SILENT rifle for Africa
      #36333 - 23/08/05 05:50 AM

I am always amazed by the care most of You take in bringing 2 rifles in Africa. One for dangerous or big game and the other for plains game.

For the instant hunting the North of Africa, my concern is using a DG rifle and a shotgun for birds.
Last year in the CAR, there was no opportunity of wingshooting. There, the foxy hunter is bringing a silent rifle along with his DG rifle.
Next year I’ll stick with my 375HH and the legendary swift A frame but I have to find the best SILENT RIFLE.
Why a silent rifle? To shoot guinea fowl from the car or around, and francolins as well. But the most interesting varmint is the baboon dog. The baboon is a plague, they are eating any duikers at hand and worst the young antelopes such Roan, waterbuck, hartebeest....... even though the main preys are first the BUSHPIG and then the Warthog piglets.
Shooting females of any genus is against the law, so I may shoot Baboon dogs only.
Here in France I can choose among 5 types of Silent 22LR but only between 2 sorts of silent 222 Rem : the Russian cheap Baikal and the Czech well known Fox CZ 527.
1 Euro = 1.25 $
The 22LR is unefficient beyond 80 yards.
The Baikal is a bargain at 577 Euros but I fear the trigger could be tricky to customize.
The CZ seems more efficient and accurate but is fairly expensive 1080 Euros.
Add this a convenient scope ie Tasco Varmint 10-40*50, 297 Euros.
Mounting +/- 250 Euros.

Are You aware of other Silent 222 Rems?

JB,

if you are referring to the single shot, break action Baikal, then no problem. A friend of mine owns one in .222 and had the trigger worked on by a local smith who did an beautiful job and reported no problems. I understand it was quite straightforward. Dave has used his .222 on deer and I have only shot it on the range, it is amazingly accurate. Fitting it with a Vaime type moderator should again be a simple job for a smith, the only problem being the overall length and therefore balance when the moderator is fitted. For the cost involved for such a specialised piece, I'd be tempted to shorten the barrel prior to fitting the moderator and go with the Baikal.
Another friend of mine had a BRNO Fox in .222 and had ongoing problems with wandering zero and poor stock fit and inletting. May have been a one-off but he ditched the rifle, bitterly disappointed.

Are Tikka rifles available in France? They make a beautiful .222. I have never shot ANY Tikka rifle that did not produce jaw dropping accuracy out of the box. Superb rifles and mid-priced. I have one in .243 and would not trade it for the world.
