L461 Vixen makeover.
      #292356 - 21/12/16 12:00 AM

Gentlemen.
I am currently working on my L461 and would like to get in touch with gents that have customized their Vixens.
I may need some guidance.
Here is the barrelled action for my L461 "Vixen". It has the original barrel chambered in 222 Rem. (For comparison a small ring G33/40, 98 Mauser). I'm not sure if I want to rebarrel it yet. This original barrel shoots like a dream even with the Norma 62 grain sp.
This actinon/barrel will hopefully be fitted with some new wood and a few other "pretty little things", like barrelband sling swivel and front sight. I hope to get hold on a m70 safety as well. Time will show. I had these Burris bases )and 30 mm rings) from my current Vixen (sold 21 years ago) and they will be used until I'm finished with shaping the stock. Maybe I'll reshape them.
The plan is to go for a kinda classic looking stock and i will fit it for my self the best I can. Since I'm no expert on wood this is a time consuming process.
I’m really enjoying to work with this little sweety.
More pictures, and I'm sure å lot of questions will be posted during the progress of the work.

[image]http://www.kammeret.no/bilder/displayimage.php?pos=-25943[/image]

Edit.
I'm giving up on this pic thing!

This was the web address that actually worked.
http://www.kammeret.no/bilder/albums/userpics/10859/FB_IMG_1482162049057.jpg
Took a while to figure it out (bit ignorant, can't read anything other than English, sorry...)

Looks like a very interesting project BTW, please keep us posted, and don't give up on the images, we love to see them!

Thanks for helping with the picture.

Here's the wood for the rifle. It is still very roughly shaped and there is a lot of wood to remove. I have started the inletting and am trying to make it "tight and comfortable" for both the barrel/action and bottom metal.

Hello Rino. Looks like a great project. I haven't heard of anyone putting an W70 safety on a Sako L-series bolt but doesn't mean it can't be done!

There is a fella here in Australia that machines stocks that has an English Classic pattern to suit a variety of actions, including the L461 Sakos - the images at the link below might give you some ideas:

Rino,

Looking forward to seeing how your Vixen project progresses.

BTW what hunting do you use the .222 for in Norway? Roe? Fox? Other?

Thanks for posting your project and looking forward to seeing how it goes.

Interesting and looks very useful. Except on the website everyone of the stocks on that page is exactly the same pieced of walnut/stock!!! No variation as to shape or theme or grain whatsoever!!! Same writing/ref on every stock.

WHERE ARE THEY LOCATED? No address, telephone number or any contact information on the website at all???

My thoughts too. But the website needs a little attention IMO. I looked for the address as I would consider visiting in person. Will have to send them a form email to find out. There is a mobile phone number I think listed in the top right hand corner of the pages.

John,

Cameron Hatcher is located in the northern suburbs of Melbourne. I had a look at the website a few days ago and there are a few updated photos starting to be added.

There are a number of Hatchers stocks currently advertised on the used guns website - search by category =parts/accessories, state = Victoria, and search text = stock. I saved a few example photos to post here but can't immediately see how to add them to this post

Here are some links though:

https://www.usedguns.com.au/Product.aspx?p=92660

https://www.usedguns.com.au/Product.aspx?p=92657

I posted earlier about never having heard about a Win70 style wing safety on an L series Sako, then what do you know:

https://www.usedguns.com.au/Product.aspx?p=88465

Yes but sweet will it be when you are able to admire and use a rifle with a stock you carved yourself. Great work Rino!

I haven't had a chance to do a lot more on the rifle. The action, barrel and bottom metal is in place and I have started to slim the wood and have done some shaping of the pistol grip.
I'm sorry for the forearm still looks like a Weatherby. I will slim it a lot more and then shape it. And mount a new ebony or another dark brown piece of wood as a nice tip. The ebony I had glued in there cracked.

And, I now see that my roughly shaping gave me a LOT of more wood to carve.
The good thing is, I don't need to get bored the next few days.
And this kind of work is giving me great satisfaction.

Have slimmed the fore end and are working on the grip end.
Think I might cut it and make a grip end in ebony or some dark brown hard wood.

Thoughts?

I have ordered a scope for the rifle and as soon as I get it I just have to go hunting.
The rest of this project must wait till after some hunting.

Well, then I'm gonna quote my self

John, I have given this a lot of thoughts. First i bought a new Zeiss Conquest dl 3-12X50 for this project but after just a few looks at the scope I just can't stand it on this little rifle. The "batterybox" is just ugly!
My second plan was to put on a smaller scope like a Leupold 2-7 or a 3-9 I have laying around, but last night I got hold of a five years old 2,5-10X50 Zeiss classic in mint condition as well, and since I will use this rifle for hunting in low light conditions like baiting fox at night, as well as daylight I will fit two scopes. The Zeiss and one of the Leupolds. But time will tell.

It took some serios time to finish this rifle, but last night I were able to finally mount the sling.

Now it's time to zero the scope and wait for the 10th of august (roe buck season opening).
