The Biggest Shotguns of All Time

Punt guns were used by market hunters in the early 20th century. The biggest we could find was a 300-pounder that could kill hundreds of ducks in one shot

Punt guns like this one were used during the market hunting days to kill large rafts of ducks that were then sold to restaurants across the U.S.

John,

Thanks for showing. This is a very interestiong article. I womder how many (if any) watermen lost their lives when the gun broke looseL The article stated this about a gun shot on land: "the entire gun jumped back more than 10 feet because of the amount of black powder it was loaded with."

I remember seeing an old flatboat with a gimble mounted punt that had been used in South Louisiana. It looked like a gunboat with a long barrel cannon.

Outlawing punt guns made sense in that they were only used by market hunters. However, that certainly didn't completely stop market hunting in the US.

I was just reminded of my limited exposure (two night-time ambushes) to the 76mm Canister round fired from the M113-mounted Scorpion turret.
Biggest shotgun shells I have ever experienced!

The results would make a market-hunter weep, though...

Interesting article. I didn't know the punt skidded back after firing. Funny photos always show the gunner aiming his face inches behind the gun. Ah no!
