How does the 'FZH Mauser 98' type action compare to a standard Mauser 98 action dimensionally? Could a Weatherby Southgate Mauser action be used to build a .465 H&H Belted Mag rifle?

The FZH Mauser 98 is available in standard or magnum length.(That is what H&H uses). They are based on riginal Mauser dimensions. The Weatherby Mark V action would work but would not be the preferred action for an H&H cartridge. A Weatherby FN in .300Mag could be mod. to accept this cartridge but my original point was that any Mauser 98 large ring would do.

Yeah - right - maiden's kiss. Thick hard lips on that maiden.

Really nice board on that beast, Chuck.

Thank you both, it shoots well too. Now I just need to get the kids through college and make it to Africa. I think a Weatherby Southgate FN Mauser would make a perfect basis for a 465 H&H to answer the original post.

I haven't found loaded ammo. I have Jamison 460 Weatherby Basis Brass that I reformed to 465 H&H. Woodleigh makes the bullets. I have several boxes of their 465 Nitro 480gr RN SN and have their 480gr Full Metal Jacket and 480gr Hydrostatically Stabilized Solids on backorder. I also have Quality Cartridge 465 H&H Magnum brass on backorder which is overdue.

I've accumulated the parts I need to have the rifle built. I just haven't decided where to send them.

So is that about the biggest cannon shell that will fit in a standard action and how does it stack up power wise with the 425 WR?

I built a 400H&H on a new Win MOd 70 and have shot numerous game with it and cannot say enough about this round. The 400 will probably go back to Africa in 2017 as a backup to my double for Buff and my rifle for Eland. Thinking this time around I will choose North Fork's .411 dia 360gr SP which should leave the barrel just south of 2500fps.
So I have in the safe a 300H&H,375H&H,400H&H and a 458 Lott, all derived from the same case. I would be willing to take that pic if you are still interested, but my photo skills are some what limited.

Jamison 460 Weatherby Basic Brass is approx. 3" long w/parrell sides and inside case diameter is .55.
I think this case was used to develop the .550 Express(2.650") and the .550 Magnum(3.000").

Is there a cartage with a slight neck to 500. Then standard bullets and barrels.

I shot a .460 necked up to shoot .510" bullets. The rifle was built on a ZKK 602 action. I suspect this should have been called a .505 Barnes Supreme.

The box as I remember it, was marked .510/460 WTBY - 125gr. of IMR3031 600gr. Barnes 2,450fps - supposedly. I do not know if that load is a safe one, but that is what was as I remember the markings on the box.

I later checked and found the .460 WTBY used up to 126gr. of H4831 with the 500gr. Hornady.

Is there any news regarding this cartridge ?

I have hardly read anything about weapons built for this cartridge, let alone seen one.

If the 460 Weatherby was the starting cartridge then they have swaged a belt onto it. The parent case for the 460 Weatherby I believe was the 416 Rigby so one should be able to do the same or just make it a beltless 465. Sourcing brass would be easier.

I suspect this cartridge is probably dead and buried.
