Decent article. Some really wild claims, of course, but sometimes that is how people remember lucky shots.
I had a .25/06 for a while - cheap model Ruger with the plastic trigger guard. Can't remember the model. First load tested put 5 into .625".
Got bored with it and sold it at the next Rod and Gun Gun show. I might still have the dies, though. I once had a .257 Robert's Improved.
Now THAT was an impressive round with a Shilen barrel on a 98 Mauser.
The .25/06 has quite the boiler room for a small bore.

I've reloaded for a couple friends who have them..yes, lots of boiler room ..

Have always prefered the .257Weatherby ..not in a Weatherby rifle, as I am not a fan..have tried many..just not for me as to fit and accuracy.. but the cartridge kicks ass..

Have taken many antelope,, mule deer, coyotes, etc with that caliber.. 100gr Barnes TSX at 3670fps.. they never know what hit them..

I met a guide in RSA that used his 25-06 for all plains game and seemed pleased with it.

I was shooting my Ruger 77 .338 and was also pleased.

Hi Daryl i owned that rifle for a couple of years
I restocked it and had Don Robinson set the barrel back and
chamber it to 257 AI
I gave it to a friend in Williams Lake
It s still his favorite deer rifle

Yes - I recall that I sold it to you, sydney. IIRC, it had a 26" bl.? with a fairly good shank before the taper.
3,199fps with 120gr. Hornady HP's and just over 3,480fps with 100gr. Noslers.
Impressive. That was back when we had a 300meter berm. Keith was with me one day I shot a 1.99", 5 shot group at 300 meters with it using the 120gr. Hornadys.
Some .257's are interesting.
I always felt the .25/06 case was a little too big for the calibre.

Another boring space filler article. And has to mention the 2022 wannabe yet again. How boring!

What happened to articles discussing a cartridge, it's attributes, the rifle and then actually hunting with it !

Instead of endless armchair stuff and hot air .... Like the BS wolf story ... Fiction .....

BTW I chose the 6.5 over .25s and .243s as an Aussie choice. If 160 grs were legal for sambar, it would be a perfect alrounder below bovines.

Our only big game calibre restrictions are on bison. 175gr. bullet and 2000joules at 100 meters.
.270 doesn't make it, unless sporting pointy 175 to 180gr. bullets.

Frankly I find this no more boring than the countless posts of the horrors of the CM.. We get it.. not your jam.. but jeeze .. get over it.. No one is going to use the old outdated cartridge to the level of the CM.. No matter how much sand you try to kick ..

Looking at the number of views, this article has received double the views of the worthless info on other 6.5's that has been recycled now for the past 5 years..

The point is everyone one of these "authors" has to mention a cartridge which hasnt done anything new since 1890. It's really quite boring.

No one would ever buy a .25-06 again? I doubt that is true at all.

I'm not partial to a .25 at all. But the .257 Roberts is a classic. Some still like the .250-3000. I'd buy a SMLE in .25/303. And an old lever in .25/20.

I've a friend wanting to build up a bolt right in .250 Savage. I suggested the .257/3000 Ackley Improved.
I easily duplicates the standard .257 Roberts in a good bolt gun with modern ammo.
.25/303 should be equal to the .257 Roberts, seems to me, if it's on a #4 or Siamese Mauser.

G'Day Fella's,

As mentioned above, the .25-06 is an impressive performer, but it does have limitations as well!
I presently own two of them, and have owned the Rem 700, since the early 1980's.
It's barrel has been on the way out, for some time now, hence the Kimber Montana.
I have a new MADDCO, 26" barrel for the Rem 700, but like Ripp, it will be in .257 W/by.

I had a .25/0-6 for a while, in the low-priced guise of the Ruger, I think it was called. About $550.00. Seems to me, I got $500.00 for it.
It was accurate and shot 1/2" to .5/8" with every bullet from 75gr. Hornady HP's to 120gr. Speers.
It was boring and had a horrific trigger, hence I sold it. I did prefer my .257Roberts Imp. Mauser, 26". I got 3,482fps with 100gr. Noslers with it.

On the other hand, the 6.5/06 is a hell of a ctg., but harder on the barrel than a .270 Win. All 3 are hard on the throat.

I own one. I made it for a good friend years ago and when he was dying he gave it back to me. So it's a keepsake for me and I'll never sell it. I have killed a bunch of deer and antelope with it, and Bob killed a whole lot more of them before I got it back from him. A few kills with Remington 100 grain bullets and 2 with Speer 120 grain bullets didn't have exit wounds. But when used with 117 and 120 grain bullets of better construction I have dropped all my game and all have had through and through wounds with good sized exit holes.

Like many big game rifles with smaller bores, it benefits from well made bullets with thicker jackets and/or bonded construction. If good bullets are used I see nothing to gripe about with it, and it's very accurate. Swift, Nosler Partitions and all the bonded bullets all seem to give you it's full potential.

As was aid above it's one of about 1000 shells that work well.

If used with bullets that hold together its fine for all the uses I'd put it to. I will not hunt elk or moose with it because I don't have a reason to. I have rifles that shoot larger heavier bullets from .264 bore up to .423 bore, so there is nothing I feel I need to prove by hunting game about the 300 pound range with my 25-06.
Would it work for larger game? I am sure it would if everything was good for the shot. I know that because when I was a boy I worked at a slaughter house and we killed cattle with a 22 LR for a while. Later they start3ed using a 30 carbine and still later a kill hammer that took 38 cal blank shells.
But if I can (and I have) killed cows of 1400 pounds to 1800 pounds with a 22LR I am sure I can kill any land animal with a 25-06 if I can get the correct angle, including elephants. I know a few elephants have also been killed with a 22LR, but to me that don't prove anything we don't know already.

Overall I like the 25-06 and I have no complaints, but I also don't try to prove any points with it. I use it on game from 100 pounds up to about 300 pounds and if I know the game is (or may be) larger I grab a larger bore rifle.

I have a 6.5-06 on a 98 action and 24 in barrel. having been a 270 fan for decades, I see no practical difference between the two. I would suppose on game larger than deer or antelope it might show a slight edge over the 25-06.

I have a 25.05 and have used it on hares, foxes, dogs, pigs and deer. I run 117grain pills in it.

I originally bought it as a spotlighting gun but liked it so much I use it for most of my hunting. Point and shoot, simples.

An 800 yard shot on a wolf is pure fluke, nothing more.
