Zastava 9.3 A.O.K
      #191513 - 09/10/11 08:47 PM

Well.I got my Zastava 9.3x62 for the weekend thanks to HUNTERSHEART.

I had sent it to Jim Kent to get it bedded and a trigger job.

First impressions were good for the money.

Took it to the range at my Fathers and used my other 9.3's load of 58 grains of 2208 under the 286 grain Woodleigh PP for 2350 fps over the chrony.

Took 5 shots at 50 yards to get it "close" then shifted the target to 100 yards and fired 3 shots.
I couldn't see the group through the 4 power Nikon scope but was pleased when I walked up and saw the result.

By fatboy404 at 2011-10-09

Took it out this arvo and shot this boar to draw first blood with it.

Neale,
Good work, you've gotta be happy with the accuracy.
One of these has been seriously tempting me as well, however in piss ant Adelaide it's hard to get a look at one.
What are you thoughts the finish? Is it really rough (compared to the standard ZZK)?
Did you go the synthetic stock because the wood version is really bad?
Is the trigger guard/magazine housing steel or die cast alloy?
George

I hate you. Ha-ha :-) you make me so jealous mate sitting hear at home thinking now that the 6.5 x 57 looks pretty good. You had better call me tomorrow to give me all the nifty details. The synthetic stock works a treat hey? But I think I would have trouble going past the timber ones even with the plain finish. Beautiful group you got to be happy with that, as usual Jim did a good job on the trigger and bedding I see!

GK.

I am left handed so the timber stock is too high for me.
The plastic stock looks like a Sako A7 knock off and I am happy with it even with the hard recoil pad.

The action is rougher than than a standard ZKK but will smooth up I'm sure.
Floor plate is all metal as is the trigger guard.

I wanted a rifle to carry with me all the time at work in the ute that I could abuse and not feel guilty.
This is it !.

For $535 they are great value and I don't think it will be my last Zastava !.

One last thing, the barrel in 9.3 is very, very thin (read, looks like a 410 barrel when you look at the muzzle) but you can see how it shoots.

Viking338............You just should come and go hunting again !!!

You buy the 6.5x57 and I'll try it for you.

Talk to you Monday mate.

Better yet, buy both 9.3x62 and the 6.5x57, send them to me and I'll work up good loads for you - you can use them when you come for a hunt & I'll keep 'em nice and safe & clean in the meantime.

Another great thread from FB.

Sometimes I wish Fatboy didn't live so far away, meaning , of course, that I should be HIS next-door-neighbor!

Was this an original factory 9.3 or was it rebarreled?

As for thin-tubed 9.3's, I remember a rifle we shipped off for a rebore {20 years ago now, when I worked in the gun shop}. It was a Browning BAR .30-06 that the owner wanted to make a 9.3x62 out if.

He got it, and about the second or third shot blew the front sight clean off.

The rebore crowded into the screw hole for the front sight and that t'was that. The tube was chopped back behind the threads and the fellow wound up with a nice, neat, unique, Browning BAR 9.3x62 with a 20-inch tube.

That would be a handy scrub gun.

It is a factory gun.

We would have some fun Rod that is for sure if we were neighbours, but what would we fight about as we agree on most things ?.

Here is a photo of the muzzle.

Would a barrel of that thickness in a double rifle be "normal" ?.

It must be a cost saving to use the one profile barrel from say 9.3 all the way down to 6mm.

Not much chance of a re bore on this model.

G'Day fella's,

Nice lookin & shootin rifle there Fatboy 404!

The barrel may be thin but you could still cut a Metric M14 x 1mm thread on it and fit one of my suppressors/Cans to it! Oh that's right, where not in NZ are we!!!
Give it time and we will wear them politicians & Police down!!!

Neal, nice shot on the Moggy mate but hasn't anyone told you?

Well Obviously - Just look at the difference - Doh!

I had a 275gr. from my .375 BRNO stop inside a prairie picket pin - Richardson's Ground Squirrel by make, no more than 1 1/8" in diameter - the bullet stopped under the hide of his back. Slit the skin with a pocket knife and it fell out into my hand. Even the .303 would shoot through them - sheeeeeesh!

No I probably choose to use a FMJ, as everyone knows the "striped bush panther" is a potential man eater and killer. One would not choose to let loose one of them wounded. The losses would make the tolls of Corbetts leopards in India look negligible in comparison!

(Probably the bullet was a 300 gr RNSP Woodleigh Weldcore)

Ha but seriously Neale as usual good shooting, but I reckon you really used my CZ then snuck your ".410" in for the photo. Haha you can swear at me tomorrow, talk then mate.

That is a thin barrel but it seems to work.

Here is a 286 grain Woodleigh PP recovered from a pig today.

The 45kg pig was shot in the "south end" at about 120 yards and bullet found behind the ear.

58 grains of 2208 with a CCI mag primer for 2370 fps.

These were my Brno's loaded rounds but they chambered in my Zastava.

To make things easier, all my Highland brass is for the Zastava and my Norma brass is for the Brno ZKK.

When I run out of 2208,I am going to use 56.5 grains of 2206H for 2400 fps with the 286 grain bullet.

Once again to make things simple,I will load 2209 in the 404,375 H&H,8x68s and 338-06.

Then load 2206H in the 6-223,both 9.3x62's,45-70 and 458 win mag.

Two powders should do it.

Ah- 2208=Varget.

I've really come to like H4895 and BLC2 in the 9.3x62 and a very similar round ballistically and with identical case capacity, my 375/06IMP.

AR2209, I find to be quite versatile. I use it in my 270Win, 35Sambar, 375H&H and 416 Rigby-once the 2213sc is gone.

I have put about 80 rounds through the Zastava now and I am liking it more and more.

Shot six pigs this afternoon with seven shots, all on the run.

This fella was the biggest.

FATBOY404, did you have any feeding problems with the Highland 286Gr ammo, mine will not feed them, & did you shoot her for grouping before you had it glass bedded ?

I will be using Nosler Partitions 286Gr so I think they will feed, but also have Nosler DG Flat Nose Soilds, they may not work !

You're giving that rifle a good workout Neale.
It sounds like a good value for money gun, that's for sure.

I've seen them priced around the $450.00 to $550.00 bracket here. It seems a fine price for a new '98 Mauser rifle, especially in 9.3x62. One in 6.5, 7 or 8mm x57 would also be nice.

Certainly a versatile round. Especially when you don't need to see through the scope to hit stuff because of all the mud!

The scope wasn't that clear to see through by the end of the morning.

Sorry I did miss it.

I had it bedded and floated before I got hold of it.

Wouldn't feed RN pills at all so I opened up the feed rails myself and it will feed Hydro's now.

Thank you very much for that, mine looks like the feed rails were opened up too much compared to a standard Mauser 98 action, the nose's go just to one side of the chamber or the other, left goes right & right goes just to the left !

Cheers

Here is a photo of the muzzle.

That's the same muzzle dia as a 7mm Rem Mag Whitworth American Field I once owned. I'm guessing that with the larger bore the weight savings in the barrel might be as much as 4oz over the 7mm Rem Mag.
