What a BORE !!!
      #263219 - 07/04/15 09:09 PM

What a BORE !!!

Dreaming on the weekend about a Top End buffalo hunt with my 10-bore Westley Richards double rifle, made in 1879.

But I have got to get it shooting damned quickly now, if it is going to get used this year !!!

Nice!
Hope you get it shooting. Load listed on the water table or barrels?

These guns are simple.
Use groove+ diameter ball and 3-1/2 drams FFg Goex powder, add powder until they shoot together, nothing mysterious.

That's just about 100 grains FFg
I'd likely be adding 10-15 grains a load till it made a group.
Don't be bothered if it doesn't print to the same elevation as the sights.

Can you show the front sight please?

It looks like the leaves all lay down, so I'll assume one of them is marked for 50yds.
Use it on a target at 50yds and see how it goes.

Shoot that thing John!

Nice piece of kit Nitro!
For an old rifle that's over the century its still looks damn spritely.
Bloody jealous matey, hope that you get her 'singing' again for a hunt.
Tinker is there a rule of thumb (drams)when it comes to 'bore' guns as to black powder loads?
Cheers

Wow that's a big old fella!! Looks in fantastic condition. It must recoil like being kicked from a horse! But bet you smile each time it goes boom!

Not so much a simple rule.
Some things to consider are overall rifle weight, barrel length and weight, chamber length (careful here, as some get lengthened over the generations), class of action (and breech depth), and of course condition.

The makers would at times (some more than others) engrave the charge prescription on the action, barrels, or buttplate. There was no requirement at the proof house for a service charge prescription on the black powder rifles.

We know what standard weights were from makers' records and such text's as Greener's Gun.

By appearance alone, I'd say start with the lighter end of the 10bore charge spectrum and go from there.
A 10bore rifle could possibly have been built for as big as 10 Dram loads.
I wouldn't start anywhere near 10 Drams though.

Cheers
Tinker

John - Glad to see some pics of it up here at last!

Looks great! I'd love a 10 bore double some day, or a single 8.

John, nice!! It has been my experience that the bore guns can regulate just the reverse of what we expect- increasing the charge makes them shoot apart! I suspect it is because of the recoil effect, but that's just a guess. At least that's how all of mine behave, though obviously each is different. Something to try- I'll be watching to see results!

This is how my .58 reacted to increased powder charges, then, after reaching parallel shooting, crossed again, but reversing the elevation error that had been there to begin with. At the correct load and 10gr. under, the barrels shot same level. Below and above those loads, they crossed and had elevation error. It was strange, but repeatable.
