Brand name I guess.

These boats seem to sit low in the water.

And for "stealthy" shooting of ducks FROM the boat, the shooters sticks out very high.

Hunting from small boats is the most dangereous of on-water recreational activities. The reason is probably because participants are not very interested in boating, per se. They see it only as a way to get out there and hunt. They are also usually burdened with heavy clothing and assorted gear. Please wear your life jacket.

I'm interested in how well people think these boats would perform in some wind and light waves on rivers and smaller lakes.

For ducks around here, sitting in the bull rushes - it would work very well, indeed. With the ability to put up a light framework with camo netting, against a high bank of dirt would also work - long poles shoved into the mud with netting attached - boat behind, and against the shore.

I can see it, but I think it would be better for a smaller duck dog, like a 30 to 45 pound, runt to smallish sized springer, rather than an 85 pound Lab or Chesepeak.

John

If you do get one, shoot kneeling down.
It's a lot more stable.

Tie a piece of fishing line to the trigger guard
if you can, thicker line that doesn't curl up.
It's a lot easier than explaining to the cops where your gun is.

I use a Canadian Type Indian Canoe on rivers,
works well.

Electric motors are the go for short distances.

As Tom said above, duck hunting in small boats in rough weather can be dangerous. As far as stealth goes, layout boats, similar to the outlawed sink boxes, have to be at the top of the pile. If you're hunting small, closed ponds I've seen these rigged with pulley systems, or you can pole out. The more common method relies on a tender boat to pull you out into open water. Again, there's not much freeboard and you've got to have a PFD and someone close by.

Been looking at the Old Town Predator Canoe http://www.oldtowncanoe.com/canoes/huntingfishing/predator_ss150.html for a similar purpose.

The "stealth" is probably more stable on the water and would cope with a moving dog better, but the Old Town can supposedly carry more gear and be fitted with a 5 hp outboard

There are a couple of Old Town distributors popping up in Australia if you look hard enough - there's even one in Queanbeyan

Is that the brand or style?

Style

Very similar to the one in the link at old town
but a bit more raised at the front and back.

Like a fibre glass version of what the Idians used
to use in the westerns.

I'll find a link.

Thanks

How wide is yours compared to the OT Predator and just how bad is the stability if you shoot from the seat rather than your knees?

Let me check.

If you don't have anybody else in the boat you can shoot seated but you sit quite high.

I made an outrigger for the canoe that made it a hell of a lot more stable / less likely to tip over.

I don't think it looks too stable, especially if you were taking a shot off to the sides. There doesn't seem to be much freeboard, and I would think that too much movement would make it quite shakey and prone to tipping. I wouldn't use one myself. Also, it has a capacity of 250 kg.including people, shells, shotgun, motor, dog, dead ducks, fish, ice chest, anchor, etc., which seems to be a lot for such a small craft... that's a plus.

Look for an Alumacraft Ducker. They have not been made for many years but no better marsh and small water duck boat was ever made.

My father-in-law used to build wooden kayaks and that is what I use on a small shallow marsh.
It is 12 foot long, pointed on both ends and is low and wide. Very stable.
I paddle out to a patch of cattails and just slide into them a little bit. Instant blind.
It works well for me.

Here is a youtube video about them.
I dont know if Algoma Hardwoods is still making them or not. They bought the rights to build them from my father-in-law.
