Your dream battery of safari rifles.............
      #48372 - 29/01/06 04:22 AM

Just for fun, let's say you had a rich uncle who generously offered you the opportunity have your dream battery of African safari guns put together, with a maximum of four individual firearms. Your uncle would pick up the entire tab, and you would not be restricted by any spending limits to put this dream battery together. All selections are entirely your own. Uncle is only paying the bill......

What would you choose, and why?

Boy oh Boy Allen! You're really opening up a can of worms here ! Ok, I'll start it off:

1. A lovely vintage DR from Rigby, in .470 Nitro Express. (Who wouldn't want one?)

2. A bolt action from Rigby in, what else, .416 Rigby. (Same reason as above)

3. A custom Winchester Mod.70 in .375 Ackley, to be the
twin of the one I now own.(It's my favorite rifle)

4. A Holland & Holland 12 guage, side by side. (I held on a few years ago, and it was incredible!)

See, I didn't get too greedy. And with the money I saved my dear uncle, perhaps he would pay for my Safaris to test them out.

Here's mine:

1. Westley Richards sidelock .500 nitro (new)

2. Purdey sidelock 450/400 (new)

3. Dakota 76 Traveler African grade in .375 and .300 H&H

4. Boss side by side 12 gauge

If my most generous uncle considers the Dakota's second barrel as two guns I'll order the .300 barrel later

Allen,

I would certainly like to hear your choices. You have forgotten more than I'll ever know about the higher end offerings.

Based on what little I know, I'm sure I'd mix in a D'Arcy Echols DG rifle in a 458 Lott and a plains game rifle from him in a 30-06. I realize that those may be boring calibers to most, but I'm a boring caliber kind of guy. These would be stocked with his version of the McMillan synthetic stock. Hopefully, these two would get enough use and wear that I am required to have them reblued annually.

I would require only one more rifle. It would be a 375 H&H done by the Biesens (open sights only) that would be nice enough that they would be reluctant to turn it over to me when finished. This would be the rifle that I would coon finger back in camp while fantasizing about the hunts to come. Knowing that I could use this rifle on any of them and look quite stylish in the process.

Longbob, if you ever get a Biesen 375 H&H, I think you'll be glad you did. There's a nice one for sale on their website right now:

www.biesen.com

I'll name some guns I don't have as my dream battery......

1) Echols "Classic" on a Model 70 action in 375 H&H, 24" bbl., with French walnut stock, red "Silvers" pad, open sights, detachable mounts -- the works.

2) Echols "Classic" on a Model 70 action in 300 H&H, French walnut stock, scope-only, but otherwise closingly matching the 375 H&H.

3) Westley Richards best-quality double with 26" bbls. in 500 NE........

4) Winchester Model 21 12 gauge, 26" bbls. IC/M, pistol grip stock.

That's as far as I'd personally every want to go

Allen,

I saw that rifle and it is exactly the one that I would like to have. I've got way too many rifles and I need to do a major fire sale. Then I could end up with my "perfect battery." With, of course, a couple of back-ups.

Allen,

With that big cheque book open then:

30/378 and 378 Weatherbys with birdseye maple and Kreiger cut barrel and action work etc and plain barrels.

300 H&H and 375 H&H Echols with wood and with sights and detachable mounts.

Like the Weatherbys, the only difference between the two Echols would be the hole in the barrel and the grain difference between the two stocks.

Mike

For some reason those Holland 500/465 really get me. As soon as I can afford one there will be one in my safe. I am jealous. Any chance you could post more pics and info on it?

The wisest post so far!

But it's a rich fantasy uncle who's going to pay for all the guns, so your post doesn't count!

Hartmann & Weiss Take-down M98 Magnum Mauser, 416 Rigby

Hartmann & Weiss Take-down M98 Mauser, 7x64 Brenneke

David McKay Brown round action, 450NE 3 1/4

Purdey self-opening, 20 gauge

McKay Brown round action:

I would also request from this rich fantasy uncle that he foots the bill for a yearly month long safari for the two of us, so he can see the guns in action.

Holland Royal SLE in .577 x 2 3/4 NE,

Jeffery SLE with 24in barrels in .400 3inch NE,

Mannlicher Schoenauer M1903 carbine in 6.5 MS with factory clip-off Pecar or Kahles scope,

Westley Richards drop-lock ejector 12-bore 'Explora'.

...and then I woke up!

Anyone spot my deliberate mistake?
I left out the Rigby SLE .470 with Bissell-patent rising third bite!

My fantasy choices:

.500 3" NE - H&H or Westley Richards sidelock - for the big stuff close up.

.450/.300 3" or 3 1/4", scoped in QD mounts - as my general 'medium' bore double rifle, larger plains game or plains game as needed. Perhaps even a modern made DR in .500/.416 .

.300 H&H Mag Johannsen (or similar) M98 takedown, scoped - plains game rifle and world medium game hunting rifle. Takedown so it fits in a nice DR sized case. Perhaps a second barrel in .375 H&H.

Purdey 12-bore side by side - for some relaxing bird shooting between the 21 day elephant safaris my rich Uncle will pay for me. After all it is no good having all the hardware without having safaris to use them on!

I seem to have gravitated to good sturdy classic American made guns..... My “dream gun” list is as follows:

1. 1956 Winchester M70 458 African Super Grade
2. 1958 Winchester M70 338 Win Mag
3. 1963 Winchester M70 300 Win Mag
(All first year of production for the caliber), and
4. 1957 Winchester M21 12ga. 28”, .018/.027, pg, sf

Nothing fancy, just basic, quality tools.

Through the years I’ve collected/used scores of long guns (many of which I still own), including; Custom German Weatherby’s, High Grade Belgian Browning’s, Pre-64 M70’s, and custom made guns, in most all the calibers/gauges.... even a few Rigby Mausers and Italian Shotguns. But the long road has led to this brace of Winchesters, as my “personal” top 4 guns. Like I said, nothing fancy, or majestic, but nothing that I’m ashamed to be seen with either.

And yes, I currently own my “dream” guns (a couple deep in several actually).

(edited to go with the 28" M21, if i could only have one, it'd have to be it... just a little more versatile)
