Keep in mind that the .600 NE and the .700 NE have lackluster penetration, weigh too much for most humans to carry on a long stalk, and kick too much for most humans to shoot accurately.

I would love to own a .600 Double..but if I was in liberty to choose any from the shelf a .577Nitro would for me seems best. It weigh less, kick less( but enough) and is just as classic as them all together. However any choice of gun is an individual choice.

Search under the member name "Kamikaze" on NE and you will find a .600 NE handgun, videos of it being shot etc.

Cal Pappas has written a nice book on the 600 NE. Mostly about doubles though. It shows everything you want to know about them.

the 600 is the limit of my recoil tolerance i would not want to go higher and cant ever see myself being able to own a 700 but hey i thought i would never own a double now own several i guess when you really want something you make it happen

I thought the lack of penetration of the .700 were not an issue with the .600?

BTW just from armchair reading, not actual game shooting.

The .600 has the same problem, only not as bad. Both guns suffer from the following problems:

- excessive cost
- excessive weight
- excessive recoil
- marginal penetration
- intermittent ignition problems

The ignition problems in the .600 are solved by using a slow burning powder that fills the case so that there is no empty air space.

The ignition problems in the .700 are partly solved by using a filler below the bullet to take up unused empty space in the case, plus putting a grain or two of pistol powder right on top of the primer to get ignition started.

I think the ignition problems in the .700 NE would be completely solved by using a 50 BMG primer, but the cases are not set up for that and I am not sure the firing pin strikes hard enough for them.

Years ago, I was given a .600 NE cartridge made by Imperial.
Pulled out the bullet and there was a loose primer inside the powder. Poor quality control or some clever way for reliable ignition?

With the 'extra' primer in mind, know that years ago, John Buhmiller experimented with placing a standard primer, cup-down on top of the load, beneath the bullet's base. Thus, the bullet's base in a 100% loading, held the primer at that location. The reason for this experimentation and use was to bolster or improve the burning or inconsistant burning of power found in most straight cased loads with today's stick or ball powders.

My own experimentation with John's methods (you are on your own) was when loading in my .458 2" American using H335 powder. I found a reduction in powder of 8gr., along with the primer on top of the powder, produced the same ballistics as before, but resulted in a cleaner bore, less fouling after the shot. Accuracy with this M98 VZ actioned rifle was always cloverleafs, so I could not tell of any difference regarding accuracy.

The intersting findings was that with 60.0gr. H335, I achieved the same balistics as normally found from a heavily compressed load of 68.0gr. when using the 400gr. Barnes bullets - ie: 2,200fps.

As this load was also used with the 500gr. Hornady bullets for 2,059fps, it was not what I would call maximum with the 400's. The same load produced 2,290fps with 350's.
