OK. I know this question has been asked ad nauseum. But, I would like to downsize my rifle collection. Starting with a 22RF, what would you choose as the perfect worldwide hunting five rifle battery?

17HMR - can do anything a 22 can do and better

30.06 - wide bullet range

375H&H

12 Gauge (prompted by post below !)

.22 LR {cheap and available}

6.5x55 {99% of anything that can be killed can be killed with this, fast}

.375 H&H Magnum {just because I like it and it's a common legal minimum for your African DG}

You don't need the last two. Spend the money you save on them for ammo for the above three and PRACTICE!

For australia, i can only think of 4 that are certain.

.22 LR (just the cheapness and availability as mentioned. Is sort of the standard)

.223 Remington (Heaps of ex-military ammo, will never die out)

.308 Winchester (reason as .223 Remington, just that its bigger and more suitable for pigs and allowed to be used on deer, for people in the states i guess .30-06 is a good option)

12 gauge shotgun (when one projectile isn't enough)


The last gun choice would be purely on where you do most of your shooting. For northern Territory I would pick a big bore either .375 H&H or 9.3x74R in a double rifle although the latter is not that popular over here its very popular in Europe so is 8x68S which is also another good large cartridge.

The rest of australia, probably a cartridge in between .22 LR and the .223 Remington. Something like a .22 Hornet, .218 Bee, .17 Remington, maybe even .17 HMR.

For my country and the game available:

.243 for small game,cheetal etc.
.270 for ibex,horned sheep
7mm.mag.for nilgai,wild boar(big mean mothers)
375 H&H MAG.for Africa
416 Rigby for big game,elephant,rhino etc.

Yeah, but it's always fun to think about it. I can't include a rimfire if I'm limited to five.
.223 for varmints and predator calling
.243 for long range predator calling and light game
.30-06 for backup on everything else.
.375 H&H as main big game rifle
.458 for dangerous game.
And my 12 gauge...alright so I have six listed.

22 rimfire--as stated--cheap to shoot
220 Swift for varmints, small game--anthing up to and through deer and still the ultimate p-dog gun
300 or 338 Win mag--for larger plains game, elk, moose, etc..
375 H&H or 416 for Africa--personally I would take the 416--
12 gauge shotgun--needed to hunt pheasants, ducks, etc..

I have used the 300 and 416 battery on several trips to Africa and have been very, very pleased--in fact my next trip I plan to take 3-excessive I know--but I plan to take a 338, 416 and 470 Nitro--some might say why?? because I can...

I would choose the following for world wide game but for country specific I would change maybe one or two .

.22 rimfire (cheap and for the pot)
6.5X54 or 55 (flat shooting and light)
8X57 ( good range of medium to heavy bullets; deer to large thin skin game)
.375 H&H (no question about all around) or .404 Jeffrey (the .404 only because it is what it is!)
20 gauge sxs cyl / cyl

Bit disappointed that one of the all time great has been overlooked, anyway here my 2 bob

22 mag (economical, useful for animals up to meat goats size)
6.5 x 55 (wonderfully accurate, devastating with 155gr megas on all OZ game, Bovines excluded)
9.3 x 62 (can take anything, can be shot all day without developing flinchitis)
Marlin 30/30 (for when a quick action is needed, Boars)
470NE (sounds like a good idea)

I would like to thank you all for your inputs and suggestions. After reading the above twelve replies, I have to renege on my original question. I don't think I could limit myself to five hunting rifles. So, here's what I came up with:

22RF- small game/pests
220 Swift- varmint hunting
257 Weatherby- antelope, etc.
7mm Rem. mag- elk. etc.
30-06- backup for all above
9.3X64- backup for two below (where legal)
375 H&H- neavy game
416 Taylor-DG

IMHO, every shooter/hunter needs a good quality 22, 30-06 and 12 guage. Please understand, my initial question was serious. But, it is fun and interesting to ponder this question- probably as long as there are hunters and gun owners. It is also interesting how most of your suggestions were the old established cartridges.Your thoughts?

I was reading the post here and all of a sudden realized that I've spent the last 30 or so years trying to give your question the ultimate answer. Here it goes:

22 hornet - Brno Fox (22RF is not legal for hunting in Portugal)
7mmRM - Kiplauf Hubertus Krieghof
9,3X74R - CCS 25 double FN Browning
375HH - Dakota
470NE - Krieghof Classic double

I don't remember the last time I felt the need of another gun, let alone pure lust.
For sentimental reasons I still keep my first rifle a very worn 30-06 BSA.
Besides these I have used 22RF, 243, 270, 300WM, 9,3x62 and 45-70.
Should I have to keep only one rifle I would get another 9,3x62.

Shotguns will go another day.

My gun safe holds 8 long guns so if I can reneg and limit it to that, to my original post I would add a .243, a good lever action (either a Win mod. 94 in .30/30 or Marlin Cowboy action shooter in .45/70) and a Butch Searcy PH model in .500 NE.

My response was to sort of go the other way and really force myself to consider NEED {not including shotguns since rifles were specified and not including a specialized small-varmint rifle since I made my list up thinking in terms of game animals}.

Having rethought the question, I would be quite satisfied with the same list, adding only a shotgun for shotgun-only required big game hunting areas and a .223 for small varmints.

So there is the Five I suppose.

Truthfully, though, for all big game hunting anywhere in the world, excluding dangerous game, I could get along quite nicely with just the 6.5x55.

Enjoyed reading the responses thus far and having given it some thought many times in my life time. I have the following observations, if at all possible stick with the same action in everyting, except perhaps the 22lr and the shot gun. in my case and if I had to, I could live with 4 guns, 2 Mauser bolt action rifles in 6mm Rem, 300 WM., a 16 gau. on a Mauser 98 and a 22 lr either bolt or semi-auto. The versatility of the loads available for the 6mm & .300 and the overlapping game sizes vs availale loads pretty well covers anything one might hunt anywhere. Having said all that I will keep all my babies as long as I can. A list follows 22LR, 22-250, 220 Swift, 6mm REM, 7x57, 32.20, 303 British, 300 WM, 38.55 and "several" shotguns. --- John303

Maybe I am too practical but I think this list offers the most bang for the buck. Even given the recently high Winchester prices, one could probably get totally set up with scopes, a boatload of ammo and everything below for well under $10K.

.22 LR...Kimber Classic
One can buy 5000 rounds for around $100...tough to argue with that.

.308 Win...Kimber Classic
Cheap to shoot with universally available 147 grain mil. surp. ammo. One can use 110 grain bullets for varmints or 200 grainers for bigger stuff.

.416 Rem...Win Model 70
Just make brass from .375H&H if you have to. Use 400 grain solids for the big stuff and cheap 350 grain hard cast bullets for larger plains game.

12 guage...Rem 870
This gun is durable, offers ubiquitous spare parts and cheap ammo for birds. Use slugs in the thick stuff for deer sized game. Cut it off at the end of the mag tube for a defensive weapon.

8 bore...front stuffer
For use when the .416 feels small. Use on the largest African game, cast your own bullets or round balls and make your own black powder in a pinch. Keep a minimum stash of 1000 musket caps.

The only weapon I would add to this list for any "practical" reason would be a 9mm Browning hi-power.

I have sold all of my long guns with the exception of a "battery". I have kept the following for hunting purposes, and they are all that I need:

.222 Remington 40x
.270 Sako Finnlight 75
.338 HS Precision takedown
.458 Beretta double rifle
12 ga. William Evans

I have found that from varmits to mountain sheep to plains game and dangerous game, I always have an adequate hunting weapon. Another opinion, everyone has one .

My position is that you could hunt the world and anything as small as gophers with a 416 or 375 H&H. I prefer the 416, but both are big enough for anything, shoot flat enough out to two hundred yards, and neither really tares up meat upon impact due to their relatively slow moving slugs. You could also probably kill anything with a 300 weatherby if you were a good enough shot and didn't mind meat damage on the small stuff (some legal issues on DG in some African countries). From my perspective however, I will always go with more gun than is necessary and a bullet that is heavier as opposed to faster. A good 416 remy with a 1.5X 5 scope could hunt the planet.

Didn't even think about shot guns... discard the smallest cals on the two lists and throw in a 20 or 12 gauge silver pigeon 2.

Africa1, would love to see some pictures and read about your Beretta 458 double some time. I am extremely fond of the Beretta doubles but haven't heard from anyone that owns one.

My choice- for hunting
.22lr
.375 H&H
12gauge (what else are you going to use on ducks etc.)
Outside Australia I would include a .416 Rigby, preferrably in double rifle.

For fun I'd add a lever gun in 357mag. and long range plinking, because ammo is cheep, an accurate .223
Just realised that is six, so I'll lose the .223

mine would be something like this.

22 lr win 9422
9,3 x 74 dbl rifle
338 lapua long range bolt rifle
20/577 alex henry dbl rifle
12 gauge shot and ball gun for all the rest

got all but the 338 lapua, it will come at one point or another.

I must answer with the 5 best "flexible" ranging calibers similar to those I really use--

22RF-plinking( I like the 17 calibers)
22-250-varmints( I use 223 to 243 to 25.06)
30.06-deer size critters(In reality I use from 7mm08 to 300 Mag)
375 H&H Mag-elk,moose & bigger(I use 338 to 35 Whelen to 416 to 458WM)
12 gauge Shotty for all the rest

Guess I have to many guns!!

222 - Tikka LSA 55
7mm08 Kimber Montana for the dense New Zealand bush
280 Ackley Improved Sako Finbear - for open country, mountain & plains game
9.3X62 Simson for larger game (not hunted with it yet)
One day I will own a 375, a 10.75X68 & a double rifle in 450 or 470.

Here are my picks

.17 Remington- 30gr bullets at 3750-3800. Great for blasting through 1/4" steel plate or smashing P.dogs.

6.5x284- Flat out to 1000 yards (25minutes) and super accurate. Great bullets.

338 Lap mag- 300gr bullets. Good to a mile:)))

9.3x74R- Reinforced frame, sidelock with kickers, smoking hot stick of lumber.

577 BPE- 90/650 load good for anything on planet earth.

.22 WMR (40 grain powerpoint)
.223 Rem (55 grain soft point)
.308 Win (150 grain soft point)

If this is a "worldwide" battery you have to be aware of both calibres are readily available and what are actually prohibited in certain countries. For that reason ALL military calibres, .223; .308; .30-06 6.5mm Swedish (6.5x55), 7mm Mauser must be discounted. As must ANY rimfire apart from standard .22LR and any relatively "exotic" cartidges such as 7mm-08.

So a .22LR ir is.

That really leaves next only the .270, love it or loathe it. It's available, legal and will hande up to 150 grain bullets in FACTORY ammunition.

A 12 bore, again being aware that some countries prohibit multi-shot guns is next. The simplest probably a Greener's GP Gun. It offers rifle like accuracy, is robust, esily repaired and gives a fast rate of fire.

In the middle calibre it would have to be .375 Holland. Although this is perhaps not as common as it once was.

For the larger calibre, again love or loathe it, it would have to be either .458 Winchester or .416 Rigby. The .416 is more flexible, and probably performs better.

So that's my choice. .22LR; .270; .375; .416; 12 Bore. Not exciting, very "conservative" but I'll at least be able to find ammunition when you are still wasting petrol driving from shop to shop to be told "Not sold here, sorry".

I'll add my $.02 worth. For my cottage / lake / bush / truck battery, I put together the following switch barrel rig on an H & R Handi-rifle frame.

22LR - something like a Cooper or really good Anschutz
6.5x47 Lapua - custom rifle with BAT 3-lug action, jewell trigger, krieger barrel and McMillan stock
8x68S - Win/Mauser custom controlled round feed action
.375 H&H or 9.3x62 - Win/Mauser custom controlled round feed action
.500NE DR - WR, H&H or classic Rigby
or .458 Lott - Heym Express action (nice and heavy to shoot 550gr at NE speeds)
or .425 Express - Win/Mauser custom controlled round feed action (to shoot 450gr at NE speeds)

Having said that, I'm not sure I could live without a .303 and 9.3x74 falling block though (really really really want a Hagn take down set with those barrels)

... or a .450/.400 NE....

... or a 12 bore....

Am I alowed 6/7 plus a shotty?

If you get a rifle with multiple barrels, does that count?!

Oh - and I forgot a muzzleloader.........

Love this topic. For me, there's lots of "ifs, buts, & maybes ...", so here's my list/s:

What i really like:
17HMR
20cal wildcat (eg; 204 reamed chamber to 223 length)
300WSM ('cause I've got one & love it - can be loaded from mild 308 to near 300WinMag)
9.3x74R double
450 x 3 1/4" double

If practicality is an issue (ie ammo availability, legalities, etc):
22LR high quality bolt, or a Ruger 10/22
223Rem bolt (or, if necessary substitute 222Rem or 22-250)
308Win or 30-06 bolt or single (if necessary, substitute 270Win)
375H&H bolt
470NE double

This list, of course, completely discounts bird guns. One simply must have a bird gun (for me a high quality SxS game gun in 20 or 12 bore - maybe even 28), & a well fitted O/U 12 bore clays gun.

I could live the rest of my days in bliss if I could travel the world & each year have cause to use all the arms in one or the other list (& the shotguns).

Not greedy at all, am I?!

22 LR CZ 452 FS: pretty little thing

308W Kimber Montana: not a favorite round but practical

7RM M70: you need a little reach on rare occaisions

350RM Rem. 600: so versatile and easy to tote

450/400 Double: if first hunt requiring more than the .350RM is in a suitable climate
or since balistics are so close, and the double just gets abused or I just do not look as "classic" with the bolt for future hunt.
416 Aagard on M70 with syn. stock: if in wet country

Basically what other posters are saying. I went back and forth between the 30-06,.303 British (my favorites) 7x57 mm, 6.5mm Swedish and the .270. It's my understanding that the .270 is more common internationally plus it isn't a military caliber. Which is illegal in many countries. So there it is.
The .416 is as high as I care to go on the recoil scale and it's fairly common in this day and age. I've heard too many bad things about the .458 Winchester. My two cents.

This was really tough, because I am currently downsizing a bit myself. From a purely cartridge point of view, with no regard for your current inventory, my choices would be
.22 LR- not a semi do to some local restrictions
12 gauge- a break action, again because of legalities
.270- the world's preeminent open country round, not restricted due to military use, it is used &
available everywhere
.338 Win.- the ultimate N. American safari cartridge, accurate & reasonably kind to the shoulder
.404 Jefferys- simply because it's a .404 J
