NX,
Edelweiss is from Nottingham, New England and I was raised in the Panhandle of Texas (something like your Northern Territory with plenty oil and gas). They are worlds apart, especially WRT guns and hunting.

When I retired, most of my suits did also and are now only worn to Church and funerals.

Ash,
A reason or two for using the 450 grain bullets in the 45-90 :
1. Great past success with 400 and 450 grain Punch, North Fork and Kodiak bullets in 45-70 and 45-90.

2. The 45-90 has 96% the case capacity of the .450 Win Mag, a caliber thought by many to have too little capacity for 500 grain bullets.

3. Experience taking Nilgai, water buffalo, Cape Buffalo, and large exotics with 45-70 with bullet velocity less than 2000 fps.

4. Last, but VERY meaningful; 50 yard shot with 45-70 430 grain Punch (brass bullet with lead filled base) at less than 2000 fps shot/punched through 5/8 steel swinging target plate! A clean, daylight hole! Same bullet just whistles through cape buff broadside shots too!

Please forgive my repetition, but the bullet does the killing!

For those that do respect the modern .45-70, imagine how few animals would be left in Africa if the modern .45-70 rifles and ammo were available to the African citizen population?

UPDATE!
Not totally satisfied with the regulation of the 300 grain hand loaded ammo that came with my used (new to me and actually, like new) Beretta 45-70, so I took a variety of commercial 45-70 ammo to the range last Saturday. The Hornady 325 grain bullets at 2000 fps had zing, but did not group well.

Next was the Remington Green Box 405 grain JSP. A right and left twice around and we had a nice 4 shot, 2 inch group at 50 yards + it was level with the Bullseye and 4 inches to the right.

All at once the rifle was regulated! With a lateral sight adjustment, ready to hunt. :):)

I have 100 cases of primed brass and 100 Remington 405 grain JSP bullets and plenty of VV N133 powder
ready to be turned into ammo. Plus plenty of serious NF, Barnes, and Punch .458 bullets for DG if needed.

Now the gun shoots as good as it looks:

So - greenbox 405gr. @ 1,320fps regulates.
What will it do with heavier loads?
Nice plank on that rifle.

Daryl,
Thanks for liking the eye catching stock.

The bullet box says 1330 fps and I will chrony a couple of shots to see the velocity from this gun's 26 inch barrels.

Next step will be .405 grain bullet hand loads with VV N133 (avoids chamber pressure spikes, posing less risk when raising pressures above personal experience with the gun) to see the effects of increasing velocity using Chrony to document progress. VV load manual has N133 45-70 loads for 405 grain bullet up to 1900 fps that do not exceed 30,450 psi. We shall see.

With more experience and knowledge, I have 400 and 450 grain NF and Kodiak bullets to load and shoot. At 2000 fps they have proven to be big medicine for elephant, Cape buff, etc.
Again, we shall see just how close I can get to 450 NE velocity without extending the chambers .3 inches to .45-90 length which I already know can run 450 grain bullets at 2150 fps.

All long range musings that might have a future.
