6 Bore

What is the true bore diameter of a 6 bore ? I have a 4 bore, but I am thinking of having a 6 bore built. Maybe its a good compromise between a 4 & an 8?

4- bore is 1052. So no, it is not. A 4 uses a 1750 grain ball,a 6 uses a 1167 grain ball.Still enough, for a most determined rabbit charge.

I'm not sure I see the practicality of having a six bore when you already own a four. I know, talking about practicality when these guns are the topic is a bit strange.

Still, I think having these two diameters would be a bit like buying a .458 Lott to go with your .505 Gibbs. If I already owned a four bore and was in the market for a companion piece, I would probably have Steve Zihn make me a double barreled eight, nine, or ten bore.

First of all, I am never practical, a man can't own to many guns.I also want a lighter gun.The gun will be 4-5 pounds lighter.The 4 is also For Sale.Anybody need a left hand percussion, 20 pound rifle?

.577 - the 6 bore would of course shoot a ball, if patched in cloth, of about 6 1/2 bore, depending on depth of grooves. If a smooth bore, .030" or a bit more difference in bore/ball diameter in large bore guns, seems to work well. This allows a thick enough patch, to hold sufficient lube to keep the fouling soft. .035" (heavy) Denim works well in this situation.

500 grains, It's not practical to convert.
The stock would be a "leftie" and so would the lock and breach plug. That means you'd only be able to use the barrel, butt plate and trigger guard, and a few small parts. Most of the gun would have to be replaced, which means building one from the ground up would be as easy, and about the same cost.

I have to disgree to a point. If you consider how the British proofed their guns, a 4 bore is considered anything over ,903 and under 1.026. The 4 would be proofed as a 5/2 for a very large gun. Refer to Greeners "The Gun". Not saying technically you are wrong but from how the British proof house marks them it would be incorrect. The 6 is considered a 4.
