Does this lion look too 'clean' where are the scars?
      #153045 - 07/02/10 07:01 AM

Though I have only travelled to Africa and India via just about every doco ever made and have only seen lions up close in drive through parks and zoo`s just about every single lion ever filmed shows off numerous scar`s and marks all over them so I ask 'why is this lion so clean'? It looks to be almost a product of a modelling dept of some magazine shoot.

Is it a product of one of the lion farms?

My first inclination is that it's not a game farm bred animal, because the hunter's shirt says Tanzania, and I don't believe Tanzania has a reputation for breeding captive lions. There appears to be a scar on the bridge of the nose, and also on the right side of his cheek. Also, IIRC, I believe I read that lions that don't live in heavy thorn bush country don't get cut up and scarred as much as those who do. Just my $.02.

This lion has no visible scars, and I can guarantee it was not farm raised.

gryppon, here is another lion that has very little scars in he face, but was totally wild. the rason i think, was that the density of males that could challenge him in the area where relatively low, and there is few thorn bushes. The male in your photo looks slightly young, so less scars anyway.

Agreed---incredible lion---great job..

As for the others, not so sure the scaring is a tell tale sign as, from what I have seen, is that on many pen raised lion there is considerably more "body hair" -- see it along the bottom of the belly and flanks you normally do not see as often on a wild lion...the bush typically takes care of that on wild lion...take a look at many posted that were hunted in South Africa..pretty obvious, IMHO...
