Ok how many of you guys have and shoot a 30-06.
I have a winchester model 70 in the 30-06 and just love it.
What is the biggest animal that you have shot with yours?
Mine would have to be a 400 pound bear.
What is the biggest animal that you have heard of being shot with a 30-06?
I know there are plenty of moose shot each year in North America with 30-06 and probably have been a good number of brown and grizzly bears shot too.
How about over in Africa what is about the biggest animal you guys would recomend shooting with a 30-06? Is an eland getting too big for it or would it be just fine?

Just a few thoughts on my part I thought I would throw out to you guys

I have a pair of -06s, but mine are 25 and 35cal... my dad has an old 30-06 that has been implemented successfully on game up to and including Elk... no problems and a sweet, sweet gun.

Sorry I have never shot one but it should be perfect for moose and black bear. I think, it is my opinion only, that it is a bit light for Brown or grizzly bear.

06 -- first rifle I pick to hunt deer, pigs or black bear.
It kills elk but not nearly like a 338 or a 375,
especially at longer ranges. For an all around rifle, it's
tough to beat.

I bought a .30-06 as my first serious "world" hunting rifle. In handles everything below buffalo with more than adequate power and I would use it on buffalo if I had too. Did in fact hunt buffalo with 220 gr solids once but never connected with a buff.

In Australia and New Zealand I have hunted feral pigs, goats, cattle, donkeys, skippies, fallow deer, red deer, hog deer and sambar deer with it.

I used my .30-06 on my first safari to Zimbabwe and hunted zebra, impala, duiker, wildebeest, warthog, kudu and eland with it. In fact my PH wanted to prove a point with it as another PH in camp told him a.30-06 could take an eland. So he wanted a one shot kill on an eland. In the end the eland was nicely shot in the heart with a left rear quartering shot to the heart with a 200 gr Nosler Partition. A second shot (for insurance) was made through the shoulders to the dead on its feet animal. From memory I think eland weigh about 1600 lbs (?).

I personally prefer to use something like my .375 on eland in future sized game as the margin for error is a little greater.

I just counted up my 30-06s...nine... I guess you could say I like the round. The biggest I've shot was an eland, then elk.

My favorite deer rifle is an early Mdl 70...serial # 3XX. A guy came into the shop one day about twenty years ago wanting a different scope on it and walked out with $300.00 and no rifle...or scope.

the 30-06 really is in its prime when used on deer and hogs... smack-em with a 185 or 200 and they don't get up. to me its at its limit on elk and black bears... but its flexibility really is its best feature.

I'd start with a .358cal for black bears and moose...

I've sort of inherited a Ruger M-77 30-06 from my dad, that I have been customizing for the past year.

I shot a nice Hawaiian boar on Mauna Kea with it about four years ago.

My brother took a really nice black bear with it last year, about a 6-6 1/2' boar about 350lbs or so. He stalked right up to it and killed with one 180 nosler partition at about 3 yards away Big ol' boy was so busy eating salmon he never heard us.

I think the 180gr. bullet is the best compromise. I've heard great things on the 165gr for long distance shooting, but this rifle doesn't shoot the 165grs as well, so I stick with the 180s. I'm going to try the 200grs next. 30-06 will do comfortably most North American game. I'd like something bigger for brownies, and maybe something flatter shooting for sheep and the such, but other than that its a great choice. No problem on blackies at all.

mntrapper, my 30.06 started off as a Win. feather weight with the 22" barrel and black syn. stock, she now has a 24" heavy s/s barrel and custom walnut stock, slicked up action and epoxy bedded. mate she shoots 180gners into 1/2 inch at 100mtrs all day, taken rabbit to Sambar deer with it, even though I use my 375H&H 90% of the time the 30.06 still comes out as my favorite rifle...Les

My 30-06 is a Beretta Mato with a synthetic stock. It currently wears an old Burris Fullfield 3x9x38 in Talley lever rings & bases. I will upgrade this to a Ziess 3x9x40 Conquest. I have not had the chance to take this rifle hunting yet, but the load I am going to develope for it is a copy of the Remingto Premium Safari load, 180gr Swift A-frame, Remington nickle case, Remington primer and enough IMR 4350 powder to get 2700 fps. For a practice load I will substitue a Remignton 180gr Corelokt PSP and standard brass cases. I will eventually put on iron sights consiting of a New England Custom Guns banded fornt sight with a brass faced sourdough insert and the rear sight will be a Tally adjustible aperature that can be installed on the rear base when the scope is removed. I just have to figure out how to carry it on the rifle until I need it. Any sugestions?

I thought having five 30/06's would get me top honors but Luv2Safari beats me hands down.
My first centerfire rifle was a Rem. 721 in 30/06 which I still use today and has made two safaris so far. It and 180 Nosler Partitions just seem to work on "things"
Largest critters shot to date are multiple elk, one greater kudu, one gemsbok oryx, one red hartebeest and all gave it up quickly.
I have a Push Feed Mod 70, Ruger 1B, Ruger M77, Husky, Rem 721 and a Sako in '06 Ackly Improved.
I have about the same in Pre 72 Sako's in 222 Mag and 223.
Hard to beat the old 06 even though I love my Husky 9.2 x 62 and my Rem 7600 in 35 Whelen.
I was on the Sako factory moose hunt in Finland in '85 and we killed 32 moose in 2 days with Sako 30/06' and Sako 180 grn. Hammerheads.

Here is a quote that I read on AfricanHunter.com that I thought anyone who is a fan of the 30.06 cartridge, like me, would enjoy reading:

"The Zimbabwean Parks department used 7,62x54R and 30-06 for almost all their culling (over 23,000 elephants in the 1980’s), whilst .303’s and AK’s (7.62x39) in the hands of peasant farmers and poachers have probably killed more elephants than any other calibre. In short, shot placement is everything."

I was a little surprised to learn that the 30.06 had that many elephant kills to it credit. I knew that elephants have certainly been taken with the 30.06, but not in those kinds of numbers. Now, the Zim Parks Dept. surely issued the .06 as much for economy and availability of ammo as for the actual power of the cartridge, but even still, I would consider that to be quite a testimonial of the capability of the old .06.

Howdy.
I have a Parker Hale 1200 in 30-06. Nothing flash just a straight worker.
The best load I have put through it has been Hornady 165grn spbt. 56 grns of win 760 gave me 2760 fps and on a good day, a three shot group at 200m of 16mm center to center. All most forgot. It has a 3-9 bushnell.
It do's not like any projectiles below 150grn.
The biggest thing I have used it on is jerrassic rats.
I am hoping to bag a deer with it soon.

I liek the 30/06 and have a stainless Ruger which may turn into a cz 550 at some stage. I am loading 180 gr speer RN's at the moment but have shot lots of stuff with the 165 gr nos bt

The second gun I bought was a Mauser model 3000 left handed 30-06 in 1972. It wears a 3-9 Bushnell and is the smoothest shooting and functioning gun I own. I've shot most animals with it and love it.

Had a Winchester Model 70 DBM in 30.06. Complete crap.
Wouldn't hold zero. When I took it to the gunsmith, the barrel was so loose he could turn it by hand and this was a brand new rifle. Had that corrected and the damn thing still wouldn't hold zero. Glass bedded it, even though it came in a synthetic stock and had something akin to a chewed condom stuck round the recoil lug, still wouldn't have it.

It would occasionally shoot an outstanding group and then next time out the case would wander again.
Repeated trips to the 'smith couldn't get any kind of consistency at all. Eventually bought a 1923 Mauser 7x57 and never looked back.

My local gunsmith has been very scathing about the quality of winchesters. It certainly put me off them. Nothing wrong with the calibre. My shooting partner has a Mannlicher in 30.06 and it's as sweet as a nut, powerful flat shooting and versatile. Pity my rifle wasn't the same.

I should have mentioned I bought this rifle in '92 or '93 I think it was, if they're still having quality control problems 13 years later, I definitley won't have another Winchester!!! My experience with Remingtons and Rugers however has been the exact opposite. My little Ruger .308 was a beauty. Still regret selling it.

...just wondering how many game wardens were either shooting at the same time or acting as backup on the 30-06 culls...also wondering about the field conditions at the time (open field, bush, etc.)...lastly wondering how many game wardens were injured/expired as a result of ele charges...

...reminds me of karamojo bell's exploits...

My 30/06 has killed some deer. I've had it for about 28 years. Replaced the barrel once. I just finshed finding a powder it likes very well.

I must be one of the few guys who have never owned an 06. Don't know why because its obviously a very good caliber. Probably because I have always had 308s which have always performed very well for me - even on eland.

For me the next step up logically from the 308 is the 300wsm.

But one day I would like nice classic rifle in 3006.

Why the short mag? Those are soooooooo ugly. Why not a really classy cartridge like the .300 H&H?
