Well....it would appear I have some egg on my face. Since my first post in this thread I have learned that I was familiar with this cartridge several years ago as it was essentially developed by a friend of mine. With a few tweaks and, obviously pressure development, Hornady introduced a "new to the general public" cartridge. The back story is MUCH more interesting than the Hornady marketing, the idea was genius.

It all started, from my recognition with the info listed below.. You friends with George??

https://thebiggamehuntingblog.com/6-5-prc/

I actually really like the 6.5 PRC.. maybe more so like the rifle I have that its chambered in..stupid accurate...

I never heard of "George." The 7mm PRC, is it not based off the 375 Ruger, which is essentially a beltless 375 H&H? My friend developed an entire line of cartridges based on that case, shortened to 57mm. Hornady made the dies.

The .375 Ruger has a .532" base diameter, which measurement is shared with the .30, 7mm and 6.5mm PRC ctgs., thus, they are based on the pre-existing .375 Ruger case.

The belt diameter of the standard magnum cases, is .532". The head diameter is a mere .513" give or take a thousandth of an inch.

PRC and .375 as well as .416 Ruger brass can be made from magnum brass, by merely trimming the case length appropriately, then necking
to the correct bullet diameter, making the shoulder in the appropriate location for headspacing and fireforming the case. The case body ahead
of the belt will blow out to .532", conforming to the PRC or Ruger chamber.
Note, inside neck reaming might be necessary, especially for the 6.5, 7mm and .30 cal. chambers.
This same method was used by me to form 6.5 & 9.5x68 cases. I turned the belts to .522", trimmed and necked the cases and fireformed.

I read the article and its just another marketing play to try and sell guns and ammo. I don't object to that but what I do object to is this, (from the article) "Want to shoot an elk at 900 yards with a medium recoil rifle that you can easily carry around with, well then a 7mm PRC chambered rifle is the way to go!" Shooting at any animal at that range is just not right, disrespectful of the animal and being a skilled hunter. And on top of that IF you hit the Elk it is sure luck. The chances of not getting a clean hit and kill is way way low. He could have just said it was a good Elk cartridge and left it at that.

I thought the same..Its become very obnoxious to hop on hunting sites and every single one in the first line or two has DISTANCE the animal was taken at.. Like it adds size to your manhood..

Took my son out this weekend.. he is 10.. first tag for him really in Montana.. YOUTH HUNT , special program.. He took a very nice older buck at about 90 yards.. He was super happy, telling me after it was over that he had "the shakes".. I could not have been more proud of him... I told him to HOLD ON TO THAT FEELING..

900 yards……..and how many Elk get merely wounded and run off to die later? Takes quite awhile to cover 900 yards (often uphill or across a drainage) for an average guy to get to where that animal was shot.

Quick story: I have some friends/acquaintances that are late 20's to early 30's that are all about long range shooting and "hunting" (spit). A year ago (2021 season) they were out after Black Bear with various highly touted 6.5's and a .300 "big boomer express" & all with the latest turret BDC scopes. Shots taken at 700-900 yards (laser ranged).
End of "hunt" result? 3 separate bears hit, knocked down, and then up & ran off…..never to be seen again. These guys had no remorse…..just ghoulish and disrespectful if you ask me.

Another note: While setting up and readying for that 900 yard shot, is anyone even considering that there just might be another hunter 400 yards uphill, properly stalking that animal, and is quite in the field of fire? Around my parts there is plenty of oak brush that is 4-5 feet tall which provides good cover for a stalk…..also camouflages said hunter from being spotted by the "900 yard" Bwana.

OK, rant concluded,
- Mike

ADDED: Ripp, your son did well.

That is why I discontinued Wild TV channel, after a week of seeing too many 900 to 1,000 elk shots.

'Course, they only showed film of the ones that drop at the shot, in the open and there was always a huge ditch between the shooter and the elk across the valley.

Well done to you Ripp & your young fella!
No wonder he had the shakes, very nice head indeed.
What real hunting is all about, passing on the ability to do a proper stalk & take an ethical shot.
No wonder you're proud of the lad!

Wunderbar! Waidmannsheil! Excellent. Congratulations to your son.

Did he use a 7mm PRC?

90 metres a good normal hunting range. Respectable.

A fine trophy. A mule deer? Is it his first. Will look great in his room.

Used the only caliber worth using in Montana.. 6 ARC

Actually used his Tikka .243 I bought him for Christmas last year.. He shoots it very well.. 90gr Swift Scirocco bullets..Leupold VX 5--3-15 Scope.. (Great Scope btw, for the money, only one I will buy at that price point, have 5 of them now on different calibers inclluding my 28Nosler)

YES, mule deer..older buck.. not so great genetics so was happy he was taken out of the gene pool.. he was bedded with nearly 2 dozen doe's in the sage brush..

New Hornady 7 PRC: Superior to the 7mm Rem. Mag?

How does Hornady's new 7 PRC cartridge compare to the 7mm Remington Magnum aka "Big Seven"?

Did your daughter get any field rat shooting in with her pink .22, this summer or were you working her too hard fencing?

She actually shot a LOT of gophers this year.. in May we entered a gopher derby.. we shot 140-somthing gophers in a day and half..

SHe shot a badger this summer.. and shoots with me on a regular basis.. Her bigger brother is obessed with hunting and trapping..she is usually with him doing something.. they were out last Sunday while I was moving cattle, building a bobcat cubby to trap them when season opens..
