Four Best Youth Rifles..

First let me state, I don't agree with this article on several fronts..First, these are NOT the 4 best IMHO, they are o.k.. but there are others.. Secondly, the main reason I posted this was to prompt parents everywhere to teach your kids to shoot, hunt, etc.. I may be preaching to the choir on this site, but thought it is worth mentioning none the less. Especially in lieu of today's world...

I picked up a little Savage .22 rimfire for my son last spring.. great little gun.. single shot, accu-trigger.. open sights..it's light --and it fits him very well.. all important..

Thanks for the post and the disclaimer.
IMHO, any adult shooter that has to be coached on guns for kids, well, the author needs the money and has to write something to be paid.

My kids and grand kids all learned on the same single shot .22 bought years ago. It sits in a gun safe just waiting for another student.

Cricket is not good for youth - for one important reason.
Once loaded and in battery with the striker cocked, if the shooter doesn't want to take the shot they need to manually pull the striker, hold it back, depress the trigger while holding the striker's cocking piece, and gently lower the striker on a live round before they can open the bolt and clear the chamber.

If the shooter opens the bolt on a live round with the striker cocked, the striker will fall on the live round as the bolt is rotated.

That's a lot to ask from a beginning shooter who is a youngster small enough to fit the rifle.

Fire the chambered round or go through the above process, or have a discharge while the bolt is opening.

Not kid stuff.

The good old Lithgow Slazenger single shot was how I learned. I have the rifle at home, where I am not at the moment so no photos. And thanks to Dad's careful storage in a dampo shed, again needs lots of rust cleaning off it.

Single shot bolt action. Manual cokcing bolt. And decocking it as well. Open sights.

Learn to use open sights before a scope. Else the kid never will learn them.

Learn to shoot carefully with a single round. Not spray and pray as one friend did in boyhood with his semi auto .22.

Learn to stalk real close with those open sights.

Learn to value simple stuff. Never give a kid something super fancy. They should earn that themselves.

The best rifle for a kid is something cheap, basic, simple. They can learn on. And safe as well of course.

Today we also use these Lithgow single shots as the "camp rifle" competition in the BGRC competitions. Fun to use them there as well.

How did I learn? I taught myself.
After becoming VERY proficient with the Daisy slide action BB gun, I bought myself a Winchester slide action .22 and shot it a lot. Here is same grandson learning/practicing with my .22 . He has now purchased his own lever action .22.

Similar with me..I had a bb gun at 4 to 6 ..starting shooting my grandfather's Winchester 1895 single shot .22 rimfire..eventually got a Coast to Coast (popular hardware store at the time) bolt action 22 rimfire...and used my father's. 22 Remington open sighted rifle for years..had it completely redone ..plan to pass it on to my son ...

I started shooting my brothers .177 Slavia air rifle at about 8 or 9 yrs. old.
At age 12, my uncle, a Cpl. in the RCMP gave me an "Ace" .22 for a Christmas present. I shot that until age 15, when I bought a single shot 20 bore cooey to compliment the rifle. At age 18 (I guess), I'd save enough to buy a 6.5 Rem Mag. and a 6x Bushnel scope. Later that summer, I bought Rockchucker and dies, components, etc, mostly with fox bounties from 2 close counties. I shot a lot of foxes with that 6.5.
Life seemed simpler, back then.

I am pleased to report, at least for the current time, my son and daughter are experiencing a very similar lifestyle..

I learnt with a daisy lever BB gun. Then moved onto .22 a semi auto browning take down. No spray and pray as each shot had to count. Them were the days.
