Will a 416 rigby fit in a standard length mauser or a pre 64 Winchester standard length ?

No it takes a LOT of work, but it can be done.
In fact Harry Selby's famous 416 was made on a standard length GEW Mauser 98

I once saw a pre-64 Model 70 which had been converted to .416 Rigby by Griffin & Howe. I asked Paul Chapman, head of gunsmithing at G&H, about that conversion and he said that they didn't recommend it now.

Actually, with the number of true magnum length Mauser type actions and rifles floating around, in particular the CZ 550's and BRNO 602's, at quite reasonable prices, there is no reason for such conversions.

xausa is correct.
It actually less expensive even if you have to buy a whole CZ rifle and do the conversion than it is to start with a GEW Mauser. And the CZ Action is outstanding well made. They need a bit of polish at times, but they are super solid and the magazine can be had from CZ that need little or no work to make it feed a 416.

Makes me wonder why we never see many customs built on Ruger magnum actions.
I have seen one being used by a PH but only one.
Is there a reason they are not popular?

I think there is some kind of stigma attached to Ruger that is undeserved. About 12 years ago I saw online in an Australian gunshop a David Mackay Brown rifle in 7x57 on a Ruger 77 action. It was a beautiful, elegant rifle and I gazed at it for weeks, emailed about it, but ultimately didn't buy it, even after the price was reduced several months later. David Mackay Brown and Ruger in a classic cartridge just didn't go together well in my mind the way I was thinking then. Now of course I wish I had bought it. I think the price was about 4K USD. It may be the only DMB rifle ever built on a Ruger action and one of the few bolt rifles ever built by that firm. Some of you may have seen it. I've forgotten the name of the gunshop....maybe McAuliffe?

I have a Holland & Holland in .375 built on a standard length German Military action. It's tops and I don't see why there not used more often.

A lot of it comes from the Clinton "assault weapon" ban years. Bill Ruger made a comment that nobody needs more than 15 round capacity. AR guys decided to hate him over it. Then, people simply started saying Ruger sucks and never said why, people started believing it and started complaining about the slightest issue that would normally be quickly fixed, and the reputation was ruined.

I always wanted a M77 in .416 Rigby.

For my preferences, (and I had a 77 Ruger in 7x57 for a while) the bolt handle is simply wrong in shape and the sloped recoil lung is not the best idea going either, regardless of the percieved advantages.

Customs? Why! They look great as they are! Maybe that's why?

I'd love a Ruger RSM some day.

Could well be but I have had nothing but problems with 2 out of 3 Ruggers I have owned. A No.1 in 375H&H, not a problem at all, should never have sold it. Ruger No1 in 303 Brit, no matter what I did could not stop it vertical string a group over 5 inches at 100mt. Replaced under warranty, replacement is gold. 77 Mk2 action was warped, discovered this way to late for warranty, replaced with a hawkeye action, is good.

I was trying to find a Rugger 77 in 416 Rigby but at $550 more than a CZ550 I could not justify it.
The Ruger was $2150 and the CZ550 was $1600 at the time.

I bought my 416 RSM for $1200 and I see them frequently offered in the $1500+/- range.

Granted, they are not magnum Mausers by any means but I have often wondered what could be achieved with a simple reshape of the stock (which is terrible) and slicking up the action.
If restocking, maybe an Oberndorf style bolt and redoing the bridges to look more Mauser like too.
Might end up with a pretty decent looking and handling DG rifle.

I have a RSM in 416 rigby, my only issue is with the shape of the bolt. Sometimes your trigger finger cops a wallop.

G'Day Fella's,

Ducmarc, these days, I'd go with a New CZ 550 in .416 Rigby!

202T, great looking rifle and Ross has done a stunning job, as usual!!!
I also have an RSM in .375 H&H. The factory Turkish Circassian walnut stock was that nice, I bought the rifle!

Doh!

Both Ross and Roger were great to deal with. I have since replaced the mounts with a hiker bridge mount which I had to extend due the the larger non standard 416 rigby action. This was done so that I could move the scope another 1/2 inch forward. I can now make full use of the extended eye relief on the EE Z6 scope.

202T that is a beautiful rifle. Love the Waghorn stock.

Can you get the bolt redone straight? Can't see the point of a swept back bolt on a med-large bore rifle, and they hurt when they connect!

Cheers, Chris
