I just had to work out your fuel consumption... In Imperial units that about 13 miles per British gallon, or 10 per US gallon.

My little Peugeot diesel gives me 60 mpg climbing French mountains, but then I am not towing a trailer...

Your old Winchester sounds like a real find - quality. That's why I like my two Savage 99s.

I missed this thread the first time around. Nice rifle!

For many years my favorite bolt rifle was a standard weight M70 chambered in .30-06. It was a 1951 creation. I had it mounted with a 4x scope, and it was a tack driver.

Somewhere along the line, after I got deeply involved with double rifles, I sold the M70. Often I wish I hadn't. Mine easily shot sub-moa 5 shot groups with the 4x scope. These rifles were made to shoot!

Looks good Daryl.

You are pretty good with the open sights as well. A 4x is great for a .30-06 as well. QD mounts might allow you to use any of your possible choices of sighting equipment.

There is just something about this rifle, makes me smile every time I pick it up. A large part of that is this rifle was owned by a close friend, one of "the family".

The open sights just seemed easy to shoot that day on that rifle - not sure why. The notch and bead diameter went together perfectly.
The first group of 1.798" prompted me to adjust the slider in the 3/4 buckhorn and shoot the other, a 4-shot group closer to the bull, but low and same amount right.
I had only fired 3, then looked and they appeared around 1 1/2", thus firing the 4th shot, which opened them up only a smidgen to 1.632".

I usually do fairly well benching a rifle but embarrassed myself when I shot with Curly at his home range in Virginia. I didn't do very well, not as well as I thought I would.
Back in the 70's a couple BR (stool) shooters gave me some tips that help, mostly posture related.

I hear you, but considering the topography we drove through, along with the high speeds on the interstate highways, I figured the mileage was good.

Without the trailer, I run 22 to 24mpg at 120 kph, around 70 mph.
Pulling the trailer down to Virginia and across to Washington on the interstates at 70 to 75mph 120 to 130, hurt my normal mileage a little bit.

Where I thought I would get the best mileage, crossing Canada's prairies, was some of the worse - 11.8 to 12mpg., due I suspect the short hills dropping down to Edmonton, then climbing uphill for almost 3 provinces - long gradual hills up, many miles long, the short little drops into river valleys. IT was strange indeed.

Funny thing is, 130kph was the normal highway speed in Southern Ontario as well, just to keep up with traffic.

In the States, poking along at 120 and being passed by 34 wheel tractor trailers doing 130 to 145 was a little nerve racking at times.

My mileage really sucked climbing up to the continental divide - 12,000 or 13,000 feet at 120 kph.

I really liked the DEF pumps at the fuel stations. In Canada I pay between $10.00 in Southern Ontario to $18.99 in NB and BC. In the states, it was, at the most, $6.00 CDN. per 2 1/2 US gallons, the same container it comes in up here.

Just did, posture related (mostly). LOL

Best is to watch a BR match, and emulate what you observe on their posture, attitude to the gun and target, heights of rests.

Foot position, angles, breathing, just as important as when position shooting, your head position and angles, due to equilibrium upset with too much angle. That is why Olympic shooters stand straight, neck straight - maintains better equilibrium, but all is a compromise to keep rests as low as possible, without leaning over too far.

Gun position on the bags is also important. More than a few guns have "sweet spots", closer to the action, further down the forearm, due to the way they vibrate and/or react to and on the bags.

Consistency of hold is very important, the "duplication" of that shot to shot, is one of the most important factors to good groups.

It all matters and needs to become second nature, an automatic system.
