Brno zkk 600 in 8x68s.
      #183299 - 09/06/11 11:12 AM

Well I have got my 8x68s finnished.
It is built on a zkk 600 action opended up by a couple of mm's. I am loading 200 grain Woodleigh PP and Speers with 72 grains of 2209 with a c.o.l of 90mm for 3000 fps.

The barrel is a 26" #722 Lothar Walter supplied by Axel(HuntingSchneider)on NE.

All bits and pieces came from Greame Sraggon (0427319589)grip cap and sling swivels.

Daryl Stevens (0419772048) suppiled the timber and did all the stock work.

Tony Small (Nickal Gunsmithing 0429358303) did all the metal work and rust blueing as well.

Thanks to all these fella's for their time and effort.

Hi Neale,

The rifle turned out very nicely and thanks for posting. Tony did a wonderful job and by your previous 'Hunt' pictures with it shows a devastating caliber.

Cheers Mate,

Jeff

Neale that is a great looking rifle and a great calibre.

Tony and Daryl can both give themselves a pat on the back for work well done. I realy do like the wood in the stock.

It is a joy to use I must say.

Have read about "fierce recoil" and bad behavior from this cartridge but so far have not seen this for myself.

Maybe when I get excited with 220 grainers this will change but I don't think so.

Thanks for the replies and I will keep you posted.

I found the recoil to be a bit softer than the various .300 mags. Perhaps this is due to the heavier weight of the 8x68's I've fired - perhaps.

I really like the stock work, Neale - they did a great job. The 'panels' are tastefully executed as is the grip.

Thanks again.
I have got three days off this week and I,m hunting pigs for all of it.

Guess what rifle I am taking ?.

I have loaded 50,200 grain Woodleigh's for the trip so will see how they handle the velocity.

Should get my new camera Tuesday,so will get a photo of them and a couple of recovered projectiles photo's as well.

As everyone has said, the 8x68s is very hard on projectiles.

It happened on my first stock (9.3x62) by accident.
Daryl Stevens was shaping the butt into the grip cap and left a little bit.
He then turned it into a feature, sent me a photo and said "what do you think".
To which I said "I love it".He now has done it on all my stocks.

As to handling velocity.

Here is a photo of a recovered 200 grain Woodleigh.
Head shot a pig running at me and found it at the last rib on a 25kg pig.
Weighs 101 grains.

Quality workmanship on everything. No doubt you're very pleased with the end result.
As for the little bit behind the grip, I think it looks very neat indeed. It just seems to look right.
I know you'll put that rifle to good use mate! Thanks for showing us.

Ozhunter.

Would you believe that those stocks were modeled off a Rem 700 classic stock.

With my 9.3 that was first I asked Geoff Slee for a unfinished 700 classic stock with a Brno ZKK inlet and Daryl did the rest.

The 8x68 stock was copied from the 9.3 and just beefed up a little all over.

About 20 inches of drop.

Nice. Might only be a 2 shot group but the followup shot is going to be close to the first and both straight down the middle. Good shooting Neale with a very nice rifle and calibre.

The reason there is two shots is I fired one and then my mate asked if he could fire one.
Not bad as I am left handed and he right handed.

Amazing shot placement for 2 different guys. I have the same situation with one of my friend. We could sight each other's rifles - that doesn't happen as often as one might think.

My brother and I are close to 3" apart at 100 meters - with a scoped rifle yet.

20" at 400 shows excellent range for that bullet - how high at 100?

About 2.5 inches high at 100 yards Daryl.

I find I can shoot most right handers rifles and true up some of their rifles for them as they dont get a lot of time.

that behind the grip stock feature was called a "chin strap" by some American custom stock maker, I can not recall who at the moment.

Very litte new at any rate - some muzzleloaders have had them - pistol gripped rifles, of course. That limits countries of origin and period, of course.

I'm sure I saw an English Sporting rifle of the 1850-60 period with that 'chin strap'- raised panel around the crip cap. Too, they were common on some plains rifles around the bottom of the cheek piece and behind the tangs.

Quite normal on Sharps as well, forward from the bottom of the action - that would put them 1874 through 1885 anyway.

This in no way, detracts from their form and good looks.

Shelhamer chin strap, signature treatment 1940 & on, named after Tom Shelhamer who did stock work for A.O. Niedner's shop in Dowagiac, Michigan. Have seen this same chin strap treatment on a Franz Sodia 98 Mauser from Ferlach that I have as well. I think it originated in Germany/Austria but was a signature detail used by Shelhamer after 1940 and became known as the Shelhamer chinstrap. It is a nice feature that make a custom stock stand out. I have been building up a 8x68S and should be shooting soon, Can't wait!

Hi Fatboy404

sorry for dragging up an old thread but maybe you could help.

You mentioned that you used a Lothar Walther #722 barrel for this build. I see on the Lothar Walther website they have pre-chambered / pre-fit #722 profile, 26" barrels threaded to suit M98 actions available. Is this the barrel used for this build or is the BRNO ZKK specific thread different to a M98?

I ask because I intend to re-barrel a ZKK 600 and am looking at grabbing on of these barrels in 9.3.

Hi Rhodes, I know the tread cut is definitely different. Also I know this rifle well and have shot it at Neale’s place. He did order the barrel as chambered but un-threaded for this reason. I know it is dearer to order one un-cut as they normally just thread them all for Mauser’s and it is considered a special order to get one chambered but not threaded.

Hope this helps

Steve

Thanks Steve,

that's a big help. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I read Frank DeHaas' book and he suggests the BRNO action is based on the M98 but doesn't mention any thread difference. He also doesn't show a separate barrel stub drawing for the BRNO like he does for the other M98 derivatives so I wasn't sure.

I'm making inquiries with a barrel distributor at the moment and yes, he did mention the extra cost for a non shelf item (M98 thread) barrel. I'm just trying to find a profile now that will match the factory ZKK 600 barrel close enough to use the factory stock.

If Lothar Walther don't cut the ZKK thread I'll have a chat to the gunsmith when he gets back from holidays about cutting the threads to suit if I order an un-threaded barrel stub as you suggest.

Apologies again for the off topic thread dig everyone. Hopefully it will help someone taking on a similar project.

Cheers
Darren

No worries Darren, glad to help. I think the #722 profile Neale ordered is very sexy on his rifle. I doubt you would go wrong with that profile.

Hi John, yes we talk every week and I go and stay with him several times a year (he lives seven hours from me). He works very hard at his new place of employment. He has gotten into hunting with a bow lately (as have I) to expand his hunting options and skills.

Kind regards
Steve
