416 ruger loads
      #177575 - 23/03/11 08:06 PM

Hi guy's, I've had a quick look & search & come up empty. Some loads have been given, but I'm just wondering if someone has the starting & maximum loads for the 416 Ruger, using 400gn bullets & ADI powder, preferably AR2208.

Cheers

G'day, I just pulled this off AmmoGuide.com; it uses IMR-4064, which is the equivalent of AR2208:

Bullet Wt. (gr): 400

Powder Type: IMR-4064

Charge (gr): 75.0 (Full Case)

Muzzle Vel. (fps): 2467

K.E. (ft-lbs): 5408

Pressure: ?

Barrel Length (in): 22

Overall Length (in): 3.297

Load submitted by 'damgoodshot'.
This load was developed using Hornady round-nosed, jacketed, soft-point, flat-based bullets (RN interbond).
In terms of power, the developer considers this a MAXIMUM load and notes this charge fills the case.
The velocity measurement is by chronograph.
Hornady cases and CCI 250 primers were used in development.

COMMENTS:
Start with 70.0 and work up - max in my rifle

Gundog
I have been experimenting with AR2208 powder and 400gr frontier bullets in my Ruger 416 Alaskan.
On another site it was suggested to use the 416Rem starting load as a starting point for the 416Ruger which is 72grs Ar2208. I started with 74 grs AR2208 and currently am running with 77.5 grs AR2208 for 2378 fps but that is with the design bullet I am using. I am using a magnum primer to get them started.

You should be right starting at 74 grs and working up looking for signs of pressure as you go.

The new Hornady volume 8 has load data for the 416 Ruger but dont think it has ADI powders and it may not be avial in Oz as yet.

Some reloaders have purchased the number 8 edition on line from overseas.

Oh! by the way 77.5grs is starting to get close to a full case with slight compression with the bullets seated to the length I am using. The style of bullet and seating depth you use will determine the compression amount.

Sounds like a soft load bigjedd and since it's starting to be compressed, the next faster burning powder will be needed to get peak ballistics. Depends on what you want. How's it shoot?

Darryl it shoots pretty good 2" group at 100yds with open sights which is okay for what it is designed for. The 2378fps I thought was okay from a 20" barrel and is around what the original 416Rigby was renown for so I am happy with it. I use the 2208 powder in a lot of other calibres so its economical to utilise the same powder. Having said that I have been toying with going to a different powder as some 400 gr projectiles are longer than the fronTiers and I want reliability at reasonable pressure rather than high velocity.

The 416Ruger and 416Rem are virtual twins. Look at 416Rem data for your start points.

Thanks for the replies. I was going to use 416Rem data if I drew a blank here, as I'd read somewhere that their case capacity was similar. I did email ADI about it, but as yet I've had no reply.

Cheers

Guys went out today to try some 400 and 340gr loads using AR2206H powder
The 400gr frontiers pushed by 76 grs AR2206H averaged 2361 Fps for 5 shots with no sign of pressure and, I was able to seat the bullets to the cannelure with no compression of the powder Although the case was full.
I was also able to get a crimp on the projectile which I wasnt able to do before due to the bullet seating to far out from the cannelure and causing what to me was excess compression.

The 340 gr woodleighs pushed by 80grs 2206H averaged 2584 fps easily with no pressure sign and no compression to speak of.

I am reasonable happy with these velocities from a 20" barrel. I will work up a bit more to see how it goes before excess pressure dictates to back off but If I can average 2400 fps with the 400grs I will be happy and wont push any harder.

These loads were safe in "MY RIFLE ONLY". I would suggest you work up to them slowly in your rifle.

Done a bit more work using 2206H powder today.
Using 77 grs 2206H and 400 gr frontiers I was able to gain just 15fps more velocity taking the average for 5 shots to 2376fps, but the grouping has improved. The pressure is starting to get up there with this load and so is the compression with the longer bullets. I am happy with how it works so will leave it at that for now till I get some different projectiles.

The surprise was with the 340gr woodleighs using 81grs 2206H I was able to get an average of 2655fps and group size for five shots was 1.184" I am happy with this load and will now go and hunt something to try the bullets on game.

"THESE ARE SAFE LOADS IN MY RIFLE ONLY PLEASE WORK UP CAREFULLY".

This is the ballistics for the 340 gr woodleighs with the average velocities I have been able to acheive. Figures are according to Hornadys ballistic calculator.
It looks like this could be a very handy hunting load.

9.9" low at 300 - easily a good 300 to 350 yard plains game load - with a bit of practise.
