John,

Advance congratulations as we wait for the pictures. That is a gorgeous piece of wood and the rifle should be a magnificent beauty now!

Took the .30-06 for a walk in the last two weeks, for sambar with Gryphon, it used to be my main hunting rifle for virtually everything.

Been using my "cowboy" BLR in .308 a lot recently instead as the .30-06 did not have a scope on it. Ordered a set of Conetrol mounts for it and had a Schmidt and Bender 4x scope set aside for it, but when the Conetrol mounts arrived, they were missing one base, and also the rings were too low for the bolt to clear the scope ...

Sort of got put aside for a while, too long, but with the need for a sambar rifle, the old Hillver Bridge mounts and 4x Weaver got put back on, and re-sighted in, in the dark before driving over to Melbourne over night on Saturday to arrive at the SHOT Show on Sunday morning.

Still shoots wonderfully, the last two 200 gr Nosler Partition Semi-pointed printed maybe a half inch apart at a 100 yards. Not bad for shooting in the dark with a torch illuminating the target!

Did not get to fire a shot in anger at sambar, but did see a couple which isn't too bad. Gryphon donated to me a nice backstrap from the hind he shot for meat, so I will be dining on sambar this month!

A bipod on the barrel will affect the point of aim and/or accuracy.

On the forend also allows a sling to be used for off hand shooting to steady the shot as well.

John, I have played with the concept of using a sling for steadying the rifle mounted with the barrel band stud.
I found that with the sling held to the fore end with a good grip and a bit of slack ahead of the hand I could hold it tight enough to easily give a hasty sling help to getting a steadier shot off.
The other good thing is that it is not determined by the sling length as is the usual fore end mounted sling stud as with a longer sling length to have the rifle ride lower ion the shoulder you can simply grip the sling further back and bring it forward to the forend till there is enough tension round the off side upper arm to give the steadying effect.

Looking forward to seeing the rifle as the blank shows excellent promise. Any decission on the other blank you got. You do know that you will have to do a 318WR soooner or later so you may as well do it now if the second blank is aas good as you indicated.

I didn't post them as I wasn't happy with the look of the scope and mounts. The original Hilver Steel bridge mounts and a 4x Weaver steel scope. Both work fine however.

Though have used it on a few hunts that way including the recent sambar trip with Gryph. Had to put all the old stuff back on for the hunt.

Had a set of Conetrol mounts sent over, but they didn't work out as the rings were too low for the bolt, and they only sent one base not the two ordered!

Got a couple sets of Warne QD mounts on hand now instead. Only very recently.

The next problem is the 4x Swarovski scope (bought second hand) may not have a tube long and too short eye relief ... will see this weekend.

I never took photos as haven't been happy with the final look, but could have taken "progress" photos I guess ...

Hmmm not sure quite what the problem with a Monte carlo stock is. Although I think losing the white line spacers would be good. here is a P-H 1200 Super straight out of the box still with hang tag:-

Then fitted out:-

Scope is a Leupold Vari X 111 of 2.3-8 vaiiable in Leupld Q/T lever op mounts. The rifle is a ot catalogued special order and chambered for 7.92mm

The inletting was very poor so it has been re-bedded by a real gunsmith and checked with Privi Partisen 196 grn ammunition and shoots around MOA with it. Now a different version of the P-H Monte carlo stock:-

The original factory finish hid this figuring. This one is a .308 1100 Lwt.

Now the question is what happened to the origina P-H stock.. If you look under the butt pad or possible in the barrel channel if it's not been attacked a by a free floating advocate it will bear the mark SILE as that is who supplied P-H and also the late BSA stocks.

Parker Hale - our first CF here in Aust in 22.250.

Huge action, small round, whispy barrel, 2 foot flame out the end that killed all night vision.

But they were very popular.

Our one came from the Eley factory here in Aus, it was used as a "test" gun or something - it used to be in the cabinet with a few others, most of which I or my father ended up with.

Greener 12G shotgun, Webley & Scott 20 bore, Anschutz .22 Rifle being a few others.

I never liked the Parker Hale and it put me off 22.250 and Parker Hale's for ever.

Actually fitted the new mounts and scope last week, plus a handfull of other scopes, to the Tikka double and also the Mauser M03. Had the camera out but too dark outside when finished. Will do it, but most of my daylight hours are getting used up at the moment with more mundane stuff ...

"I've a confession to make ... the pics took too long, but here they now are."

These two photos could be redone without the bags I think.

Still need to find the open sights and put them back onto the rifle.

Basically a simple re-modelling of a Parker Hale 1200 Delux. Replacement of the stock from a blank supplied by Roger Vardy. Stockwork by Ross Waghorn, including the buffalo horn forend. Some metal work ie replacement of the bolt handle by Bob De Vries.

The barrel could do with a clean up and re-blueing one day.

And Blitzen was very excited by the photo session.

Hi John,

That looks really 'Spiffy' the grain is lovely and you can't beat Ross Waghorn for stock making and Rodger Vardy for blanks.

I had a 1200 Deluxe in .243 but it had that confounded 'Gloss' finish which spoilt it in my eyes.

Cheers,

Jeff Gray
