Frank Bowman, Bill Jenvey, John Dawkins
      #271755 - 16/10/15 10:29 AM

Given that Frank Ernest Bowman, Flying Officer W.M. "Bill" Jenvey and John Dawkins were all Australians and involved in African Hunting I thought that this may be the place to dredge up some information on them.

Bowman was a professional hunter how at times guided Ruark when Harry Selby was unavailable. He later retired, possibly with the closure of hunting in Kenya, and returned to Australia.

Bill Jenvey's .450/500 Holland Royal (?) was listed for sale in a London Guns (?) catalogue here in Australia in the late 70's (?).

John Dawkins hunted with Pondoro Taylor and was a pastoralist in South Australia (?).

Ruark visited Australia. Did he visit Bowman on a pastoral property ???

All good information to start with.

Does anyone have any information on these gents?.

Pondoro spent quite a few time in Australia, was it at John Dawkins' ? I am checking this. Peter Capstick. A Man Called Lion. Huntington Beach CA, Safari Press, 1994.

For the 2 other ones, I am going to check "White Hunters: The Golden Age of African Safaris" Brian Herne .
W.M. "Bill" Jenvey is depicted page 176-179
Ernest Frank Bowman is depicted page 180-182

Mate do a search on Dawkins on NE. I have previously posted a few times. Last time indicating I hoped to contact the family to see about a few things. Something I have not done.

Taylor stayed at Dawkins pastoral property in the SE of South Aust and wrote one of his books there. I believe they also hunted in the NT together. I think he visited SA a couple of times.

Would be very interested in the information you come up with and also on the other two gentlemen.

Things I have learned of Bill Jenvey.

http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=103270&an=0&page=36

Palm Beach Daily News, Friday, May 21, 1965…………..
“after facing deadly beasts in their own environment for 17 years.”

“….guided during his career …….Mr Munn and his sister Mrs Francis Kellogg…….”
“Out of this safari came the Air France Trophy for Mr Munn’s kill of a huge elephant with tusks weighing 146 and 148 pounds……….the combination trophy also was awarded for bringing down a large buffalo measuring 49 7/8” in width”……….”………..Mr Munn was also credited with a 212 pound leopard on the trip. The animal had the largest skull ever measured on a leopard killed there”

“………guided Sam Snead………In fact the hunter grinned, “I still have a number five iron given to me by Mr Snead that I have practically worn out trying some of the shots he made during spare time on the hunt”

“Jenvey moved to Africa in 1948 with his wife. The couple have three children, all born in Africa.”

“The hunter’s ability was recognized when he was placed in charge of other white hunters during the last months of filming the move “Hatari” starring John Wayne.”

http://www.gunsmagazine.com/1959issues/G0959.pdf

“The very next safari was a memorable one for, shortly after it ended, there arrive at Nairobi airport for me a relly beautiful.465 Holland and Holland double, airfreighted out by the satisfied client with whom Murray and I had just been on safari. …………..The rifle was a non-ejector. That was no inconvenience, as I found that, with practice, it was as quick to re-load as any full ejector – when both barrels had been fired.

http://www.newspapers.com/newspage/29932568/
“…….Mr Jenvey, then in his 20s, trained for two years under famed hunting guide Capt. T Murray Smith. Then he was on his own .

NitroX,

It may have been this "gifted" rifle that you have the forend off.

Being that Les O'rouke provide a picture of John Dawkins' .450 NE Rigby (cased) for Graham Wright's "Shooting the British Double Rifle" perhaps he has a source of information/contact for John Dawkins.

Is Les a member here ???

NitroX, If I read correctly you have the forend off Bill Jenvey's .465 Holland. Would you be prepared to share the story of how you came about it ??? Perhaps you know where the rest of Bill's Holland is ???

I did have the pleasure of meeeting Mr Jenvey some years ago, and I was invited to view his African book collection.
His daughter ( Kate Ferguson) is an accomplished artist in African wildlife, she has a great eye and style.
Im lucky enough to have one of her prints hanging on my wall.
Dawkins 1967 ( first edition) Rogues and Murauders is worth the read.
i also have a nice photo of him with his lever over guard, hammer double.

All nice Aussie hunting history

Best

paradox,

Where did Bill live ???

What can you tell us about him.

This might help with a bit of research.

I've got a catalogue (somewhere) where his Holland double was for sale.

It might take a dig of great proportions to find it but I'll post a picture if/when I do.

twobob

Bill was then living in an inner city southside suburb...I want to say Carina??, but dont hold me to that.
I do remember discussing the double, there was some rumour about wither it had suffered some damage or not......sorry memory is clouded.
His daughter, I think was living in rural northern NSW at the time....as earlier mentioned a talented wildlife artist in her own right

Hope this helps

Best
Eric

paradox,

A mate of mine, truck driver, was delivering something to a family in N.S.W at one time who said that they had a relative that had been a professional hunter in Africa...…..I cannot be sure that he didn't say they were Bowmans ………...maybe I'm just getting "convenient" in my memory !!!???

I will interrogate him further.

I was corresponding with Kate Ferguson a few years ago about her father's articles. She supplied me with one or two I think. Did I post them up here on NE? She was going to chase something upo for me with her father who lived elsewhere but never got back to me. I should look up the emails and see if anything can be restarted.

A bit more research on John Dawkins during a moment of curiosity that I thought I'd share with you.

Being that Bill Hambly Clark Snr had a gunstore in Adelaide and Dawkins bought his Rigby 450 double from a gunstore in Adelaide I put the question to Bill Hambly Clark Jnr as to whether Dawkins bought his double from his father’s gunstore his response was:

"I do remember John Dawkins, but only from when I was a youngster. He may have bought the double from Dad, but I have no knowledge of that.

John Taylor stayed at our house for a month or so when we lived at Norwood to finish a book - I don't know which one. I would have been in 1st year high school I recon.

Dawkins had a farming property down in the south east of South Australia, and I remember going there with Dad on a few occasions."

Yes John Taylor stayed at Dawkins SE SA farm and also wrote one of his books there.

NitroX,

I had read that Taylor stayed with Dawkins when finishing a book and they later went Buffalo shooting in the NT.

However what Bill Hambly-Clark jnr is saying is that Taylor also stayed with them in Adelaide while he was finishing a book.

Bill also said of Taylor "I remember Dad complaining he pinched all his beer. He got around Adelaide on a blue Triumph motorcycle - not a very big one from memory."

Some quite interesting insight into Taylor's visit to Australia.

Ha ha, so the phenomenon of PHs travelling around sponging off their clients, staying with them, eating their food, drinking their beer, is not new!

Only joking. I am sure the people Taylor stayed with were happy to have him as a guest.

Getting around on a Triumph motorbike. Cool. Minimalist.
