What other species?
      #285062 - 11/07/16 06:12 PM

G'Day Fella's,

I was thinking the other day, what other species of Game Animals it would have been nice to have been introduced by our wonderful Fore Fathers?

Ibex in NZ, came to mind.

Any thoughts?

Doh!

We have enough pest species here Homer so dont you go wishing any more ground damaging animal types on our long suffering country. Put them in your own back yard if you want them.

Hefalumps would have been great, but I think the mix is pretty good right now.

Something predatory perhaps? Tigers?

barasingah instead of cane toads would be a good swap.

I wonder why some people think an immediate negative response is needed on any new discussin topic?

I often say NZ is a hunting paradise, but without all those introduced "pests" it would be the most boring hunting place on Earth ...

Homer,

As often I have said before, how wonderful it would be to see the great plains game species of Africa on our "savannahs". Zebra, wildebeest, impala, springbok, gemsbok, eland. Plus the woodland species of kudu, sable, roan. And herds of cape buffalo, would they interbreed with water buffalo???

Some of these do exist in Australia. I had a chat recently to a guy who has a number of species of deer and antelope. He reported some of the antelope species suffer from certain diseases and other issues in Australia. Maybe a reason some of them have not thrived? Some of those I named do exist or have existed in Australia.

Hi Homer,

I agree with you, it would have been nice to have more varieties of the African animals here in Australia but then we would not need to plan a Safari to Africa which would take some of the fun out of the hunt.

Cheers Mate,

Jeff

Unfortunately tried and failed by acclimatisation societies back in the day. They were one of something akin to 21 species/ subspecies of deer imported but there just wasnt the feed for them at the time. If you look at the invasive flowering plants we now have thriving in our urban centres - a trip on Sydney's north shore train line is an weed ecologists nightmare - a release of Muntjac or Roe could probably now be sustained by garden escapees on the urban fringe.

Tigers in NE Victorian high country would be fun, but I fear the poor buggers would starve without being able to chomp through mountain cattle as the biomass just isn't there. The smaller Vietnamese tiger might have a chance.

There has been a lot of work done calculating just what is likely to survive in Australia and what it would cost http://www.pestsmart.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Risk_Assess_Models_2008_FINAL.pdf If you can find them Bomford's bioclimatic maps of where exotic animals could survive in Australia is worth a look.

In the meantime this is an interesting image to start people thinking "what if"

Fairly sure I've chatted to the same farmer The Asian deer are more susceptible to a number of diseases than reds and fallow. Very interesting when you consider the terraforming role of sheep grazing in the establishment of invasive plants in Australia - the weeds became available for Asian deer to munch on but the diseases in sheep kept the populations in check. In the past decade has the decline in wool industry given Asian deer populations a chance to grow?

G'Day Fella's,

Nice to see your responses to this!

Von Gruff, only a hypothetical question there good mate, LOL!
Mind you, wouldn't it be great to see/hunt Ibex, roaming around NZ's Sth Alps.

Avagreatweekendeh!

Ibex on the South Island would be grand, except that many more hunters would be there you be tripping over each other.

Certainly would be good if Oryx, Kudu and Eland could be released and survive here and Hippos just so the salties can receive a touch up by something bigger than them.
