I don't use any Magnums anymore, thou there maybe a 7saum LR rifle in the future.
When I could handle the recoil, there was little I didn't do with a 300wby. Excellent choice for everything right up to the ones that will stomp you. The bitey ones are handled quite well with it.
I have spent more than a little time with the .375H&H as well. Truly the best "One Gun" if heavy came is a going concern as well as do to the size for the pot.
Of the stoppers I pretty much settled, thou it is hardly "settling", on the 458Lott in a bolt and the 450NE in a double.

now-a-days I use a .22, .240, .256 and my cannon is a 8x54KJ

I don't understand the sense of this report . There are a lot of Magnum cartridges of all calibers .

What he mean with the "Best" magnum cartridge ?

A cartridge is the "Best" if ideally suited for a game and adapted for all situation related to this hunt .

A good question were what do we need really and what is superfluous , sometimes ridiculous !

The 9,3x64 is a very good cartridge , but without a belt , that's not a "Magnum" !

There are good socalled "magnums" out there, but then there are magnums and then there are MAGNUMS.

True magnums magnum most be a .378Wea or in the old world Holland & Hollands .577/500 Magnum.

I have the .378Wea, but in pursue of the .577/500 Magnum.

I actually use a few on a regular basis here..


The 300RUM is my go to gun for elk..use the .257 Weatherby almost exclusively on antelope and mule deer..have used the .416 Remington on all my African hunts with incredible results..and just last year used the .264 Win on elk which worked very well...have also used the 338RUM on elk..but as stated, really don’t see the need for that much power for elk...

Agree as stated above, seems as I get older don’t find it as necessary to get out the big guns as often..but still fun time to time...

Lancaster has the right perspective!
Firstly a "magnum" is a bigger/more powerful version of an existing calibre. True H&H may have coined the phrase with the belted .375 H&H; certainly much more powerful than the .375 Velopex which correct me if I'm wrong gents was the original belted case? - it was used for headspacing not extra material at the case head to hold back higher pressures.
Then came the arms race with the 9.3x62! This set the cat amongst the British pigeons & boy did they deliver. The .375H&H, .416 Rigby, .404 Jeffery,.425 WR just to name a few!
So our German friend Wilhelm Brenneke decided to up the ante - aka 9.3x64mm......Sorry gents but it tops the .375H&H.
Not to be out done Mr Weatherby made the .378 Weatherby Magnum & the velocity then went through the roof!

Now this is where Grandveneur is correct...."A good question were what do we need really and what is superfluous , sometimes ridiculous !"
We all like certain rounds, sometimes just for a name (Rigby), a calibre (.425WR) or a legend (Bell's 7x57mm) - it really doesn't matter what calibre we like, magnum or otherwise; superfluous numbers of rifles(sorry if I could afford more I would - & yes I certain agree with Rignymauser - a .577/500 Magnum would be neat!
So there gents - you are all correct - its all perspective!

But the 9.3x64mm is the best design & more efficient than the .375H&H....sorry folks I'm biased!

And that's from an Anglophile !!!


I think you are correct, the 375 Velopex
was the original belted case.

I have owned and used magnums from 17 to 500, and I currently own and use few different magnum calibers.

My favorite is the first -- the NA&A 500/450 Magnum BPE 3-1/2"
I do not know of another magnum-named cartridge that precedes it.
In my Tolley it's a flat shooting ripper with the 350gr bullet.

404 Jeffrey with modern load of 400gn @ 2400 and a reload 300gn at a modest 2650. All you need.

A genuine magnum most appear convincing in size , and deliver the message in the most spectacular way in comparison to it's smaller brothers. It must be an exercise in show of force.

The game dictates what is needed for stopping power.

My .17 Rimfire Magnum has not let an enraged gopher get me yet. It converts the close ones into chunks. I don't think the .505 would be necessary. "Use enough gun".

Some German / European makers do.

I think the take off in popularity of the 9.3x62
has put paid to the 64 taking off more.

Yes, some who "find" the 9.3 calibre might get a custom one made but in terms of numbers, factory rifles will now focus on the 62.

I agree - the 9.6x62 has literally 'taken off'. Once people realize it is not restricted to it's factory loaded level of 1923 ballistics when hand loaded, it should increase further in popularity. On the other hand, being a mild mannered, but git'er-dun kind of round has appeal too.

John Taylor noted in "African Rifles and Cartridges" that the increased speeds to 2,340fps for the 286gr. were not necessary for any African Game. He said the original ballistics driving both soft and solid 286gr. at 2,175fps was plenty.


Those original 9.3x62 ballistics sound like a slightly more modern loaded 9.3x57 M46 Husky, don't they.

Well here's a challenge for the "big" companies like CZ, Mauser or even Ruger to offer the 9.3x64mm in a factory rifle........amongst other fine older calibres including the 10.75x68mm or even the .404 Jeffery?

Although can't see any reason to offer the 10.75

I reckon the fact that Tikka offer it in a variety of rifles was why it took off, especially in Australia and probably in other countries as well.
That's just my personal opinion.

Why would they bother? Gun makers build rifles that will sell, Id much rather a ruger in 416ruger than a 404.
Also see no real need or market for 9.3x64mm as the 375h&h or ruger have it covered and them some.

Here, it's the infusion of hundreds of used Husqvarna M98's and M96's from Sweden in 9.3x62, along with Ruger, Zastava and CZ in new rifles.

Maybe either the .300H&H or .375 H&H???

Nitro, I think it has a bit to do with having something a bit different from every other Sheep in the Flock!
Every body has a .308, (Christ, I have 3 of em!) but I also like to have something with a bit of history attached to it and possibly some nostalgia, thrown in for good measure!!!
The wonderful thing about living in this "Kinda Democracy" is, CHOICE!
FMD, it would be a boring old world if we were all the same!!!

To me the most useful cartridges with magnum suffix are the old classics:

handgun: 44 Magnum

rifle: 300 H&H (rimmed and rimless)
375 H&H (rimmed and rimless)
400 H&H (yes, that one is not so old...)

Sorry Nitro, but I think you missed the mark - otherwise we'd all be using .378 Whetherby's or whatever has the biggest case next!
How many fine old cartridge are still out there in fine old pieces of hardware just waiting to be used again!
Wish I had a few more $ to spend on this stuff (read the Minister of War & Finance said "NO"), but this is why we like the oddball - would you throw away a .450NE just because the .458 Winnie does it better???? If so please feel free to PM any time & I'll take it off your hands free of charge!
Now I'd better get out of the way now as the rest of the mob here would trample me in the process first!

Agree with 9.3x64. I have not found another round that kills like my .338 Magnum on buffalo or other ferals, but it sits in the gun safe as I enjoy so much more using the old rifles I have.

I have always done well with mine. On chest shots I really liked the way it performed. Still anything through the heart does well. I have not used a 375 H&H That much but certainly no problems there. I used to use barnes x projectiles in the .338 but these days it sits in the safe. Much more fun with the 404. 338 was lightening on donkeys and brumbies. All in the eye of the beholder I suppose.

I have a few friends here in Northern BC who dearly love their .338's.

I've preferred the 9.3 (standard cases, magnum performance) and .375 H&H and '06IMP.

You aren't the only one who uses a 338WM well and it works.

Anything through the heart kills them but I reckon
the 375H&H makes a much bigger hole and shock when
it kits than a 338WM on Buffalo.

Agree, bigger is better.

Interesting, I have heard that from a few people. That the .338 Win Mag does not work well on water buffalo. Yet a couple said the 8x68S does work well ... Does not seem logical. Maybe it is something to do with bullet construction?

If one means "magnum performance" rather than a belt, the .375 H&H is hardly a magnum performance cartridge today, but it still does what it is meant to and not badly at all.

Personally I really dislike increasing velocity beyond a certain sort of speed in a bigger bore rifle. Around the 2000 to 2600 fps speed. They aren't meant to be sniper rounds. Most scenarios anyway, and if shooting at soft skinned targets, is a big bore needed or desired?

If one wants more performance than a .375 or 9.3x64, upgrade to a .400 or .416. Want more, go to a .450/.458/.470, more? Go to a .500, then a .577 or .600. After that recovery time is getting really silly. Rather than more speed, a heavier bullet, with greater calibre is what works better.

And greater speed? Very few people buying a .378 Wby or .460 Wby ever consider if the bullets are built for those speeds and reliable expansion and penetration.

Why suffer the recoil for no added benefit?


Now if we are talking about longer distance rounds, we are talking about small to medium sized calibres, IMO.

9,3x70 DWM magnum for sentimental reasons Among today's offerings it got be 375 Blaser Magnum, no stinking belt like on the outdated design 375 H&H
