question about 476 WR

hey--newbie here with a newbie question--

i am trying to learn about WR doubles at the moment and am currently at this question:

of the extant westley richards doubles that are out there (vintage, new, whatever--all of them) what is the prevalence of the .476 chambering? i am somewhat aware of the cartridge's history/development....

how popular was/is it?
even though it was 'proprietary' did any other makers
ever chamber guns for it?

To my knowledge, it was strictly a proprietary WR load. How popular? I own one, so I assume that is sufficient to ensure its immortality. I heard someone named Keith liked it too, but don't know if that impacts on its position in the pantheon of popularity. Dave

I have seen one (part of a pair) made for the maharaja of Coochbihar in India. The second was made for the maharani - a 280. They are still owned by a friend's father-in-law - the last I heard.

By the way, from a ballistics standpoint, as well as 'real world', there is no difference between the 476, the 475, 475 No.2, 470, 500/465 etc. All ballistic replacements for the 450 NE post ban. The WR is probably not that common only because it was strictly a WR load, like the proprietary H&H 500/465 and unlike the 'released for trade 470 and the 475 crew. Dave

Interestingly, as dnovo indicates, I too have never seen a .476 that wasn't a WR rifle, but I have seen a WR rifle chambered in .500/.465. I was a later gun - '50s - so the .476 ammo was probably harder to find by then than the H&H loading, thus the unusual cartridge choice.

The 'old' WR versus the new. I believe ownership changed at some point post WWII and WR was not loading its own ammo and Kynoch was getting more and more out of the business. Newer (post WWII) a DR builder would build pretty much what the customer wanted. The 476 was simply not as well known, and a customer who wanted a gun from WR, or any other builder, got what he wanted.

The days of H&H only building the 500/465 went by the way, and if you wanted a 470 NE or whatever, they would build it. Same for WR and others. Dave

Actually the Holland & Holland 500/465 is still current production, if that's what you were referring to? I have seen a William Evans chambered in 476WR and also a Army Navy, both special order obviously. But they do excist.

I think he meant that H&H will/do make DRs in non-proprietary chamberings.
I've seen an Evans too and I'm pretty sure I saw a Lancaster .476 years ago but I may be mistaken.

Jabil translated correctly. The days of 'proprietary' chambering are long gone. Of course H&H will build you a DR in 'their own' 500/465 and WR will still build a 476 if you ask. But they will both do the opposite on request. Dave

The naked truth is if you have money they will build what ever you want. Case in point the .700 NE. The cartridge ego built it has no practical purpose except to say “I have the biggest”. The finely dressed help at H&H or other fine maker. Will be most attentive taking all your measurements and listing your preferences on your bespoke gun. Then after you have paid your deposit and left they will roll there eyes and make little inside comments about that “gosh gentleman”.

I have quite a few boxes of Westley Richards 476 ammo. This is the original Kynoch ammo with the 520 grain bullet. I am in Chile and can probably send you one through the post office.

I had a beautiful Westley 476 in its original case. It was built in 1928 and was one of the most accurate doubles I ever owned. I wish I had it back. It was very easy to load for and was not fussy about what powder I used. I have a group that was shot at 55 yards with right and left shots touching. It was a pleasure to shoot and a beautiful rifle as well.
