I read about this new cartridge, else where.
As always, us powder burners, find a place and use for these new cartridges.

Not sure how correct Ripp's prediction will be, as popular cartridge's, that has been around for almost 100 years, don't disapear without a fight ..........

Well, I believe most realize this is more marketing and, as Ron S. states, there isn't much difference between the rounds he featured except for bragging rights as to whether you have the newest cartridge.

I was joking..

Every time another cartridge comes out in this caliber the story proclaims this is doom the 270 Winchester.. pretty sure that won't happen..

Yep.

The hype is throwing a 170 grain pill with a faster twist barrel. It is the same as necking 7MM/300SAUM and sticking a fast twist barrel on it. Nothing more. Probably will be as successful as the SAUM.

Slightly different, different name - will sell "some" rifles and the the rest of us will continue shooting our .30/06's and .270's.
I am currently getting 2,960fps with a 165gr.in the model 70, of 1936. It shoots sub MOA with that load and a 180gr. at 2,700fps - guess I am THERE, pretty much.

1,980fpe at 300 yards, good enough.

I have a Steyr Pro Hunter in 270 Win. 3200fps with a 140grain pill. No pressure indicators. have reduced it to 3100fps as very slightly better accuracy. If I want a 170 or 180 grain pill I'll go to a 308 or 303.

Most certainly we did. Sales figures and longevity show that. The 270 is closer to a true 7mm than any of the current bullets labeled as 7mm.

Hello,

The 7x57 in a Standard 30-06 lenght action, plus their original C.I.P. chamber design, with 20 mm distance from the chamber mouth to the rifling start. So, it can be loaded, at least, at the same cartridge OAL than the .270 Win and 30-06. This is what I use in mine, made in a 1935 Mauser-Werke action and a S.J.G. new military barrel made for the Chilean Mausers. A kind of a 7mm Creedmoor...The base of a Nosler Partition 175 grs at the shoulder-neck case line.
Loaded that way, the REAL diference with the 7x64 (I had one for 6 years) also in a standard 30-06 action lenght at similar presures and 60 cm barrel, is no more than 50 to 75 f/s with 160 to 175 grs bullets.
Long live to the 7mm Mauser!!!

So you Weatherby'd your rifle. That is very long throat so the bullet dose not sit below the neck. It is what I have done to most of my rifles and the difference this makes is quite pronounced. I did not have to have that done to my Steyr Pro Hunter. Seems to come with a long throat.

Hello Rule303,

I didn´t touch my rifle´s chamber! The normal European 7mm Mauser chamber has this dimentions.

The C.I.P. chamber standard for the 7x57 is:

By the way, I do the same thing with my 9,3x62. Because the magazine lenght of my BRNO ZKK is almost 89 mm and because the veeery long Commencement of the rifling in the standard 9,3x62 (28 mm...!!), the cartridges can be loaded much longer than the factory ones without any trouble. And feeds very fine! This increases the volumen of the case notably. And permits the use of many of the bullets loaded with the base at the shoulder-neck junction.

The C.I.P. chamber for the 9,3x62 is:

PT max= maximum average pressure (bar)
PTc max= maximum average pressure, transducer, conformal (bar)
PK= 1,15 Pmax = maximum statistical individual pressure (bar)
PE= 1,25 Pmax = mean proof pressure (bar)
M= location of the pressure take (mm)
EE= minimal proof energy (Joule)

tks - I knew about the 56,600,PSI/57,000PSI & was most curious about these higher numbers listed:

PTc max= maximum average pressure, transducer, conformal (bar) 65,049.4254PSI

and

PK= 1,15 Pmax = maximum statistical individual pressure (bar) 70,705.8971PSI

I figured the 70,700 was a proof pressure.

Hi PatagonHunter,

Thank you and the following posts answers questions I had. The European manufactures must go for long throats and that makes sense as they often loaded long heavy for calibre rounds. I can comfortably drive a 140 grain .270 bullet at 3200fps in my Steyr. That is up there with the 270 Weatherby. I run it at 3100fps as a very slightly more accurate. As you may have gathered I like throats long enough so I can use the full magazine length.

We are now back on track talking 6.8mm rounds

I had a long throated Argentinian 7x57 with long 29" bl., that with the old Norma 205, I got just over 2,700fps with 175gr. bullets.
I used it & that load with 175gr. Hornady SP's for a 3-position match (Vancouver Croatian style) of bench, sitting and standing. Using the battle sights, I placed second to a guy using a scoped .222 Sako. LOL - they didn't invite me to shoot with them again. That was 1976 - I could see and shoot then.

I do not envision a long and prosperous life for this 6.8 Western. Seems a transparent "Hail Mary" effort to sell new rifles to the unwashed unaware.

Little doubt that, Pro or Con, love or hate, the .270 Winchester has been "gettin er done" in classic style for 98 years now.
