Based on 460 Wby case.

Compare to 505 Gibbs

Popular - no, not really, especially
since CZ have factory guns now in big bores.

Gentlemen,

I have a Heym Express in .500 A-Square.
Like the colleagues wrote, it is the .460 Weatherby enlarged for .510 bullets.

A-Square ammunition is advertised as 600grs bullets @ 2470fps.
My rifle weighs 4,6 kg and has no muzzle brake, so some kind of humor is needed to fire more shots with "standard" ammunition.

best regards
Rolf

My 500 Jeffery is also brakeless and a 570g bullet at 2410 fps (as fast as I've loaded, my hunting rounds are down loaded to 2300 fps) is more than I like. 570g at 2300 fps is just fine by me

I have an A2 Hannibal that I picked up about 5 or 6 years ago. The cartridge itself is comparatively practical and easy to reload. I had my rifle Mag-na-ported as I can't stand muzzle brakes. Recoil, while stout, isn't too bad until you get over 2400 fps, when the kick picks up something of a snap. I'm good for about 12-15 accurate rounds of full power stuff per session. I've pushed 570/600 grain bullets to slightly over 2500 fps before backing off ...

As you can see, I'm a fan of the Mag-na-porting process. The bottom one is the A2.

Here's my 500 Jeffery, for some reason a 570g or 600g bullet at 2300 fps seems just fine like analog says for 10 shots offhand at the range. In the field you don't notice recoil at all. Once I cross the line to 2400 fps the recoil seems sharper and more punishing.

I am in same camp as Chuck375 and prefer my classic 505 Gibbs from CZ. I would say 500A2 was relatively popular as these things go prior to CZ introduction of the two big 50 classics.I dont want one myself, but I think the 500A2 is an optimum modern design of a 50 cal DG cartridge. As the above photos show, more/less like a scaled up 458 Lott. Just right size, not rebated like the Jeff or banana cordite size capacity like the Gibbs.

The 500 A square has the same bolt face as the 416 Rigby. A CZ550 or Ruger in 416 Rigby can be barreled for 500A2 with little else done to get a safari grade 50 cal rifle. That about as easy as it gets.

BTW, all cartridge drawing are available on line. I will look for a link and edit this post later. The one I am thinking of is in Spanish. It is free and easy to navigate once you get the hang of it. You dont need to speak Spanish to find the ctg & pics or read the dimensioned drawing.

Select the Fuego CF tab on left expands the list.
The pick a catagory like : 11.4 -17mm
then pick a ctg like 500Asquare and there you go, A Drawing of 500A2:

The CIP standard ctg drawing were available online as well. Last time I visited the site it was messed up and now I dont even have the link on this computer. If someone has a link to the unbroken site, I'd like to see that and add to my favorites. Those would be official numbers and I believe(?) both English and metric, which is convenient for making comparisons. I forget ...maybe not both.

Here is the site (but I dont see how to get the drawing PDF files):

Here is a teaser (how to get more?, Table I and II are for rifle ctgs):

I found the SAAMI has approved the 500 A-square. I was surprised not to be able to find 500Jef or 505Gibbs at SAAMI. I do see both of those at the CIP site, but; no A square. That could be my error at either site. And, I am still unable to access the drawings at the CIP site.

This link will show the 500A2 and you can [return to table contents] for other drawings:

I hope I am not getting too carried away here. I had forgotten about this site. He gives a very nice summary of the big bore ctgs.

The 500 a square is quite versatile. It can easily be pushed to 9300 ft.lbs. Not really needed but it will do it.

.500 Barnes Supreme, same case - .460 WTBY. The fellow's rifle in .505 Barnes Supreme that I shot as a 22year old kid, was a new ZKK 602 in .375 that had been re-barreled. I bought the original unfired .375 barrel w/sights for $50.00 - I think it was.

I do recall his box of ammo was marked 125gr. IMR3031, 600gr. Barnes FMJ .049" 2,600fps, but that might have been an estimate. Few people then had chronographs, but our club did.

Do not quote nor use that data as-is - it's from memory only and was scribbled on a piece of paper, from 40 years ago.

I do not know if that was excessive, hot, medium or light (sounds hot) - it made my .375 BRNO feel like a .22 Hornet.

I do recall the rifle weighed less than 9 pounds - he said 8 1/2 with it's 4X Weaver.
