That ammo is really sub-par for an '06's speed. My 24" M70 does 2,845fps with 180's and 2,964fps with 165's. I suspect,
although I haven't chronographed them, that the 150TSX I have accuracy tested, are running something over 3,000fps.

9 to 10 feet from the first screen is normal set-up distance for sky-screen-type chronographs.

In my opinion there are really only three 30 caliber cartridges that are worth talking about
They are the 308 Winchester, the 30/06 and the 300 Win Mag. As to which is best well...in my opinion the 308 is reliable and ideal for the common working man. The 30/06 is never a bad choice and is for the thinking man; and the 300 Win is for those who like the word M A G N U M.

I own at least 1 rifle in each cartridge. But I must admit the 06 is my "go to" these days.

Cheers
Rod

Well...anything that I can say has probably been said many times before, and no doubt better. But here's my opinion on the 30/06.

I own 3 rifles chambered for the 06. A Blaser R8, a Rigby Highlander and a Winchester 1895. And up until recently I also owned a Sako 75 in 06 as well.

With the exception of the lever action all are fed a diet of 180 grain projectiles, with the Nosler partitions being my favorite.

All the bolt actions are scoped. The Rigby with 4x fixed and the Blaser with a Zeiss 1.5 to 6 and the Sako also used to run a Zeiss 1.5 to 6. All scopes are zeroed at 200 yards. All run or ran QD mounts. The Rigby & R8 are fitted with irons that are zeroed at 100 yards and the R8 also has an Aimpoint H1 which is zeroed for 200 yards. Longest shot on game with the 06 was with the Sako 75 on a Thar at a lasered 499 yards. That Thar went almost but not quiet 14 inches. Closest shot was at a pig at about 5 yards, also with the Sako.

Game that I've taken with the 30/06 include Red, Whitetail and Fallow deer. Thar, Chamois, pigs, BG caribou, Dall sheep, goats, dingo, fox, cats and numerous hares.

As a side issue. Biggest game I've shot with the 308 is scrub bull, brumbies, sambar (just 1) and Red deer. Largest game shot with the 300 Win Mag is Water Buff, scrub bull, brumby and red.

I'd happily hunt anything in Australia and NZ with any one of those cartridges...loaded with the right projectiles. Each have their advantages. But as an all rounder the 30/06 is my pick.

Rod

I love the 30-06.
A lightweight '06 has been my go-to bolt gun for close to 30 years. There's bugger all finish left on the stock and the blue is nearly all gone. It still has the same scope that I put on when I bought it in the early 90's, a 2-7 Leupold in detachable mounts.
Other 30's I've owned and used include 30-30, 300 Savage, 308 Win, 30-06 and 300 Win Mag.
Loaded with quality bullets the 30-06 certainly is a great cartridge.

Another article based around “confirming” what most already know, by “refuting” what very few have actually said.

Yeah, yeah, the thirties can be used on anything from mice to moose. Since when is that actually news?
