yours.

That is a real beauty………...With all the horsepower you are ever likely to need!
Curious; barrel length and what does it weigh?

Very nice compact carry FN Mauser, built on a standard action too. You'll have to look after that one Mick.
Didn't know Century Arms/London Guns was still in business. Bought my supply of RWS FMJ .404 bullets from John Saunders back in 1978, just in time to load up for a weeks buffalo hunt up in your NT with Terry Halse as our 'guide'. Back then reloading stuff for the British big bores was hard to come by. John stocked a bit, the 100 .404 projectiles set me back NZ$1.00 each which was bloody expensive in comparison to other common reloading stuff at the time.

Certainly a great score to get one as good as that Mick - very nice piece of kit there!
Yes you might have been a 'wee' bit over gunned for pigs, but was a good outing none the less & you got a bit of practice in using your 'not-so-fat' lady!

Mike- pretty sure its a 24” barrel and weighs around 10.5lb. Carried all day Friday , knew I was carrying it by the end of the day. Disappointed i didnt find anything bigger to try it on. Next year!
Cheers Mick

Holtzy is still around. I did some work for him, seems like a lifetime ago.
I came to the NT as a green kid in 82, hunted for a couple of weeks for my first buff and pig. With 45/70 which i thought was the biggest cal in the world.
NT got under my skin and i kept coming back until i eventually moved here.
Ironically i got nosler partitions bought in at a dollar a projectile and everyone thought i was mad. I still rate the partition as a good projectile. Wasnt much available in controlled expansion in those days.
The 500J is a very nice build , and will have to wait for a buff next year. Ill come back up for a hunt with another forum member. Covid restrictions pending.
Cheers mick

As far as I know, Century Arms finished years ago. First the premises closed down, they had a website for a while after. Do they still? I have had my 375 since? Sometime after my first Safari in 1994 and my second in 2001 or 2002. Probably mid 1990s. I often buy a new Safari rifle after a safari. My .30-06 used in 94, my 375 used in 2001. My 450 and 9.3 used in 2006. Long drought since 2006.

Century Arms, owner John Saunders was selling the London Guns, gunmaker Rolf Babnich was making these M98 .500 Jeffery's at the time. Intrigued by the large hole in the muzzle.

Excellent purchase, Mick. Lovely wood, nice case as well.

Well done Mick, ripper purchase. I saw your rifle being shot many times at our BGRC shoots and it always drew attention. It is certainly beautifully made and handles like a dream. Good to see that it likes factory ammo, I only ever saw it being used with handloads. Great to see that you are using out in the bush hunting as well. Nice pigs, certainly looking forward to seeing some pics with a few buffs next year.

Matt.

That BRNO 602 and the CZ 550 are both essentially CZs lol. Very nice gun. I have a CZ 550 in 500 Jeffery that I really like. 570g TSX's at 2300 fps. Recoil is but a maiden's kiss.
