A good sign that the species is not yet extinct and even has healthy conspecifics.

Even if the species recover, I would not give any hope when it comes to hunting.

The countries where that species still occur, have very restrictive hunting laws, even in some cases no longer allowing them, regardless of whether species are protected or not. You also have to take into account the extremely strict laws regarding weapons. All this will make hunting in all these countries almost impossible for foreigners, also in the future.

I think the only way Gaur will ever get hunted is if a number of beasts can be transplanted and a herd established outside of India.

I would think whever banteng can live, gaur can live. The entire North of Australia for example.

Here is a quite informative video about the species. I won't want to meet one on a city street. Ornery describes them well

What have I missed?

Banteng are established. Gaur and banteng are related. The Cobourg Peninsula is well suited to banteng. Banteng are also established inland from the Cobourg Peninsula. There are huge areas similar in Northern Australia.

There are also banteng behind wire in Texas.

Gaur lived in many areas of India. Deforestation would be the major cause if their decline.

Gaur existed in many other regions, Burma, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia. In Malay called Seladang.

***

From first hand knowledge I was told in India, one reason for gaurs decline in the parks is they are a favourite prey species for tigers. True? No idea. Allegedly tigers take a considerable toll on them.

I imagine as they are an aggressive bovine species human conflicts might also be a problem.

Gaur

Interesting but "too much steroid" over beating up the gaurs , an issue with a lot of videos.

All hypothetical. No country would allow live export.

Australia would not allow importation.

One can dream.
