My 2 rifles that some would call "go-to rifles' I seldom use anymore. They are a Mauser in 270 Winchester and a Mauser in 375H&H. I don't use them much these days because they are just too easy to make kills with. The 270 is the caliber I started out with when I was 12 and the Mauser I mentioned above is on it's 3rd barrel.
The 375 is one I got at 22 years old and it's on it's 2nd barrel. I shot out the throats using those rifles and I was not shooting fast. I just shot them that much.

I know where those 2 guns shoot and I can shoot them very well.

But I like to really hunt, and so for the last 15 years in most of my hunts I've grabed an iron-sighted rifles of one sort or another, and many times I take only a revolver.

Sure, I can't make all the kills I would with one of the two Mausers above, but I get to hunt a lot longer.

if the season is going to close in 2 days or so, I still have it in mind to "stop playing fair" and grab the 270 or the 375, but so far I have not needed to, since I started using mostly iron-sighted guns.
That's not 100% but probably about 80%. I have made some kills with a scoped 9.3X57 and a scoped Ruger #1 in 9.3X74R, but thinking back over the last 10-15 years I think about 80% of my kills have been made using only irons and all of them at under 225 yards. Many under 75 yards.

I go-to the gun that seems like the most fun one to take these days. Not the best "killing tool", but the one I'll have the most fun with.

You have me thinking I need to break out my very first centerfire rifle I ever owned..Enfield .303 British.. Open sighted rifle.. would be great fun to give it a try on elk ..

WE need to create a thread for game taken with open sighted rifles .. Would be great fun to see the posts as hunting season begins soon...

Here here!

..or Hear Hear!

Any of my posts, bar the culling and deer-hunting stuff, would fit.
Don't think I've ever in my life hunted buffalo or boar recreationally with a scoped rifle. Not even once.

The way my eyesight is going though, I won't be saying that for many more years...!

But if I ever get my hands on a .333 or .400 Jeffrey that might change

Four years, it wast the ..458 2", then with age, sore shoulder all the time, I put a .375 bl. on that action and a .375/06IMp bl.
The .458 2" one was my fovarite for 30 years, but since I picked up serial #1830 in a model .70 in .30/06, THAT one is my new favourite, in .375.06IMP.
The .375 should have been my new favourite & actually was for several years, but that old 1936 Model 70 wins this contest, overall.

For mean critters 2 and 4 legged I call on baby.its 7.5" barrel 5.56 colt sp1 AR-15 upper on a Anderson pistol lower with a 90 rd drum. I prefer old school carry handle guns.for large critters it's a pre64 model 70 that was rechambered to300 weatherby with an older Steiner on top

I'd like to say it's my Winchester m/1895 in 8,2x53R but in truth, when in doubt and mostoften otherwise, too, it's the Tikka T3 in .30-06.
Stainless w/ laminate stock, it's the do-it-all of rifles.

I just received a new Shilo sharps in 50cal percussion. I may try my luck at deer with it just because i can. i have way to many rifles to say i have a go to rifle. We have a generous deer season here so it gives me a chance to use several rifles. Daryl I have been working with an English sporting rifle in 65cal. I be leave that equates to a 16 bore. It actually be rifled for slugs.

I have several of those Tikka's you mention.. great utility rifle.. handy, lightweight, accurate and reasonably priced.. hard to beat..

In 30-06, there isn't much you could not hunt with that rifle..

Wow, I was a bit surprised at how difficult it was to narrow it down to just one rifle. So many cartridges for so many "reasons"...

In the end however, it has to be my custom .30-06 built 22 years ago and tailored to shoot the 180 grain Nosler Partition exclusively. It's been everywhere with me and taken all manner of game without fuss or drama.

As Ripp mentioned above a thread for open sighted hunting would be great! I have posted a few pics earlier in the year my Mannlicher 8x60S, which is my go to gun! I try and load as close to the original factory specs thanks to Kuduae!
Check out the thread here: http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=352233&an=0&page=1#Post352233
Most of my rifles is open sighted, and I try and use them for hunting whenever I can! The Mannlicher in 8x60S is just one of those perfect "fit" rifles. I have other MS rifles, but the 8x60S just tick all the boxes....

Hi Ripp
on that hunt I used Hornady Interlock 195gr if I can remember correctly. I want to try some Nosler partitions next time, but can not get them in 8mm currently in my area. I have read nice things about the Norma Oryx also, but they are expensive here!

IF you want I can keep an eye out for 8mm noslers for you.. I am in and out of gun shops all the time..right now here supplies on most things related to hunting are low as hunting seasons are just starting.. plus the ammo shortage..

NOT sure about the logistics of getting it there or if even possible??

Thank you Ripp! I will keep you updated. Everywhere we get the same sad story! Covid 19 is the reason, as well as shipping....
We are a small market compared to the US, so we are last in line!!

Not a classic styled rifle but a modern classic

SAKO Aiii, McMillan stock with edge fill, SAKO peep and factory front added, barrel bobbed to 20 inches. 7 lbs pictured

work and play, grizzly protection at work and hunting in thick bush. Also wears a 1.75-6 while hunting. New acquisition to replace a cheaper old go to rifle similarly set up.

Interesting. Appears a light weight bl. for that .338 Win. magnum. Maybe just the angle and lighting.

If you pushed me, then are times when I can go hunting and expect a variety of game and just happy to be out hunting then I will take one of the following special purposed general purpose guns:

1. Blaser BD14 bockdrilling 308Win, 222 Rem and 20G
2. Blaser BBF97 combination 7x57R and 12G
3. Sauer 3000 Drilling 7x65R and 12G
