      #11769 - 18/03/04 11:22 AM

Any trips, any animal you want to hunt?

Me, well I'm after a big Boar as I'm going to try my hand at mounting the head (NO dirty comments please, you know what I mean ) AND I'm after a big barra as well.

What about you?

I want to get out after a couple of water buffalo in August.

And combine one of them with a pig hunt with you, Bakesey .

Plus maybe some magpie geese and ducks for a day or two when up there. A barramundi or two would also be palatable.

If Alan's Double Rifle hunt in the Top End (FNQ) gets going a scrub bull and some more pigs. I don't think a pig hunt down South is worth it until they breed up a little but would be better than nothing if the Northern trips weren't happening.

Some Southern duck shooting and hoping for a Cape Barren goose hunt or two on the Peninsula.

Will have a look at the Fallow as usual and hope for one of the big guys to wander through my shooting patch.

I once set myself a commitment to hunt sambar for a week each year. That was many years ago so will try to fit that in too.

Usual small game which is relaxed and enjoyable. Taking the dog and gun for an afternoon's walk.

Bakes,

Your comments always keep me laughing. Hunting camp must be fun. I am still planning on getting there soon.

I won't mount any boar heads though.

Turkey hunting is pretty big in the US hey. I've never been much into bird hunting, but these things are like (from what I've read) hunting foxes/deer/pigs. I may do some in NZ in 2006

As soon as the weather comes good (having a prolonged wet up here in the Territory) I'm planning a hunting trip with my good mate and mento Bakes after boar, buffalo and scrub bull. Only difference this year I'm finally going to take my 50 cal White Mountain Carbine, Black Powder rifle.

I've used it down south on goats with good results, so hopefully it wont let us down on bigger game. Fingers crossed

Here's a photo of the 50cal in question. A potent goat stopper. Is it going to be enough for Buffalo and Scrub Bull only time will tell.

Years ago I went to a flash resturant with the bride and being a simple man I thought I'd lash out and try an exotic dish. I saw quail on the menu and said to the waiter "I'll have the quail thankyou" Being all and such, well he bought me this poor little chook thing (only one of them by the way ) on a large plate. Thinking this to be an entree I was all smiles at the bride, the smile disapeared when the waiter said "enjoy your meal"

Gary is a good mate, a very funny guy with a sense of humor like mine, which is proberly why we get on.
I've grown up reading his stories, like alot of Aussie hunters, and you'd think that concidering the amount of hunting he's done, he'd have his shit squared away hey? BUT (whispering) I'll let you in on a secret.

Gary is a FANATICAL pig chaser and a clumsy bastard!

He gets all excited chasing pigs and falls over at the drop of a hat. Being a fanatical clumsy bastard is not a good combination, take this example. We (Gary, Matt and I) had just jumped a large mob of pigs, Gary and Matt took off I hung back due to a bad knee (and ended up shooting 2 small pigs sneaking away behind us) After about 10 minutes I heard Gary calling and we met up on the edge of the creek Gary said he'd got a medium boar with his 45-70 and Matt had taken off into the long grass after the rest of the mob. We settled in to cool off a bit when we heard Matt calling. Off we rushed, Gary quickly out pacing me. I soon lost sight of Gary not knowing where Gary and Matt where, I played safe and stood behind a large tree. Gary found me after a short wait and looking down I saw the action of his marlin open. It seems as he was leaping through the tall grass like a startled Gazell he went arse up and buried the muzzel into the dirt. Thinking quickly he grabed a stick to clear the plug of dirt......and promptly broke it off in the barrel SO now he had no dirt but a stick in his barrel and his son was in the long grass doing battle with a pig I took the rifle off him and he raced of to help Matt. In the end they killed the pig, Gary proberly fell over a few more times and I cleared the rifle

His nickname's not RTB for nothing.

That's "RIP TEAR BUST" by the way

I find stubble quail really scary too.

Grrrr - just imagining them in the stubble. Frightens me enough to carry a gun.

I had a couple (or more?) at a local restaurant recently. Nicely crusted with Asian five spice. Absolutely fantastic. It didn't matter how long it took, I ate every bit.

Bakes.

When you do as much hunting, especially pig chasing as I do your bound to have a few falls And as you've matured (well got older) my hunting articles have taught you much "Grasshopper"

And what do you mean? 'Clumsy Bastard'.

Oh Bugger

Bakes,

Did you drag that spotty pig out of the local farmer's barn yard? Sure looks like a tame one.

Why would anyone call you a turkey, too?

Its called a shed Ann, not a barn, we don't have barns here, only sheds

In reply to:

I don't know Ann, just misunderstood I guess

Some times we come across white pigs like this bloke below

and brown spotty ones

Throw backs? Maybe the odd station has grown domestic pigs and some have escaped? Gary has some more pic of white pigs I think. His teeth wern't real big and just down the creek from him we got a smaller boar with bigger teeth, so I don't know how this bloke went in fights.

Bakes.

How come I always seem to get the blame

Here's another white boar that was shot by my son Matt. After a hectic chase on the quad Matt nailed it with the coach shotgun. (He takes all the credit, but my driving got him close enough to shoot) It took three of us to lift it onto the termite mound.

This one was shot while spotlighting, it was eating the remains of a dead cow.

What purpose does the jack russel fill when out spotlighting?? Does it trail the wounded boar?

Our two Jack Russells, find/bail and at times the short haired male (Nip)hangs. They probablly find/bail a couple of hundred pigs a year, they are awesome.

The photo below shows Matt and his Mate Sam with a hog that was shot after being bailed by the two midget canine gladiators.

Matt, Peggy, Nip and I.
