Elephant hunting
      #39522 - 22/10/05 04:38 PM

Hello all,
In January 2006, I go to hunt elephant in Cameroon, I have a bolt action in .416 Rigby, but I think that the .505 gibbs is better. What do you think of the .505 Gibbs for elephant hunting?

I have just finished reading (again) one of Sanchez Arino's books.

He swears by the 416 Rigby.

Anything a 416 will do a 505 Gibbs will do - it has everything needed
to flatten an Elephant if the shooter does the right thing.

If it were me, i would be taking the 505 ,Sanchez was told by J.A Hunter that'' nothing flattens an elephant like a 505 Gibbs

That's interesting - I thought J A HUnter used a 500 Nitro Double ?

I wold take a 505 Gibbs as well except mine is an Original and I would hate
to lose it.

He did use a 500 nitro ,BUT apparently he also used a 505 Gibbs ! if you read it carefully i think he confused himself, maybe from writing from ''memories''he did use both!! and remarked how the 505'' rocked the elephants when it hit them in the skull '',anyway if it were me on a elephant hunt ,and i had the choice between a 416 and 505 i would still take a 505 Gibbs

The 416 will do the job perfectly. The Ele won't know the difference between a 416 and a 505. I think the important factors are:

1) Shot placement.

2) With what rifle are you the most comfortable, if you flinch with a rifle you have problems.

I will take the rifle that I know best and that I am the most comfortable with. Both will do the job perfectly well.

Hatari,

I would like very much to hear more about your planned hunt in Cameroon! Is it in the northern savannah or southern rain forests? Are you doing it on your own (Chasse Libre), or with an outfitter/PH? Cameroon is on my "list of countrys to go to".

The above would also maybe make a differance when it comes to choosing a calibur. For example, on your own in the rainforest, I would think bigger would maybe better for you. Generally though, I would think that your 416 Rigby would be fine. Mind you, I have only limited knowledge as I've only shot 1 elephant, and that was with a 375H&H.

Hope you'll tell us more!

Btw, it would be nice if you could update your profile with your country of residence.

Erik

Yes, I understand, with my .416 Rigby I shoot short range ( in thick bush) like a long range (300 yard)and I use only one rifle during the safari. But with the .505 gibbs, the short range is good and maximum long range (160 yards), it's necessary a second rifle for plains games / I have in my permit: 1 Elephant, 1 lion and some antelopes.
I agree with you, this is the first shoot more important.

Hatari,

I have hunted and will hunt again in the CAR with Michel Angelvy.
This guy hunted many times in Cameroon and never have the opportunity of shooting a decent elephant .
In the same category he hunted 5 times in the CAR without having the opportunity to shoot a Derby's eland, that's why he rented his 600 0000 ha territory in the CAR and got elands.
My question :

with WHICH OUTFIT WILL YOU HUNT?

My hunt in Cameroon is organized by

I'm in north Cameroon near the Benoue lack.

In my first safari in Cameroon, I shoot this hippo.

For the Giant Eland of Derby, I think that the Central Africa is better that the cameroon.
