What is your sacred place in Africa ?
      #2349 - 10/04/03 12:03 AM

This last couple of days while I was in Ellisras I took a trip up our mountain again in the Waterberg ! I don’t know how many of you have sacred special places but this two photos depicts my sacred place in Africa.

The first time I ever stood there that was long ago in 1991 I saw two majestic kudu bulls run up the valley and for the whole time they were running I followed them with my eyes from the other side it was such a majestic sight that touched me and changed my life forever. Since then a lot has happened on that spot I shot my first bushbuck ram not 30 yards from the spot where I took the picture to my back. I must have spent countless hours just sitting there and waiting for game these are all free roaming game and I don’t think, that the game was stopped by any fence for a very large area. I’ve even seen a leopard female pick up a cub and then come back half an hour later for the other not further than 50 yards from me. I was scared but also mesmerized I’ve seen the little klipspringers come closer to investigate me. Sadly there are no more klipspringers around didn’t see any signs of them and I know there was two different family groups on each side of the valley but sadly I suppose they fell prey to dogs of the surrounding area.

Last year still there was two who fed on our green lawn in winter we hope to see them again this year. Anyway what I’m trying to say is that this is two pictures of my sacred spot in Africa does any of you have such spots or memories. I cannot tell you how great I feel when sitting there for a while thinking, communicating with God it juts cleanses my soul !

Here is 3 more pics from the area from the top of the mountain enjoy. Also please bear in mind that the photos are more in color it is not that green!

My place is the the greater part of the Limpopo Valley.I love and adore the Mopani and Baobab Bush.Greatest place in the world to hunt Kudu and the challenge is awesome cause this area is any Kudu back door.Difficult to get them here.

Last year, in Zimbabwe, we walked up the course of a river called the Ramonjie, from it's confluence with the Zambezi.
We walked along the dry riverbed, into the hills , for about miles 15 to 20 miles, where we sat in a small valley, by a spring , and watched a host of Africa's dangerous and beautiful fauna come down to drink and wallow in the early afternoon heat. The place had this mystical look and feel to it, with smoothed out tree stumps, mahogany trees both fallen and some still standing and the area scattered with the flowers from a sausage tree. It was like being in a dream, and remains etched in my memory as one of the best and most memorable spots in Africa (to date).

Mine is at a place called Bahmbata's Krall near Greytown in Zulu Land. One late afternoon my P.H. and I were hunting Bush Buck high on a hillside overlooking a dry river bed. The indigineous flora surrounded us as we basked in the red glow of the late day sun, and there wasn't even a hint of a breeze. Suddenly, off in the distance, a Jackel started calling, then another, then another, until there were at least a dozen of them singing out. This went on for a good 3 or 4 minutes, and then, and suddenly as it started, the concert was over. What a magical time that was!

Here's an old post worth reviving. I'm surprised it didn't have more responses before.

Anyway, for me, it could be anywhere in the Waterberg where we spent so much time, or Natal where my daughter took her first game animals, or the overlook at Victoria Falls, or the sandy beach in Chete, or at Maholoholo at the base of the Drakensberg, or Songimvelo where we could see the stars through the window at night in an otherwise interminal darkness, but without a doubt it's the small draw leading into the valley where I took my Cape Buffalo in 2008.

There may be a million way tie for second place, but there is no question about first.

Joe's Beer House in Windhoek.

Really everywhere. If I ever run away from home I'll probably be found in Maun or in the Tsaris Mountains somewhere.

Edit: With family and friends:

Rorkes Drift. Now very different from when I first went there in 1984.

An old post indeed. Good to see it come back up.

Matapos is a good one.

But for me the Kenyan Highlands are a special place even if hunting there is no longer possible.

Kilimanjaro too.

Ngorongoro Crater as well even if it is too touristy these days.

Serengetti Plains and the Mara.

Sorry, you can't see the curvature of the earth at 19,340'. I'm an airline pilot and former F/A-18 Pilot. I've flown routinely at more than twice that altitude, and you can't see the curvature of the earth.

However, I am sure the top of Kilimanjaro is something to behold!

My "sacred place" in Africa? There are too many for me to be able to single out one, all with different exceptional qualities. I hope to return to at least some of them in the future, while others most likely will not be possible any more due to politics and war.
