Thanks to Matt Graham of Hunt Australia for organising our access to one of their old properties.

Hi John,

Some very nice photos, imagine how much that it would have cost for that steel fence to be made let alone the freight costs....

Cheers,

This might sound like a silly question for you old hands down under .. BUT how do you tell the difference between domestic cattle and the wild critters. The rancher might get a touch testy if you put a hole in his best blue ribbon beef.

Very good question... depends a bit on the type and quality of the cattle that the station is running but..as a rule....

- You get an idea of the kind of places where you are more likely to see wild ones, by experience and by talking to the staff
- the wild ones will most often have a very different look to the domestic ones. Most places in the tropics will be trying to run as much braham blood into their domestic cattel, whereas the wild ones will be Bos taurus origin or hybrid.
- domestic stock will not have horns as a rule but you have to be careful with that
- double check that the animals dont have brands, tags and earmarks.

That's a question I have never fully understood but ...

Firstly if it charges and you can't escape, it gets shot!

Like the one the faced me off in an angry but perhaps inquisitve manner.

Also as said in the story the stations don't always use all of their leasehold. The cattle outside the the fenced area aren't usually mustered. Sometimes trusted hunters can hunt these areas pretty much at will.

As Matt says, a grumpy old bull with a full set of horns will probably be a scrubbie.

The absence of ear tags is another sign.

Plus some areas, such as Aboriginal Lands may not run cattle anyway, so all the cattle there are scrub feral cattle.

We were told there was no scrub bull shooting, which was a pity. But I think you would have to be a trusted person to be given this right within the fenced areas. Perhaps had I known, I would have asked can we hunt scrub bulls in the unfenced areas.

Jeff

Those steel railway sleepers would have been worth a fair amount during the steel and metals boom I think.

But the property would still need to replace the cattle yards.

What a wonderful story, It looks like you guy's have a great place to hunt a huge variety of game. I would love to hunt your country some day with both bow and rifle, however at 71years it will probably remain just a dream.

I re-read my own story and enjoyed it all over again. The rough and tough outback, the photos of outback life especially.

And also enjoyed reading Matt Graham's replies and remembering him. Matt has passed on, being relatively young and died from a heart condition a few years ago, three years ago? I hunted with Matt, as his first "client" and took my first water buffalo with him. In the "trial" weeks when he was first looking at buying the outfitter Hunt Australia from Bob Penfold. Hunted with him again jointly as fellow clients for banteng. Some SCI or similar shows. I hadn't spoken to him for a couple of years, and was glad to converse, only a short time before his passing, catching up. He had a heart condition all or most of his life.

Good to remember old mates on re-visiting posts on the forums.
