CRC 9.3x62
      #219816 - 19/11/12 02:26 PM

Hi folks,

I thought some of you might appreciate photographs of my custom 9.3x62 as it nears completion. The photos show the rifle in the white before engraving, bluing & stock finishing. The project has been undertaken by the Custom Rifle Company in Townsville including supply of the walnut blank. The stock work has been carried out by Gordon Cusens in Tasmania. Ron Croxon will complete the engraving work in the near future. I anticipate fitting a Leupold 1.75-6 x32 once I have become proficient in the field with the express sights.

I will add more photos as the job progresses.

The components include:
- FN 98 action
- Lothar Walther barrel
- 1909 (modified) bottom metal
- custom bolt handle
- Recknagel express sights
- Timney trigger
- Talley bases & rings
- Talley sling swivels(twin screw on rear)

I always like a iron sighted Medium.
Like the cut away bridge as well as stock shape.

Looking good. Is it not a bit high in the comb for iron sights? Looks about perfect for a low scope though. I used a straight 2X Leuy on my Mauser for years - perfect combo.

I would like to see a better pic of the root of the bolt handle. It looks like the end of the root is extended and profiles over the top of the stem and is a way I havent seen it done before. Looks good as does the whole package.

Hi Daryl you are right on the money. The stockmaker has compromised the comb height for my preference to use the rifle predomitaley with a lightweight low power scope. I think he has done a great job of not spoiling the lines of the stock by making it too straight with a higher comb.
I am looking forward to using the express sights however must face the facts, my babyboomer eyesight is fading!

Thats a relief. When I read the title I thought it was going to be about using CRC to free up your 9.3.

Very nice rifle. I like the way the bolt handle is attached. Good stock work. If it shoots half as good as it looks you will have a seriously accurate rifle.

A tastefully done rifle. If you would get specific about the rifle specifications I would appreciate it. The barrels length and rate of twist. Is it glass bedded? Type of crown. Length of pull, overall weight, et cetera.

This is an elegantly simple rifle. I would love to pictures of some groups out of it when completed.

Albertan,
Thanks for the comments. I will post more photos as they become available including a shot of the crown. The rifle has grouped a fraction over 2.0" @ 200 yards with the express sights during regulation.
-barrel length is 24.0"
-twist rate is 1-14.2"
-length of pull is 14.0"
-weight is 7.10oz as pictured

Now that is really nice. I have a 9.3x62 in the works as well and I tried my hands at building the stock. In my head it looked like the one in your pictures, but can't say mine quite turned out like it.

Hello again forum members, I have attached some updated pictures of my completed rifle as promised. This rifle is balanced beautifully, feeling much lighter in the hands than its 7lb.10oz. The express sights are a joy to use and the rifle really shoots!!

I wish to express my gratitude to my mate Charlie Curley of the Custom Rifle Company in Townsville for his precision metalwork, his style guidance and for seeing this project through the many challenges to produce this great hunting rifle!

I would like to sincerely thank and acknowledge Gordon Cusens for his artistic talent with walnut, as well as his personal touch spending hours understanding my needs. I am sure you will agree that these pictures speak volumes about his workmanship and style!

I would also like to thank Ron Croxon for his top quality engraving inlay work!

Is that metalwork blued, or one of the bake-on finishes like cerakote? Looks like the latter in the photos.

Cheers mate.

Beautiful!

I am interested I the distance from the end of the forend to the front sling swivel? What is the distance and how did you decide on it? It looks great but I kind of thought 1.5-2 in he's was the rule of thumb?

Itīs quite normal to see such a long distance in older british rifles.

Is that distance for longer barrels rifles or for lighter caliburs?

You could see them quite often in those older british-made mauser and steyr rifles whose fore end stock is shorter than most factory current ones and barrels longer too. Caliber doesnīt mean so much.

I always thought that the Brits positioned the front sling mount so that when the rifle is on your shoulder, the muzzle will be level or just below the top of your head, so as to not catch on anything. Could be wrong but the buggers did do most things for a practical reason.

I was looking at an old Husqvarna 640 in 9,3x62 yesterday with a FN98 action. Started thinking of buying it, the rifle store wanted 150$ for it. Could be a nice project. And after seeing these pics.........

Hi Gabe

Thanks for your response, the objective was to produce a practical one gun hunting rifle that I could pass on to one of my sons when I am too old!

The blueing job was achieved via low pressure bead blasting with fine media. The pics were shot with my mobile phone.....

Guys
The position of the sling attachment was to intended to aid a low carry of the rifle in the bush i.e. below the top of my head when I am standing upright.
