338-378 WM Velocity

Does anyone have a 338-378 WM rifle?
If so, what is the actual muzzle velocity of factory 200 grain bullets?

Weatherby claims 3380 fps with a 200 grain bullet. They claim 3060 fps out of the old .300 Weatherby for comparison.

You need a muzzle break to cut the recoil down on such a monster. I will never use a muzzle break personally, nor will I hunt with anyone who has one fixed on their rifle. Even if I like the person. They hurt.

Thank you for the reply.
I was hoping to know about actual velocity of the factory load, fired through a production gun.
We are experimenting with a lightweight 200 grain, 12 ga slug and received 3000 f/s, loaded in 3" hulls.
Since the 338-378 WM with a 200 grain bullet is the fastest factory cartridge with such a bullet weight, I was thinking if we could reach or surpass its velocity using 3.5" hulls.
I agree with you about muzzle brakes. Don't like them either. But, a 200 grain slug at 3000 f/s from a 7.7 lbs Benelli Nova shotgun does not kick appreciably, I would say.

Lefteris - check out Ed Huble's thread here called 12 bore from Hell. There you will find data for 12 bores running much heavier slugs at 3,000fps or more.
It's quite long, but the data is very impressive.

I have read the 12gaFH thread and Ed did a lot of work with the 12ga with impressive results.
Difference is that we have to keep everything under the CIP's maximum pressure for the 12ga (under 1050 bar) so that they could be used by anyone with an off the shelve shotgun.

We achieved 3375f/s with the Lightning 12 slug (200 grains) loaded in 3" hulls in a Benelli Nova shotgun with 24" smoothbore barrel.
I read that shooters feel that a 338-378 WM rifle has a lot of kick. In a 7.7lbs shotgun kick is almost non existent even shooting off bench.
