Lion hunt in Burkina Faso

Looking for an affordable lion hunt, done by foot. I'm only interested in a tracking hunt for a lion. I've been told Burkina would be the place to go?

Has anyone here been on a Lion hunt in Burkina Faso, and would like to share some experiences or reccomendations?

I'm from Norway, and we are allowed to import Lion from Burkina under Cites.

The other economical alternative would be a lioness in Zimbabwe, but would like to see some new country and hopefully get a male lion. I'm not fuzzy amour a mane, I'm in it for the experience more than the trophy. Will probably only keep the skull anyway.

I guess the time to do this is pretty much now and onwards a years time due to economic disturbances?

You cannot hunt in Burkina Faso at the moment for safety reasons. Maybe never again.

Bonde, as already mentioned by Grand Veneur, Burkina Faso is now out of bonds for security reasons. A really peaceful country until the early 2010's it progressively became a no-go area as armed islamic insurgents - and armed highwaymen affiliates, that operate in Mali have progressively extended their area of operations to the South into Burkina Faso and other countries of the Sahel region. In addition to the risk of being caught in frequent counter-insurgency operations, the kidnap for ransom risk is now also prevalent; four tourists (1 US, 1 Korean and 2 French) were kidnapped in May 2019 in a National Park in Northern Benin, an area neighbouring with hunting areas in Southern Burkina Faso, and rescued by French SF in Burkina Faso several days later, as the abductors were travelling back North, to Mali, with the hostages.

I don't know about the Norwegian Gov. Travel Advisory website, but check the UK and US ones in English for additional advice and, in case you would still want to travel to BF then I would advise you to buy before leaving good life/limb and KR insurance policies

I addition to Zimbabwe, you may also check lion hunting options in Cameroon, which is still a quite safe country to African standards.

But one shouldn't underestimate the risk in Cameroon. It is only a matter of time before what happens in the northern regions again.

The French SF acting in Burkina was stationed there, or flown in from France?

There are numerous French Forces operating in the Sahel Region for fighting Islamic terrorism, I can't tell where from the SF involved in the BF rescue came.

Great info from Louis.

I looked up safety concerns with traveling in Burkina Faso and found the following:

1. Burkina Faso is one of safest countries in West Africa. However, be aware of thieves in the big city. Violent assault is rare. Pickpockets and purse snatchers are something to watch out for in big cities, especially in Ouagadougou, where it is recommended not to carry a bag with you when at all possible.

2. Do not travel to Burkina Faso due to terrorism, crime, and kidnapping. Country Summary: Terrorist groups continue plotting attacks in Burkina Faso. Terrorists may conduct attacks anywhere with little or no warning.Jun 5, 2020

Interesting that Google had two opposite reports.

A friend once told another friend in response to the question of what gas mileage does it get while both admiring his new Corvette, “if you have to ask about the gas mileage, you can’t afford the car”.

Why would you want to go to an area where violence and insurrection runs rampant?

Hmmm, both my Land Cruisers get between 12 & 14 mpg. I did check before I bought them (perhaps hoping for better news). The issue has to do with range and number of times I have to take the boys in for a long drink at the gas station.

Not much hope.

I hunted in Burkina Faso for 15 years. Due to the location of the country and its neighbors I always guessed what will come soon or late.

It is not only Islamic terrorism that causes problems , but the other unrest that has arisen such as various inter-ethnic conflicts with regular massacres and either way the increase in general crime. Little or nothing is reported about it in the world press and that is the reason why hunters still think of hunting in Burkina Faso , Benin and also Cameroon where some areas in the middle and north are really no longer recommended. In the latter country, I would only recommend the forest hunting areas in the south.

For some reasons I am related to the country Burkina Faso , but if you have no relations to such countries , you shouldn't take unnecessary risks and stay away. We still have enough countries in Africa where we can hunt with relative safety. We should take advantage of these opportunities as long as it is possible , because other problems will arise sooner or later and compromise the future of the african hunting in general.

I get the picture - loud and clear.

Reason for looking into Burkina is twofold:

First - I like it off the beaten track.

Second - i do not want to, neither can I afford to blow 50-60-70 grand dollars on a hunt... there are other aspects in life than hunting, and I have a modest income. I did however spend 25’ back in 2018 and it still really really hurts. But I still want to experience a tracking Lion hunt some day. Probably settle for a lioness. They are very affordable - and give me the experience. Much the same as a tuskless hunt - a lot of bang for the buck!
