Mr Brenneke's 9.3x64mm, (all his x64mm family) was specifically designed to do just that, scraps in at 3.37".
True may not be a stopper, but more than capable as told by John Taylor about his German friend who had one - using solids to kill elephant with it!

Are we talking hunting rounds, or stopping rounds - can be a huge difference. Seems most people think stoppers.
My favourite round isn't even on there - .376/06IMP.

My Mk10 Mauser chambered this ctg. carries 5 + one in the chamber and easily does over 2,450fps with 300's. It also does over 2,600fps with 270's - both exceed the published velocities of the original .375H&H made in 1912 and those ballistics which the .375 produced to develop it's reputation as a great ALL - ROUND HUNTING ctg. for the big 5.

Could somebody tell me which kind of cartridges are .416 and .450 Rigby short ?

My own selection would be 9,3x64, 10,75x68, .404 Jeffery and then, the last but not least would be 11,2 x 72 Schüler.

Because I'm a weirdo, I'd go for the .425 Westley Richards.

It was designed to feed through the 98 Mauser action and meets the accepted DGR standard of 400 grains at 2400 feet per second.

Downside: it's a real oddball nowadays, though Pac-Nor will make the required .435" barrel and brass and bullets are available.

.425 WR is interesting caliber but I have read that making m98 Mauser to feed it flawless you need to do some not-so-easy conversions to action/magazine. Rebated rim is the main reason.

Igorrock,
The rim of the .425WR has the same dimention as your prefered 11,2X72 Schueler.

Yes, you are correct, RobertL. It seems that my judgement of reason is wrong but despite of that it too seems that it would be easier to build well working 11,2x72 caliber rifle than .425 WR. So the reason should be some another detail of shells profile.

404 or 500 Jeffery depending on your stopping needs and recoil tolerance.

Igorrock The cartridges mentioned are Wildcats that already exist or could be made from existing cases and bullets. For example a .450 Rigby with its 3.7" length requires an action much longer than a standard 98 Mauser. But A square has a .450 based on a shortened Rigby case that will outperform the Win and the Lott and fit in a standard magazine.
.450 A-Square beltless.

I would have to agree with Chuck375 and Dorleac that the best CLASSIC rounds for a Mauser 98 and the ONLY ones I would consider for a high end custom rifle would be the Jeffrey duo mentioned above.
If I were to rechamber a .458 Win Mag I would consider the .458AR (Accurate Reloading) based on a blown out and shortened .404 case or the .450 A-Square pictured above based on a 2.5" improved Rigby case. The .375 Dakota and .375 Ruger would be better choices than the .375H&H for a 98.

An 8x68S case necked up, or .375 Ruger necked up could also be considered, even if the .8x68S was shortened to 2.5" or 2.6". It would still have increased capacity over the .458 WM. and with a 40 degree shoulder, more enough for proper headspace. None hand loaders need not apply.

Sounds like some new wildcats to me. LOL

I'd make them up for Jose L. in Spain, if I had a Ruger .375 - hmmmmm - might know just where to get one!

Halfway through building this 416 Ruger on a standard M98. Cartridge fits nicely in the action with some of the normal mods.

The Ruger should produce the goods, 400gr. at 2,400fps, at lower pressures than the .416 Taylor or .416 Remington, having 6gr. more capacity than the Rem. - too, it does not have that useless belt, either.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to running it over the crony to see what she'll do fps wise. Just running the off the shelf Hornady ammo til I get some dies. I've got some 350gr woodleighs to try when I do.

He wasn't saying the cartridge was useless, just the belt, and he's dead right too. With positive shoulder angle there is no need for a belt. It was just marketing tool on most 1950's and newer magnums which is why they are doing away with them now as they are no longer a worthy selling feature.

I think the belt is needed for non-bottleneck rimless cartridges, but I agree with you both they are not needed on a bottleneck cartridge. Doesn't seem to hurt anything though, the 375 H&H feeds "like butter".

My .375 H&H Mag is also on a standard length action and seems to work OK if projectiles are seated in far enough.

The .404 and .500 Jeffery as mentioned are good choices.

Nothing zipped over anyone's head - I saw the barb - my statement stands, the belt is useless, not needed on a cgt. with enough shoulder of headspace.

A belt neither makes nor breaks a round - it just that most don't need it.

Anyone who thinks a belt is needed on either the Taylor or the H&H - well, they're still on a long learning streak.

I agree Daryl, the belt is superfluous on a cartridge with a reasonbable shoulder.

Must be why I have 3 375H&H belted magnum rifles (and, to be fair, one double flanged magnum!).

The belt works ok on my 458win mag.

Would love another 404J, and a 505Gibbs or even 500J would be nice too!

If you have a gimmick why not have the original first one, the .375 H&H Magnum was the first with a magnum belt wasn't it?

Now the next commercial advertising gimmick is to tell everyone the belt is useless and everyone needs to buy a new rifle in some rimless beltless cartridge chambering. Why else would anyone buy a Remington or Winchester ...

Funny enough I think it was Winchester that really made the 375 H&H Belted magnum popular. Of course they then used it for their other eponymous cartridges.

I think an earlier H&H round was first to use the belt, though Pierre van der Walt writes it was actually an earlier American invention.

the belt is indeed useless

you need it only in big machine canons.

you will find that any machine canon over 30 mm caliber use a beltet or rimmed case. why, when the rimless case with an extractor groove is the very best design for an automatic action?
such machine canons handle the rounds with such brutal force that cases making headspace over the neck will be set back when chambered. only belted or rimmed cases will be strong enough to handle such power and hold the original head space.

As Marrakai rolls his eyes ....

A belt may have been an idea and a gimmick but the rifles with belted catrdiges are not useless. I wonder now if that comment - ie the .375 H&H is obsolete and useless - was also said tongue in cheek considering the writer uses a .375 Weatherby Magnum and also admits to using a .375 H&H Magnum a lot, did he say somewhere he has more than rifle in this chambering.

Back to Marrakai's suggestion. I once wanted a .416 Chatfield-Taylor, the .458 Win Mag necked down to .416 and which works excellently in standard M98's.

I remember once being amused by a particular forum's netperts praising the performance of a .450/400 but saying the .416 Taylor was sub-marginal on the same game. Yet very similar ballistic perfomance. Made more friends that day when I pointed this out. From my keyboard knowledge of these two cartridges only however.
