Tanzania price update
      #89906 - 27/11/07 11:47 PM

FWIW, Tanzania radio has just broadcast the news that the TZ Government has announced that the new price increases have been reduced by approximately 45% (I assume) across the board. Hopefully they'll put it in writing with exact revised prices in the next few days........

That is interesting as the last article I read --it seemed Tanzania was going to hold tough on the rate increase--if that is true it would be great news..

It's possible that Tanzanian officials deliberately started out with a outrageous price increase schedule in order to negotiate back down to the actual price increase that they were hoping to achieve in the first place...........

You are probably correct--worst case, if the outcry wasn't that bad they could stick to the higher prices--if pressure was too high they could still reduce too where they initally wanted anyway..

I don't think they're organised enough for that - my guess is that the proposal sat on someone's desk and got forgotten about until the last minute and then instigated anyway. The written announcement wasn't just about the price increases, it also contained a lot of accusations of corruption both in the industry and inside the game department. - Frankly (IMO) it was extremely dubious in that it mentioned a lot of names but didn't provide any proof of anything, nor did it publish the name of the author or authors. That might also be a part of why the increases were produced at such short notice.

This was on SCI's recent monthly email..

Ripp

Tanzania Fee Increases Released; New Director
The government of Tanzania has released their much-anticipated 2008 concession and trophy fees, which will be slightly less than what SCI heard in earlier reports. Concession fees have increased roughly 50% and trophy fees have increased about 15% on average. For example, lion fees increased almost $5,000 while elephant fees have increased either $7,500, $12,000 or $20,000, depending on the size of the elephant taken. The full list of the new 2008 fees can be found on www.tanzaniahunt.org. SCI also heard that negotiations were still on-going for the 2009 prices. We will keep you posted. SCI has also received a communication from private sources in Tanzania that a new Wildlife Director has been named. Educated in the United States, Mr. Erasmus M. Tarimo has just taken over the Wildlife Department in Dar es Salaam. (Source: Tanzania Hunting Operators Association)
