Two Rifles for the world?

1.) Ruger 10/22 in .22 long rifle with a good 4X scope

2.) A Kimber Caprivi in .375 H&H fitted with a Swarovski EE 1X-6X Scope in Talley Bases and Fixed Rings. The .375 H&H could take anything that walks on the earth. Overpowered for a 100 lbs deer but it would still do the job without a lot of damaged meat.

Don't forget a good shotgun (dosen't count as a rifle) with buckshot and slugs it could handle a lot if you watch the range.

I have trouble picturing anyone shooting a coyote with a 318 Westlt Richards

Why? I once shot a dingo at over 200 metres with my .375 H&H and 300 gr RNSPs ... probably was a lucky shot.

My choices would be:
1. .375 Flanged Magnum in a side by side modern double, well fitted and regulated for a low powered scope. Perhaps a nice Heym that I looked at last year.

This could be used on everything from medium game, to elephant. Longer range shooting potential with the scope, and in a well balanced lighter framed .375 DR very handy.

2. The second rifle would have to be able to take longer ranged shots on small and medium game. And be light enough to carry up and down mountains. So a .22 centrefire at the bottom, to something like a 7mm, .30, 8mm towards the top. Really I would go for a changeable barrel design as two rifles and calibres for everything is not realistic.

Probably a 7x64, or .30-06, .300 or similar in a M98 type design. A single shot would be good, but lack the magazine if shooting lots of beasts.

The other choice would be a .222 or .22 Hornet bolt action rifle which can handle rimfire jobs or bigger small stuff.

My Mauser M03 with a .222 barrel, a 8x68S barrel, a 6.5x65 barrel and a .404 barrel, would make the second choice quite easy.

Now that .404 would change the .375 Flanged Magnum into a .500 or .577.

3. As no one with intelligence can do without a shotgun, there would definitely be a good side by side shotgun in that two rifle gun case as well.

I already have the two rifles I would need for this hypothetical hunting experience:

Krieghoff "Teck" O/U double rifle in .458 Winchester Magnum, with interchangeable barrel sets in .375 H&H and 20gauge 3" Magnum.

Mauser 66 in 7X66 SE vom Hofe, with interchangeable barrels in 8X68 and 9.3X64.

They are not my most cherished guns, but they would do the job on anything I would care to hunt worldwide. If I had to go somewhere where ammunition resupply was a problem, then my old 7X57 on a G33/40 action or my pre-64 Model 70 in .300 H&H would serve nicely as a second rifle in place of the Mauser.

Wow Great minds think alike.

Love the 7x66 SEVH choice.

I hunted coyote for money in the 80s and one rifle I used a LOT was a 375H&H with 300 gr solids.
The big bullet would put them down and never destroy a hide. At $90 each (the good ol days0 you didn't want to blow a big hole through them.
I bet in a 3 year period I killed about 125 to 150 coyotes with that rifle.

Why not one gun - but with easily changed, multiple barrels?

A fellow over on a small bore forum, has 3 Savage rifles(to make the switching simpler. For those 3 Savage rifles, he has 14 different barrels chambered for cgts. in three groups - .378" bolt face, .470" bolt face and .532" bolt face - so his barrels run from .17 Mach IV to .416 Remington magnum with many in between.

You actually do not 'really' need 3 different rifles, as if a person has just one of those rifles, but the 3 different bolt faces, he can interchange to every ctg. the fellow noted above can change to. One would need to start with a magnum action, though - might seem 'big/long' for the .17MK4 or the .22-250's, .308's, etc.

The Savage system of changing barrels is perfectly modeled for the one gun - 20 different ctg. shooter - if he so wishes.

Someone of that site noted that he was changing over 1 or more of his 'other' rifles (Remington) to the Savage System. All he had to do was to make his own collars & thread the barrels long.

The system is a wonderful one as NO headspace gauges are required - the 'work' of changing the barrels can be done on the kitchen table and headspacing is accomplished using your own ammo, wind the barrel in with round in the chamber until it stops against the bolt, lock the locking ring and down - thus, headspace is always 0 - which is perfect.

Might still be able to Google "Sharpshooter Supply" for info on replacement Savage barrels. IIRC- $325.00 - chambered, contoured, finished and ready to drop into your action - Innexpensive to the extreme!

1. Mauser 98 in 300 Win Mag. 24 inch featherweight barrel equipped with banded iron sights and a barrel band sling swivel. Cerekoted black with a McMillan edge stock painted brown with black and tan speckles and a red recoil pad. Put some QD rings on it and a 3x9 scope of some flavor.

2. Heym Martini in 375 H&H. 1x5 power scope of some flavor in QD mounts.

If my house burned down and I had to buy new guns, those would be the two I would use the insurance money to buy/build rather than replace all the old rifles. Seems a perfect combo for hunting all over the world.

Reliable bolt action rifles based on Mauser action chambered for 300 H&H and the 400 H&H.
I would be sad not having a chance to include over and under/side by side 12 gauge shotgun.

How about re-phrasing the question to specify two rifles that a hunter might actually acquire and hunt with ...

Some of the rarified calibers or chamberings mentioned here, like the 425WR what-cha-majig or the 550 Unobtainium, just aren't real-world practical. More for fantasy hunting or, better still, fireside daydreaming after a long day of ... fishing.

The goal of a two-rifle battery for big game should be 2 rifles that are readily obtainable and would be effective on 95%+ of BG species worldwide.

For me, those rifles are a 300 H&H magnum and a .404 Jeffery.

300H&H.

.404 Jeffery.

If limited to one do-it-all rifle worldwide, well, the choice is easier: my semi-custom .375 H&H BRNO 602.

I wouldn't need an unlimited budget to get the best, since I already have a Remington 700 mountain rifle in 7x57 and a Winchester 86 in 45-70, I don't have to look any further.

Best quality Daniel Fraser side lever 303
450NE rising bite Rigby (which would need to shoot well with the 75% bullet weight)

I would have said a WR 318 bolt and Royal 500, but I know of no way to improve the above suggestions. I've got a soft spot for side levers and Fraser is my bar-none favorite maker.
