Who's going hunting in 2012?
      #198193 - 31/12/11 12:20 PM

As we close out 2011 and move on in to 2012, I was curious as to where our members plan on going hunting in the new year. Me...I have no plans yet, other than a fishing trip to Northern Canada in late July - early August.

Apart from the usual spotlighting and feral mitigation programs during winter for the local farmers .....

Hunting:

June/July: Three days for Fallow stag and freezer does, south of here which is our winter and after the rut.

August: Three forum members are joining me and two Poms in a 'Back to Boulia' 7 day slay fest for more Camels and feral pigs.

Organise a self guided scrub bull hunt in the NT for 2013. I'm happy to pay for access and trophy fees if required.

Rifles:

I plan to put a Lothar walther 8x57 'in the white' away for future use. Cameron wants a sporter built in this calibre. I need a Mauser '98 bolt body as well to fit a spare action.

Get ring bases fitted to my .250-3000, the bolt handle straightened and the barrel re-crowned.

Keep chasing TSE to get the button to make a .333 Jeffrey barrel for a .333OKH (eventually).

For 2012 for me it may well be a busy year. 2012 and even 2011 has been a bit of a drought except for local small game hunting. In 2011 I missed out on doing a trip I really wanted to do, but did get to visit Gryphon and accept his invitation of a couple of days sambar hunting.

2012

Will be visiting Scandinavia again in October and if everything goes right hunting in Norway and Sweden with a couple of NE friends and hopefully another couple of NE friends will be there as well. The communal team hunting there is something different to what I am used to.

While there hope to visit some friends living in that part of the world as well.

May visit France and may take up a boar hunting invitation. anyway hope to visit one of our NE friends at least. However it needs to be fitted in somehow.

In France hope to visit the Verney-Carron 'factory' and meet Jean Verney-Carron. Verney-Carron is France's oldest gunmaker so a lot of history based there.

Hope to get to the Heym 'factory' as well in Germany. Needs to be fitted in. While in Scandinavia hope to visit Norma too.

Too many things to do, not enough time, too much time away from home in one go, so I will see, what fits in.

Back to the hunting. I bought a tahr hunt in NZ at an SCI auction earlier this year. However I need to be far fitter so need a twelve month schedule of work outs. I am not interested in taking up "particular" sorts of "hunts", otherwise I will not do it. Aiming for December.

I hope to investigate a property in SE of SA for deer hunting. And another in the Mid-North. March to July.

Haven't been goat shooting in years. Hopefully can re-gain access to an old property or two. Maybe go for at least a long weekend (or mid-week seeing I am flexible) goat hunt. Would be good to re-visit old haunts. Winter sometime.

Would really LOVE to get onto some wild pork on Kangaroo Island again. And fill an esky and engel with wild pork. KI boar are pretty much clean of disease so can be readily eaten. Maybe Autumn.

I missed out on visiting the NT in 2011 as I half planned. I wanted to hunt water buffalo, boar and waterfowl. Had a good offer in Arnhemland, which has been deferred to 2012. Going to be hard to fit it in, unless I work like a demon in between especially if I drive up, not fly.

Plus the usual hunting. Duck season opening in February, and maybe an extra away duck hunt or two on the swamps. Should be a good year with all the rain and water so the ducks should have bred up. Plus the usual ducks on local creeks. As long as they are flowing earlier enough for duck season. Often in recent years we have been getting later rains, so the creeks are not flowing until the season has finished. So the ducks stay away until they flow.

At least one pheasant shoot is planned in July. Maybe try for a second one as well.

The usual rabbit, hare, fox and pigeon shooting at home and nearby. Been seeing good numbers of quail in some of the paddocks and also vineyards when driving around at night. Hopefully they will still be around in a few months time! Great if they are. Haven't shot quail in decades. February to June.

Want to hunt in Africa again and should do some planning for 2013 or 2014. Otherwise maybe Alaska.

On the firearms front, lots of guns to work on.

The Mauser M03, four barrels and cartridges to build loads for. But is was blooded (the .222 barrel) this week on five fallow deer put into the freezer - escapees from my deer farm.

The Westley Richards 10-bore to get shooting.

Another DR to get shooting, not mentioned yet.

The Steyr 6.5x53R and Mannlicher 6.5x54 to get shooting in some form.

On the repairs or custom work front. Some minor repairs to the .450 Jeffery. Some barrel fitting to the Tikka DR extra barrel sets. If they go on, gives me three new rifle barrels to develop loads for. (groan!) Maybe get some work started on the Mannlicher 6.5x54 if it measures up to be worth it.

Lots and lots of reloading to do. Have depleted almost all my ammo. Need to re-set up a reloading room, as the old setup have been scattered and become disorganised. Need to reload, test and build supplies of the old ones, as well as new ones.

Hope to do some BGRC shoots in 2012 as well.

Lots to do, won't do it all!

Somewhere in that all I am going to have to work the farm and vineyard and even worse find a part time paying job or do some contract or consultancy work.

FMD, even if I had the cash I doubt the handbrake would give me a leave pass to do all that. I look forward to the hunt (and ballistics) reports.

Mouflan sheep in Hawaii in 17 days, Aoudad sheep in West Texas in April, whitetails here at home in Oct,Nov, and Dec. Trying to get a mountain lion hunt set up as well. Going to hold off of Africa this year as I still have taxidermy trickeling in from the last two safaris. I always try to do a trout fishing trip each year in the mountain west and some type of winter cull/meat hunt in Texas.
Happy New Year to you all and good hunting.

I'm hopeful to get to Zimbabwe this year for Buffalo & Sable. A Zebra as well but have yet to decide on any others. Just got to sell my boat to fund the trip.
Sambar are always nearby so will pay them a few visit's too.
Good luck to you all in 2012.

Just got back. Got a couple of Buff, had a couple of good hunts including with someone where we chased / tracked / stalked the Buff for a few kms from initially seeing them (where he couldn't get a clear shot).

Eventually caught up with really fresh tracks and I said to change direction, head more into the bush and they were about 100 yards in. He whacked a good cow from over 120 yards off hand.

All in all a good 2 weeks.

Now to plan the rest of the year !

More pigs and likely Cape Buffalo or Bull Elephant or posibly both. Or maybe three non trophy Elephant or double Buffalo??? Still working on it.
Venues could be Mozambique, Zimbabwe or Uganda.

John

Haven't even down loaded the photos yet.

But talk about wet.

It's taken 10 years but I managed to connect with a cyclone (managed to miss the last big one, Monica a few years ago by 2 weeks) but this one, the eye passing right over us at midday - very eerie feeling indeed, dead calm, eye had filled in with a light white mist which descended onto us as a light misty rain.

It was a Cat 1 by the time it passed us thank god.

Down south got alot of rain as you probably saw on the news with the railway derailment, bridges knocked out etc. 14 inches of rain in 24 hours !!!

Ozhunter

Are you up to date on what is happening in Mozambique? ie re the licence fees increases and where and how they apply?

Perhaps a new thread on Mozambique if you are aware on what is happening there? If not, not a problem.

Lucky guy if you get onto a handfull of cape buffalo and/or elephant.

Good to see some photos of the Wet Season. Always wanted to get up there during the Wet for a short while to see what it is like. I'm sure any hunting is sticky indeed.

John

If the monsoon trough comes down towards the coast (see the line on the BOM Chart), then it tends to get a bit cloudy which is good as it keeps the heat / temp down and you get a bit of a blow and some rain.

If not (ie the monsoon trough heads north like it is today), you get clear skies and it is normally bloody hot.

The 4 weeks prior to Xmas day were clear, very hot and dry (ie only the usual afternoon thunderstorms).

Either way it is damn hot and humid, almost too hot to do anything during the day.

Also too wet to go fishing in billabongs as you can't get to them.

Well I certainly hope 2012 is better than the lean year 2011 was! So far here are my plans:

Apr: Red stag QLD & Fallow NSW

Aug: Rusa maybe hopefully....

Aug-Nov: Buffalo, Scrubbers and Boars

Nov: Chamois and Tahr in NZ

Will have my 7mm SAUM mountain rifle finished and the Echols stock put onto my 404 and the new mag box too. If I can get another LH Model 70 G series I will start to looking to gather the parts for a partner to my 404.

Good luck to everyone hope its a productive 2012 for all.

Regards,

MOG
