458 Lott vs 458 Win Mag?
      #22836 - 30/12/04 04:29 AM

Anyone out there have the duel experience of shooting both the 458 Win Mag (458 WM) and the 458 Lott? I know that Buffalo Bore is making some very good 458 WM ammo these days, but is it still as effective as the Lott chambering? I think not . . .

My concern is regarding Cape buffalo. I've heard good things about the 458 Lott, and both good and bad stories regarding the 458 WM. Just looking for opinions from experienced hunters.

Thanks

the problems with the 458 win came around as soon as it was brought out. winchester made it to fit in a standard length action. This did not allow enough powder capacity to get to that 2200-2400FPS velocity. It then got itself a bad name in africa because the low velocity didn't always yield enough penetration. Hence jack lotts creation. The case if just enough longer to allow for the extra powder capacity. Rechambering a 458 to the lott is easy, and you can still fire regular 458's in it this makes it a logical round. Fire both before you decide which to hunt with. the lott's recoil is quite heavy, and some can't shoot it well. If you can, by all means use it.

Hey Tit-Hound... You are correct, the .458 Win has made a slight come-back due to better ammo but it is still short of what the Lott can do with ease. As your about 1 1/2 hour drive from me, you are most welcome to drop by and try a couple of different Lott's that I have on hand..

I agree that the .458 Lott is a better round than the win mag..However new ammo has not made the win mag the Lott's equal but the win mag is better than it was in the old days. I feel that if you are shooting buff at less than 50 yards you will do fine with either. I do disagree on the subject of recoil I have never found there to be a great difference in recoil, except I feel the win mag may have a sharper kick, maybe I'm just not right! My final word is go with the Lott,It always managed to get Jack off.

The .470 NE I had spit out 500 gr. bullets at about 2125 fps. That round was field proven for several decades before the 458 WM or Lott were wet dreams.

You can kill any buff that ever walked with a 375, so a 458 going around 2100 fps is more than enough, for buff. Maybe not the best, but good enough.

Using a good bullet is probably more important.

Hey Will,

Man, I'd love to have a 470 NE! Do you know where I can get one for the same price I can get a nice bolt action CZ550, Win 70 or Ruger safari rifle for? The only 470s I've seen are in double rifles.

Sir
i had a ruger #1 in 458 lott she was a cannon. 500 grains at 2300fps no problems. I put together a 458 winmag myself. I was getting 450grain bullets to 2200fps with no problems. Took both a buffalo and elephant with the winmag. The lott was my backup gun

The 458 Win with a good handload or a factory load at 2000 FPS or better is all in the world one needs on Buffalo..I would chronograph any factory round before using it however..

The 458 Lott is a hands down better round for buffalo, a real thumper..I have used/observed both in action on Buffalo..The Lott would be my choice of the two...

That said I prefer a 416 to either of them....and if I want a big gun, I will pull out my Searcy 470 double. Just my choice, not a condemnation of the 458s at all.....

Hello all,
I'm according with Atkinson6, the .458 Lott is a good cartridge for hunting in Africa. I know this bores, but I prefer the .416 Rigby. Why?
I have never seen a difference on buffalos/hippos. But the
.416 Rigby has a flat trajectory that the Lott. You shot a
range of 350 Yards, whit the Lott is impossible.
The .416 Rigby have a low pressure, the .458 Lott no.
If you must take only one rifle in Africa, this is a .416 Rigby.
At soon.
