No real surprises, worked well on the creeks. Used woodleigh 180PPSN's 65D . Accurate so ready for some game.
Hit some cacasses and dry creeks. Starting to heat up so promising. Heres a few pics of results.
winchester supergrade 300H&H 2-7 Leupold 120m running

Lone boar of a water hole

Next couple didn't want to leave the cool shade so got one each. Skop with new 338WM sauer, both kicked down the bank into the water

Well done Mick, excellent pigs especially the last one with a mutant foot. The Model 70 looks fantastic, I bet you are rapped with that purchase. Great choice of cartridge by your offsider as well, the 338WM is a ripper cartridge. What projectile was he using.

Yes Matt, very happy with this one Feels just right and in a great calibre.
Skop is loading 225 woodleighs and 185 TSX's, both print close together. sighted in with the woodies.

Yeah the 300 H&H is a ripper cartridge. I got to shoot a number of rounds out of an original pre-war Holland & Holland 300 Super and it was the sweetest handling rifle I have ever shot. Very light and nimble with a very trim stock and yet super fun to shoot. I decided then that I must have a 300 H&H myself one day.

With the 338 WM I have used the 250 grain Woodleighs in both PP and RNSN as well as the 250 grain Speer Grand Slam all with excellent success on Sambar deer.

Read with great interest on this.. I have a very similar Winchester in 300H&H being worked on by a local gunsmith.. plan to use it one day in Africa and plains game.


DO they 185 TSX's have similar effect as the 225 Woodleighs on the game when hit? How about penetration?? Curious as hogs soak up a lot of energy..

This is the pre-64 .300 H&H which accompanied me on all three of my hunts in Africa, shown demonstrating the spread of the impala's horns in comparison with its 26" barrel. It accounted for a large number of plains game, including Grant's, Peters' and Thompson's gazelle, gerenuk,
klipspringer, impala, fringe eared and Beisa oryx, waterbuck, sable, Grant's and Grevy's zebra and wart hog.

Really well done Mick, as usual; great rifles, great reports, great pics and great hunts. Once you will have hunted the last pieces of game around you in the NT, you should get inserted into Afghanistan where there is currently an abundant stock of vermin to get dispatched!

That is interesting and great looking rifles. Seems lots of good memories were had..

The one I am having work done on is also a pre-64.. looking forward to getting it back..been gone for over a year...

I too must confess to some envy here: the vintage Brit .300 is definitely an itch I need to scratch at some point. Picked up a bunch of cartridges at the right price way over a decade ago in anticipation of the day! Winchester Silver-tip factory loads.
....and No Mick, you cant have 'em!

Heres a couple of pics of the 300H&H, thanks for helping with purchase goes to Davin . Who I haven't met in person. Computer world contact His help with inspection , purchase and drop of to dealer importer / exporter made the process easy.
Hope to repay him with a hunt when the flu is over and we can move around again.

1950"s Winchester pre -64 M70 Supergrade , original swivels period red field mounts and a leupold VX 2. 2-7 straight cross hair Great condition for a used rifle Marked 300 magnum. initially worried that import and cal stamping were going to cause some trouble....



Ripp, what are you having done to yours? Pretty nice as they are, feel great in the hand. Original recoil pad has gone hard on mine might change it to a red pachmyer, but keep the original Winchester one .

I ran the 185 TTSX in my 338 and shot a few buff with them, they worked but I preferred the 250 partitions or 250 PPSN's they worked great A bit biased towards the partitions as they were the first real controlled expansion pills I used. Late eighties I got clients to bring them in for me. Everyone reckoned I was mad paying $1 a projectile. I rate the partitions. Used to think the 338 WM was a big gun.
Will see how the 225's go.

Marraki, I wish I could still get the silver tips as a reloading option. Kept to there velocity rating they were a good pill. Bought bulk in 150's 308 and ran them for years. Culled donkeys , horses and camels out of MT Newman with them. Ive got a heap of 200 gr 35 cal for the 358win. Ill see how they go on sambar.
Are you sure you want to keep them.
Ill bring it to the next meeting.

Paper work says 300H&H rifle is stamped 300magnum. Have had issues with calibre listings before. Cheers Mick

I am basically having it all redone..was not in good shape when I got it.. issues with barrel, bolt and stock.. won't be a collector but that isn't what I was after in this case..

Mick,

I see you try to not befoul the waters, by removing the carcases?

I felt a bit guilty about a buffalo in the middle of a stream one time, where he ran to and died. But no way could I remove it all from the middle of the stream by myself.

Are you standing guard against salties in the photo?

Congratulations on another fine vintage rifle is such a great 300 magnum cartridge. If I had a .300 Magnum, it would be either a .300 H&H Magnum in a bolt action. Or a .30 Super Flanged for a break open rifle. A set of M98's in .300 and .375 H&H Magnum would be very nice.

Well done on the "field testing" of the .300 M70 pre 64. A lovely and well designed rifle.

Thanks for entertaining us with another hunting and classic rifle thread.

Edited to add: What is the barrel length of your M70 .300 H&H?

Yes standing guard, any water is treated as croc water so a certain level of risk. Pretty certain there is no salties in this pool, but you never know. Was at the same spot yesterday and no water , so drying up quickly.
The barrel is 26".

All of those will work. The bull had heard us and was unsure of what was going on Wind was real bad and a hurried decision to change to the TSX's Quick rest of a sapling and as the bull was Half / quartering towards me. I aimed for his shoulder and had to miss his horn as his head was low. About a 100m shot , at the impact I knew it was good . He hopped around on the spot so put the second in when he was side on and broke both shoulders. Pulled the next shot as he went past a tree, Down in about four more steps.
Finisher on the ground. Awesome bull plenty of character and old. Cataract on his left eye.
Like this animal more than the one I got a few weeks ago even though it isn't as big.

Brilliant old bull buffalo, looks like he was a very old specimen with the deterioration of the horns. Nice lot of pigs as well. certainly a brilliant score with the pre '64, they really are a classic rifle.

Great stuff Mick, one can't help but be envious of the fantastic buffs you have taken with the 300 in such a short space of time since taking ownership. I am impressed with how effective the 300 is.Just goes to show what difference premium bullets can make with smaller calibers.
