Looks like the Kodiak 375 and Barnes 300 gr. TSX bullets are a good combo on water buffalo. I killed this one and 2 more with this combo, and they performed flawlessly. None of the bulls ran over 50 yards after being hit through the chest. Every shot was a frontal shot going into the chest cavity. Of course I did keep shooting until they hit the ground, but I doubt the follow up shots were needed. I was able to recover several bullets just under the skin on the off side of the bulls. Picture perfect performance for the gun and bullets!

Nice work, Toby.

Mattie K runs a very professional operation. Coincidentally, my youngest daughter was just out at Carmor swanning around with her mates when a fishing trip got blown out, the weekend before your trip I think.

There are some very practical medium-velocity .375 calibre cartridges around these days, and since imitation is sincere flattery, hat's off to H&H for "inventing" the concept over a century ago!

Again, congratulations sir, a lovely bull!

Thanks! Yes, the old H&H is about as good as it gets for comfortable shooting and effectiveness on big game.

Great stuff, and a nice buff. Very happy with my kodiak. It likes the 270gr woodleighs and 300gr barns, both under 1". So far I have taken red, fallow and sambar deer, warthog, Impala, baboon, zebra and gemsbuck. It has performed well on all and is a handy gun in the bush.

I did some testing today with Barnes 300gr TSX with Winchester 748 powder, in the Sako Kodiak 375 H&H. As stated before, this gun has a 21 1/4" barrel. I started off with 74.2 gr. This is slightly under the max load of 75gr. in the Barnes manual. I got an average of 2539 fps for 3 shots. I was satisfied with this velocity, so I stopped there. I saw no pressure signs of any kind, and the recoil and muzzle blast were very manageable. Bolt lift was easy, and primers looked fine. Barnes also lists this load as the most accurate they tried. So, I am very satisfied with this velocity from a shortish barrel. I'm sure it would get 2600 out of a 24" gun. Once I get some more bullets, I will try this load in my Kimber Talkeetna, and share my results.

Sounds great, Toby. I chronographed Factory 300gr. WW Silvertips from a factory ZKK602 BRNO at 2,474fps.

Darrel

What length barrel did BRNO have?

After all of the above load work up with W748, I read that Barnes has resended it's data using W748 powder in the 375 H&H. I wrote an email to Barnes to get their take on it.
I'll let you know what they say.

24.3" seems to me. They had a fairly long barrel.
I have Hodgdon's latest manual and it lists H414 and W760 as the same powder(Identical ballistics) and do not list 748 with any bullet weights, not even the 200gr. .375Win, bullet, nor the H&H 235gr. Speer.

I heard back from Barnes bullets, regarding their W748 data. They said their data for that powder can be somewhat high pressure in some guns. But, he said that since I worked up to my load and didn't experience any pressure signs, then my load should be safe. That being said, it looks like W748 is a great powder for achieving standard H&H velocity with a short barrel gun. I feel like anything over 2500 fps is just right. So, I am satisfied with my results for sure.

I-too would be happy with those results from such a short barrel - even 2,470fps, same as factory ST's from that BRNO.

The 300gr. load that helped gain the .375H&H it's reputation, was listed at 2,400fps, while the other load, the kill-like-lightening 270gr. SP load, was published as producing 2,600fps.
